John Fleck

There really needs to be a complete independant open investigation into why this is happening so frequently these days
30 or 40 years ago I dion't recall it ever happening though no doubt there would have been the odd occurrence. Now it seems almost weekly
Don't want to be speculating on resasons but there must be some factor linking a lot of these cases

Was reading that 183 athletes or coaches have collapsed on the field since December alone.

There is a couple of giant elephants in the room that need to be addressed.

Would be interesting to see how that compares to years previous. Does seem a hell of alot though

Aye. If anything modern training ‘supplements’ are probably more likely a factor.
Makes me laugh when the “it’s happening so much now it must be covid vaccines” conspiracy theorists come out. Puerta, Foe, Muamba, O’Donnell - there have been several cases that pre-date covid, some by more than a decade.

So irresponsible and mind numbingly stupid to throw this “it must have been the vaccine” crap out there with no tangible proof.

I am not suggesting this for Fleck just just devil's advocate misuse of PEDS and Caffine doping?
They have been using such things since the 70’s or before. Has decreased significantly over time as rules have become stricter and testing more frequent. Caffeine still in use of course but they have been using that for decades.

Been released now. Hopefully they get to the bottom of it and its nothing serious. Get well soon John.

As someone who is an epileptic he will be physically drained for at least a fortnight.
My specialist once told me it can be comparable to running a marathon.....strange since I struggle to get the mail.

Plot a graph with average miles ran in a game vs incidences of players collapsing and I'm sure they will correlate.

It's well known that there has been an increase in the athleticism of an average player in the last decade , teams run more miles on the park pressing the opposition. I would suggest your average player is putting his body under more stress than they would've 10-15y ago.

Glad to hear he appears to be doing ok.

Research in 2018 estimated that about 1 in 260 elite football players have a potentially life threatening heart condition, which is a scary statistic.

The modern game puts significant stress on footballers' health. Not surprised that we're seeing more players affected by immediate issues on the pitch. We need to get better at investigating these things properly as a matter of routine at clubs. Owe a duty of care to their players.

All just my opinion but for me it's a sign that footballers are getting flogged too hard.

I understand they are paid well, but if someone gave you 20 million pounds but said you have to run round the world twice, you would give it great go. But your body would let you down eventually. It's not about effort or desire or whatever.

These guys aren't machines, how many games do we watch a season where both 11s have players that are at 100 percent peak fitness? The majority of games should be like that, but is it really?

The game is being devalued and players are playing well under maximum capacity as they are expected to keep going and going, going again.

I don't feel sorry for them, they know what they sign up for. But playing 10 sometimes 12 months with one, two or three games a week is impacting on the quality of the game. It's travelling in a direction where it doesn't matter how well you are paid, the body and mind can only do so much.

With the advances in Sports Science, every top level club has data on each player from heart rate data right down to how many km they cover in every training session. It is flagged on specialised reports when players are being over worked and need a rest, it's called being in ''The Red Zone''.

I don't buy for a minute that this sudden issue with players collapsing is down to the players being over worked. The data is already there to manage this particular issue.

Is it related to the vaccines? Nobody knows, it certainly warrants investigation as the vaccine is the biggest change that has happened in the last year for anyone in terms of receiving a new medical treatment. It might very well not be anything to do with the vaccines, but it should be investigated rather than the sinister shutting down of any mention of this which currently happens. Censorship is only going to fuel conspiracy theories even further.

Yet with all the data, muscle injury and the like are still as prevalent?

I absolutely get the data is there. But that data is currently not predicting anything in relation to injury and now players collapsing in matches.

Maybe the answer is in the data but it's not being queried correctly, or maybe the answer isn't in the data?

Does seem to be more regularly occurring, however RE Wyke - when I was younger I would occasionally collapse at football.

Actually collapsed doing physio in the Royal Alexandra Hospital once, and woke up to the junior physio or whoever freaking out.

Went the 30 second walk to get some blood tests and other stuff. Think they asked the standard questions, inevitably they concluded it was due to low blood sugar.

That was probably the 3/4th time I’d collapsed whilst running in 10 years.

The game is faster than ever I think that’s the issue, players are having to push themselves to the extremes more than ever, you don’t see the same volume of issues in the lower leagues

I'm not interested in debunking anything as I keep an open mind but so many people seem to be missing the actual easier answer

Covid 19

This virus can affect so many people in so many different ways, just because you are an athlete doesn't mean you recover with no issues, I was personally fucked after it and still feel effects from it and I am what you'd consider fit

My thoughts aswell. But by the time this is openly called out unfortunately it'll be too late for many.
