Jimmy Greaves and the ’66 World Cup

Someone once said Jimmy Greaves passed the ball into the goal like he was shutting the door of a Rolls Royce.

As a five year old wean, I remember greetin that this was on the telly. Didnt get to see Batman. Scarred for life, obviously.

To take the thread slightly off tangent, in the excellent BT Sports documentary his wife comes across as an absolute an absolute gem. They divorced at the height of his alcoholism but got back together as a couple then re married a few years ago. What a romantic I am. :)

Replaced by Hurst who claimed the position as his own, it was down to Greaves or Hunt for the final. Although he might not have changed the result, he could have avoided a lifetime of controversy, because he sure as %^*& wouldn't have turned away from the ball when it came off the underside of the bar like Hunt did.

The BT documentary a wee while back on Greavsie was really excellent. A wonderful goal scorer and a great personality.

You can still access the documentary via BT Sport. Contains plenty of footage of him scoring, including at Ibrox in the Cup Winners Cup.

Also features him on the ATV Midlands show where he made his name as a pundit, presenting an award to Jock Wallace who must have been doing well with Leicester that season.

Greaves missing the World Cup Final in 1966 was like Moore or Charlton missing it.

There were four truly world class players in that England team - Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves. Other players were great, like Wilson and Peters, but those four stood out. And they had one shot at immortality, on 30 July 1966.

Jimmy’s pain and grief at missing that one big chance must have been immeasurable.
