How’d you solve a problem like Morelos?

Before ppl jump to his rescue I’ll start by saying he’s been a fantastic signing. However I hope Cummings can finish because the wastefulness of Morelos is going to cost us points again
5 chances, good chances at that. 2 with the goal gaping & we get 1 goal
He either needs to work on his finishing or get a bit more composure (I understand he’s young). It’s becoming a trend in our matches that he continues to miss multiple very good chances, which you can forgive if the goalie makes a good save like Gordon did, in general though these chances are back post headers etc which after doing so well to get into the position in the first place should be buried.

Ffs I’ll add this here since it seems to have gone over everyone’s heads...
The thread title is a play on words
How to solve a problem like Maria (sound of music)
It was not saying Morelos is a problem. Missed chances can be a problem as we’ve found out a few times this season which is why after beating Aberdeen 3 times & drawing with Celtic we are only ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference but that’s aimed at every player not just him. Of course he will miss chances, I just hope he starts to put the sitters away

He is young and so is Cummings. Both are going to waste chances.
Both will finish some crackers.
It would be great if we could get a shearer to finish all these chances but that's where we are. We just need to keep creating them for our strikers and hope that at least 1 or 2 hit the back of the net.

Maybe you remember a guy called McCoist who was nowhere near as ready at this stage as Alfie is...now remind me how he did? Not being facetious mate, I just think you are a little unfair. By this point the fans were warming up to tell Ally to"get tae f#@#%". I'd rather he was there missing them than not there at all.

Strikers miss chances, sometimes they miss more chances than normal, the much lauded Harry Kane couldn’t kick his own arse for the first month of the season and had a similar spell that lasted even longer last season.

Morelos is young, he’ll continue to improve, he brings so much more to the team than goals, he’s still the top scorer in the league, he’s the least of our worries.

Spot on mate.
Ally couldn’t hit water falling out of a boat when he come up from Sunderland then slew everyone he played against. Freddy will only get better.

The thing is that he came off the part raging at himself because he knows he's missed at least one sitter. He's still very raw, but at least he has the desire to keep improving.

I wish we had more `problems` like him. The hardest part of the game for any striker is creating the space for a chance in the first place, and Morelos does that very well indeed for such a young man, especially in a tough, physical league like the SPL. Oh, and if memory serves me well, Coisty could also be profligate, even when he was banging them in for fun. Morelos is raw and inexperienced, but he`s still the top scorer in the SPL, so no complaints from me.

I'm struggling to see where the 'problem' is.

Yes, it's frustrating when easy chances go begging but he's not the only one.

He's been a fantastic signing and will only get better through hard work and endeavour.

He has seemed to miss a few but has basically had to carry the strike force through the entire season, hopefully Cummings coming in helps him relax and keeps him motivated

Morelos is my favourite player. I like that he was gutted when he came off last night. The crowd clearly appreciated him too.

In the short time he has been here he has got better, his hold up play and interaction with other players is improving all the time!
He’s also the leagues top scorer!
He’s only going to get better, the problem we have is, from recollection, he’s only on a 3 year deal (i could be wrong).
Perhaps that is something the board may want to look at

I understand the OPs concern, especially when we look back at defeats such as the Hamilton game where we were on top, had plenty of chances but still got beat.

Morelos did go through a bad patch back then, as every striker does. Therefore I welcome having another option in Cummings.

We paid £1.7m for a Mexican striker who csnt get near the team, we had Garner who at £2m could not lace Morelos boots - have a wee think about our problem player.

If we can polish off the rawness he is going to be in demand, especially if he gets capped by Columbia, which is just a matter of time - goldmine.

This thread is guff, Morelos is an absolute gem and we should enjoy him while we can. He misses chances, so what?, all strikers do, it takes a certain type who dusts themselves off and go’s back for more.

See All McCoist for another example.

It’s a good time on this place when we’re moaning about a lad who scored and currently leads the way in the countries standings. :D

Quite a change to moaning about Kiernan and Wilson ducking corners, or Halliday standing holding the microphone whilst the opposition run through the centre of our midfield. :D

All strikers miss chances. Have you ever watched cavani he misses about 4 good chances per game and he is a top/world class striker

I'd be more worried if he was the type of striker who lives in and around the 6 yard box but was missing these chances. As it happens he does an awful lot of excellent work for us outside the box and is an absolutely superb outlet for us, who works his absolute socks off for the cause.

I agree that Cummings probably would've buried a couple of the chances Morelos missed, but I'm just glad Alfie still manages to got into these goal scoring positions in the box having spent a fair bit of the match a fair bit outside it.

He'll continue to miss his fair share but let's be honest, he's still going to put a fair few away between now and the rest of the season too.

I'd much rather have him in the side than not, as we're much stronger with him in the team. Still only 21 too, still learning...

If he was scoring a higher percentage of his chances he wouldn't be playing with us in the first place as he would be out of our reach financially. The same goes if Candeias was to deliver every cross in perfectly or several other players on our team.

Its a reflection on where we are right now. We need to find these guys and develop them. As a result we need to show more patience with them.

I don't know if we have a specialist striker coach but maybe this is something we should look at maybe even offer Miller that role at the end of the season. practice makes perfect as they say I'm sure if we had someone experienced working with the strikers it's only going go help the lad. I'm more worried about trying to keep a hold of him right now the more his name is on the scores sheet the more interest there will be.

Like suggesting someone has a drink problem but the problem is they can't drink the pub dry before falling comatose.

Ridiculous thread. They boy is the leagues top scorer requiring fewer minutes playing time per goal than the top scorer from the league leaders (who happens to be their penalty taker.....and they get a few of those).

What problem?

The only problem is fans who think he should score every single chance he gets.

I don't know how many times people have to say it. He's 21 and a bit raw but he has all the attributes to go on and play at a fairly high level. If he was close to being the finished article he wouldn't have cost £1m. He gets in the right positions, he works his socks off, he can hold the ball and bring others into the game. He misses chances but he doesn't stop getting in positions to put the next one away.

A bit of time, some encouragement and nurturing and he's only going to get better. You can tell he isn't used to heading the ball often and especially not heading the ball on the move.

Morelos strengths far outweigh any weaknesses.

Maybe he should have done better with the header last night but if anything he deserves praise for finding himself in positions he does. We've not really had anyone able to do anything like that in years.

Put it this way, if we drop point it's typically more than Morelos to blame. I suspect he's being held to account for not scoring in the last old firm match. Good chance as it was that was a hell of a ball to try and place as it was whipped in from behind him. Not the sitter people would have you believe.

Let's get behind our assets rather than find problems with them.

Won’t be the first striker we’ve had that misses more than he scores. As long as we’re still creating chances.

I hope he was shaking his head coming off last night because he was disappointed with his misses and not because he was coming off.

He misses some great chances, but he's always back looking for the next chance.

It's not just about the goals though.
His physical presence is a huge part of our success going forward, as he is terrific at holding the ball up and bringing others into play.

You saw the difference when he went off.
Cummings doesn't have the same physical presence and can't play the lone striker role.

We won't be changing our formation anytime soon so Alfredo is absolutely crucial to our lineup.

I think he was unlucky with a couple of his misses last night. The keeper got a touch on one which was just enough to put him off when the ball came to him and another was played too far behind him. He did well to get a shot close and if he cared about what posters on here think he probably would have let it roll behind him. His work rate was incredible last night and I thought we were worse when he went off.

Just keep feeding the buffalo.

He's in the positions. Shit strikers don't even manage to find space. The hard bit is all done. Misfiring isn't a talent problem, more mental.

He'll become more and more clinical over time. The issue will be holding onto him.

I see what you're doing OP. Trying to put off potential suitors. I like that.

The thing with Morelos is, that he has all the raw abilities that you look for in a striker. As frustrating as it is at times, at most of his misses, it's hard to take into account his movement & his off the ball intuition that gets him in these positions in the 1st place! He's got that "in the right place at the right time" thing about him and it certainly isn't because he's lucky. It's an instinct that you can't teach.

Finishing on the other hand? Is certainly something you can develop and get better at & I've no doubt that we'll see Morelos get even better - which is mad considering he's the top goal scorer for us and the league in January with 12 in all competitions (which includes a small spell of not finishing - which far too much was made of!) . To put that into perspective, Waghorn was our top scorer in all competitions last year with 16!

Said to my mate last night, he'll be our first ever player to go for £10m plus easily.

Morelos is still learning, the goal he scored last night, was harder, than at least one that he missed, had a good game last night,we won, wtf,no moaning from me.i.m.o.

The big difference is that Morelos sniffs out a lot of chances that most strikers don’t.

If he was scoring them all then he would be playing at a much higher level than ours.

He’s still the top scorer in the league so not doing too badly in front of goal, all things considered.

I do agree that a lot of his missed chances are headers. Is scoring headed goals an art that can be coached or is it just something certain players have a knack for?

He's a great player. Not just for scoring but his strength and link up play. Yes he misses a few chances but his movement in and around the box is second to none. Not even remotely a problem for me.

The age old saying ... you have to be there to miss chances.

He did miss a few tonight and against top opposition that may haunt us - but he’s a talent and for 1m (Real pounds and not Dembele dollars) he is and will be a great signing.

The best thing is it looks like “he gets it” playing for rangers not everyone does.

Yes he does miss some guilt edged chances but he’s the most exciting striker we have had in the past few seasons. He’s a young man, foreign to our country and he’s settled in superbly. I would pay to watch him no bother.
