Kemar Roofe says goodbye

Thing with Roofe is, if he was one of a few who it just didn't work out for, he'd get less stick than he does. He was a decent player when fit. But the flack aimed at him is more of a general feeling of frustration from the fans at the club as a whole due to our shambolic recruitment over the last 4/5 years and he is one of the biggest representatives of that overall failure from the club.

We could have probably carried a few passengers like him if we'd got some of the recruitment right, but we have ended up with more passengers than contributers so we all ended up completely fed up with the likes of Roofe.

Good luck to him whatever he does next.

Great player when fit and firing. Shame about the the injuries. Still, scored some very important goals for us. Will obviously be remembered most for THAT goal against Standard Liege.
Best of luck for the future.

Hopefully we can now retire the phrase "A fit and firing..."

Beset with injuries, which I'm sure were as frustrating for him as they were for us, I thank him for his efforts, and wish him nothing but the best.

Had the ability but not the fitness and that cost us dear unfortunately both financially and on the pitch as we've had to play less talented players and lost leagues etc.

Good luck to him. We move on from him and Jack etc and need a fit squad.

Scored some quite brilliant goals.

It’s one of those moments you just knew…same with Hagi deflection against Braga…it like time slowed down for a few seconds
That’s exactly it-it’s as if time slows down! What a great way to put it. There have been a few moments like that over the years right enough, when you ‘just know’.

Gazza's second v Aberdeen was arguably more important and would definitely make a top 5 but Roofe's given the conditions, level of opposition and distance/technique puts it above I'd say.

Good luck to him... hopefully manages to get a bunch of games somewhere before retiring.
With Roofes goal it wasn’t just the hit, was the fact everybody was screaming just run into the corner ffs, naw roofe decided to beat 3 men and hit a shot that beats the keeper from about a mile :))

The reality is if he wasn't injured all the time, he would have played at a higher level.

We will always remember him for that goal though, only Davie Cooper has scored a better one for Rangers in my opinion.

You have to feel sorry for the guy. What could have been. He must be very frustrated by his injury history.
Aye, millions of pounds in the bank while missing games with some questionable injuries while others were willing to play through them.

Absolutely heartbroken for the guy.

Gazza second v Aberdeen was better. :))
Sorry, and I know these things are all about opinion, I think that had Roofe's goal been scored by any club from a 'big' league, we would have seen it every day of the week.
Look at it again, it's not that he scored from inside his own half, he beat 3 players to get to that position from the middle of our half!
I was there when Coop scored 'that goal' (and poor Sandy Jardine's cracker was sidelined!) I was there when Gazza scored and sadly as I am old when Stein officially stopped the 10.
But Roofe's goal was just unbelievable.

Defoe's 1st time over the shoulder daisy cutter onto corner is far far better
I’d agree with that TBH…it’s the best finish I’ve seen scored at Ibrox…there’s undoubtedly been bigger goals at more important times and more important games, but that finish was phenomenal.

Good player, just never fit and ultimately it’s a case of what might have been.

Did play his part in some big moments though.

He scored the goal of the century thus far. On his day he was a class act but there were not too many of those days, sadly.

PS, there's no truth in the scurilous rumours doing the rounds that he injured his typing fingers writing his goodbye post.

Great player shame about his injuries, for me not just for Rangers but one of if not tge best goal I've ever seen

Gazza's first goal v dolly was more important and just as skillful as his second.

It settled the nerves after falling behind.

It's all about opinions.

But Roofe's is off the scale.

An absolutely wild opinion.

I wasn’t Morelos’ biggest fan, but Roofe wasn’t in the same stratosphere as Alfie.
Followed by someone saying Defoe is the best we’ve had when he’s not even the best English striker we’ve had (and I love Defoe). The good weather always encourages people to get on the gear :))

Thanks for your time and goals Kemar. And as for that special one, Wow! If I ever see another Rangers player score a better goal than that I'll probably be a hundred years old.

A real shame that injuries have curtailed his career. As has been said if he was a a 40 game a season player year in/out then he most probably would never have been with us.

I think that he'll probably go on to play for a few years yet in a league that plays 1 game a week.

He was a bit of a weird guy but I don't think he was lacking bottle as is suggested.

His ropey calf (which was a chronic issue we knew about when we signed him) was obliterated by the end of his spell here. It's not really an injury you can take injections for or play through.

I dare say it had a cumulative effect on the rest of his body which is why he was so brittle, the arm and shoulder injury against Aberdeen being a case in point.

Most offices have those guys that are off sick a lot that they become unreliable as a resource. Sometimes it's absolutely legitimate and other times it's chancers but at the end of the day it's a resource down and people get frustrated. That was Roofe.

He's been here four years and I honestly don't believe his career with us ever got started. We've had so many players like that too.

A good player, no ill will at all towards him, but happy we can use the money more wisely. Good luck, Kemar!

If he could have been fit for the europa league final l feel it could have been a game changer. Even in the 5 mins he was on he caused them problems.

An instinctive predatory striker. What a goal scorer. I wish someone could have fixed his susceptibility to injury.

On another note, I’m shocked that so many Rangers fans on this thread have yet to see Mark Hateley’s opener v Leeds at Elland Road.

It's an interesting point.

Hateley is the most fearsome centre forward I've seen. For that couple of years before McCoist's leg break as a forward pairing, they really were a sight to behold. Then Hateley carried us, in what seemed at the time, single handedly, to 6iar.

Defoe was an altogether different type of striker (poacher) and absolute class. We obviously only got to witness the tail end of his career.

Outside Roofe's goal in Belgium, Defoe's goal against Livi, when he rolls the ball into the net from Tav's? long ball ranks as one of the best instinctive goals I've ever seen from a Rangers forward and that is no slight on Hateley or McCoist or anyone else.

Can’t see past Hateley, at one point you’d have been hard pressed to find a better centre forward in Britain, he had everything you’d want a centre forward to have the way the game was played back then. The volley at Elland Road was tremendous.

Back in the day, I'd have a few in the District with my uncle and his pal Sammy, who saw the Millar and Brand partnership. (I used to call them Statler and Waldorf) out of slapping distance I may add.

Sammy was adamant, circa late 92 that McCoist and Hateley were better than the M&B partnership.

I don't think there's any higher praise.

As a pure, clinical finisher he’s as good a player as we’ve had in years. A real shame for both the club and the player how things have panned out with his injuries.

Good point about his career at Rangers never really taking off. Even in the first season he was never really to be relied upon to play, but we had Morelos and were a mile ahead in the league so it wasn’t really noticed.

He made 36 appearances in all comps in each of his first two seasons with us. When you consider that we had good European runs in each of those and take substitutions into account then he was probably under 50% minutes played in those two ‘good’ seasons.

Good luck to him, be some laugh when he finds a new club and manages to go through an entire season with no injuries.
