Jermain Defoe has taken a
massive 65 per cent pay cut to stretch his stay at Rangers by another year.

The striker has signed a pre-contract deal to join the club permanently from Bournemouth when his current loan expires
in the summer.

MailSport understands the 37-year-old has passed up more lucrative offers from down south – and sucked up close to a £3m hit on his current EPL wage – to get within the Ibrox pay structure.

Defoe has notched 24 goals in 48 games – 16 of them this season – since arriving last January.

And as he put pen to paper, he said: “I’m just delighted, to be honest. When I first signed, as I’ve said many times, it was an easy
decision because I’ve always known about the size of this club, the history and the great players.

“So to get it all sorted
out and secure my future here for another year is really special.

“I’m delighted, my family are happy and to have an opportunity to play for this club is special.”

Steven Gerrardhas been working to get the deal over the line for the past month after securing another season from fellow veterans Allan McGregorand Steven Davis.

The Rangers boss told
the club’s website: “It’s fantastic news.

“It’s something we have been working on over the weeks and it is great to finally get that done and dusted.

“It’s great news for all the supporters and everyone connected with the club for many different reasons.

“Jermain is an incredible professional with the way he goes about his work on and off the pitch – he is a credit to himself and his family.

“And also on the pitch, which is the main thing, he is still contributing heavily.

“He is a major part of
this group, this team and this squad. Hopefully, together we can go and share some success as I think he deserves that.”

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson added: “Jermain is a wonderful professional and character.

“Having his quality
and experience in our squad is not only valuable on the pitch but he is also a huge influence and example to our young players aspiring to represent Rangers in the future.”

I'd say football wages alone defoe has probably been earning between 3 and 4 million the last 10 years. He doesn't seem the type to have pissed/gambled it away so at his age the money is there its trophies he wants. No brainer really from both sides

At this stage of his career I suspect that it’s more about the fit of the club and how he feels. And by God he’s got the Rangers bug. Jermain is already a multi millionaire... so it’s not about the money.

The feel good factor continues and there is nobody in the game with a better reputation as a person than Jermaine Defoe.
Someone who really cares about others outside the game and is evidently a fantastic influence on young players inside it.
It’s funny how the English media absolutely adore him and yet the whankers in Scotland don’t give him the same respect.

His family are settled and to me that's massive you can have all the money you will ever need and be unhappy because your family are miserable, with Rangers he's loved, plays for the biggest team in the country and playing in European competition best young manager around and Ibrox what more can you want

Would I be right in assuming £3m hit at 65% leaves him on wages around the 30-35kpw mark? For a player of his experience and guaranteed goals, worth every penny, may I add.

Folk on here know I was a fan of Defoe so to hear this just shows what he feels about the club and more importantly the money doesn't matter it's playing for the jersey.

Not a chance we are paying that. Assumed wage is 70k, if true we are looking at 24k. Personally I can’t see us paying that much. The wee man is here for 55 & 56.
That's an admirable statement of commitment by the wee man. He's clearly not here for the money. Bring those titles home JD.

Not a single fact to back up Waddell’s claims. He knows nothing and hardly the stuff of genius at 38 years old Defoe earning less in Scotland than in EPL

He’s always had a reputation as one of the nicest guys in football but it is genuinely heartwarming to read that his love of the game exceeds finance. While Alfie is uplifting the impoverished in his hometown. If any other club in the world had these 2 as their star players, the press would be phenomenal.

Incredible from the wee man

Finishing off what in fact is a wonderful career with the mighty Glasgow Rangers.

Defoe is still getting a decent wage at a massive club with a good chance of titles, where he is adored by the players and the fans. Good on him. %^*& the negativity
I'm quite sure the money side of things doesn't go to his head,. Will have a huge part to play on and off the pitch and a lot of players could learn from his example.
