How good is Tavernier?

People wanted Hodson and Flanagan playing before him and every single week - win or lose - there would be threads on here with folk slagging him saying he's never a Rangers captain and he's a liability etc.

Embarrassing.
Do not remember one fan wanting Hodson over tav, think thats a little bit of revisionism from yon self.

Slatted for being rubbish when he had Rob kiernan and danny wilson next to him and didn't have a proper dm to cover his position when he went forward.

Goal scoring and assist record is incredible for any position, let alone a right back. Just needs to hold a few trophies up.

Really? Hundreds of people on both here and social media were wanting Hodson to play right back. That isn't revisionism in the slightest.

A lot wanted Tav played RW with Hodson behind him.

Mentalists.

He has never been rubbish. He has of course had dips in form and mistakes in him (As have every player that's ever played), but he has been consistently good for us with spells of utter incredible form. His current form is honestly unbelievable.

Always liked Tav, perfect no, defensively at times and sometimes his crossing is also poor but his drive and energy down the right wing is phenomenal, add in always fit and available. Never forget we were miles behind them when he arrived and because he was the captain many on here I felt unfairly picked on him for any mistake and overlooked the positives. He may turn out to be one our best buys ever if we can lift that league trophy this season.

I just had a keek at Tav's Wiki profile and in no way was he Rangers material or anything close to being a captain. All these stats do is cry journeyman:

You then see his stats for Rangers and they are like night and day:

Even that doesn't tell the whole story. Over the past 18 months, under the tutelage of messers Beale and Culshaw and by dint of his own immense efforts, he has become the complete footballer and has grown immensely.

This is how you can go from being a loan player at Shrewsbury to captaining one of the most storied teams in world football on a European stage vs Benfica on Thursday.

It is actually fairytale stuff.

Probably the best right back we’ve had in 30 years.

That good.
Since Gary Stevens?
I’d probably agree.
Only Porrini, a totally different type of full back, would come close but, the way we play, I’d rather have the Tavernier/Stevens type.
For me better than Hutton and Whittaker.

Critics will point to the tally being high because of penalties. But what they don't see is his runs into the box from right back, charging right through the middle. I said earlier as well, he will often be in the centre forwards position getting on the end of crosses.
Penalties still have to be scored.
McCoist and the rest wouldn’t take to kindly to removing penalties from his total.

He’s having a flawless season and really growing into the captain’s role. When he lifts the league trophy he’ll be a Rangers legend and rightly so.

The whole penalties comeback is very poor, to a certain extent scoring a penalty is far more difficult than scoring from play.
The pressure taking a penalty in front of thousands must be frightening.

Unfortunately it's not mate, it did happen.

Probably the same people that wanted Jason Cummings to start instead of Alfredo.

I'll admit my biggest concern was his leadership skills. I felt his head went down too early when we lost a goal. However I believe he is a massively improved player and sets the right example to his teammates.
Somebody mentioned earlier the Gerrard effect and in Tav's case that is bang on the money I think we all knew that he was a player but now our captain believes that himself without arrogance. What a journey he has had as a Ranger, long may to continue.

I think the Hodson stuff started when he played against the filth at Hampden in 2016 and Tav played further forward. Dark times.

Warburton trying him out at centre mid was equally brutal. The kind of move that a particularly clueless FF contributor would suggest.

He knows he needs to win theleague to really prove himself. Obviously we want that so much but I think he'll then move on for a EPL pay off.

I'd hope he hangs around for a crack at the Champions League with us. Could totally understand why he'd want to test himself in the Premier League though.

An injury to Tav is one event that could damage our season. The Falkirk game would have been an ideal opportunity for Patterson to gain some experience of functioning within our system. Sadly - because of the international break - we have been deprived of that chance.

Shifting Ryan Jack or A N Other out to RB just because 'they can play there' isn't good enough. Full-back is a specialist position in our system. We all saw what happened earlier this year when Tav and Borna were unavailable.

he has been excellent for us, he has been playing his best football this season

he deserves to lift silverware

If he wins us this title then he can go anywhere he wants next summer, I won't grudge him that.

He looks like he is enjoying playing for Gerrard though. And the adulation he will receive from the support should we win this will tempt him to stay around.

If he keeps this form up though he will be at the Euros and won't need to move :D

Tav won't be fully appreciated until he's no longer here. In 5/10 years time the people that don't appreciate him the FF's Tav part of the crowd will realise what he brought to the club. Wins the league this year hopefully then he goes down as a contender as a genuine modern day legend of the club and I don't throw legend about like the press do with players. His goals and assists would be very good for a forward winger. For a FB they are exceptional. All for 250k. A bargain 30 years ago in the modern age he's also a contender for best value for money signing we've ever made.

Amazing player and an absolute pleasure to watch really hope he sticks around

There's a good few of us on here who knew how good this guy was after his first season with us. Others then quickly changed their minds after the odd mistake here and there from him, to the point they became quite vitriolic and and scathing towards him.

I often find that certain posters re-write history with Tav, claiming that he cost us a certain game or that he made "hunners" of mistakes.

It was a particularly difficult time trying to defend him and debate with posters who wouldn't see it any other way. Halliday and many other ex pros talk about the fact that what he gives the team in an attacking sense, significantly outweighs any mistake he ever made that cost us a goal and I've never quite understood why some folk don't get that.

I'm just glad he's now showing what a number of us have known for years, that we have the best right back in the country and a player who has easily been our best player consistently for five years now.

Cannot wait to the day he lifts 55.
