I’d never be a referee for all the money in the world but I’ll be behind them 100 per cent if they strike, says Kris Boyd
To be getting death threats from clowns with half a brain is simply not acceptable

IT IS little wonder referees are close to breaking point and threatening revolt after a constant stream of abuse this season

They are on the verge of going on strike— and you can hardly blame them.

If they did opt to go down the route of industrial action then I would be right behind them.

One hundred per cent I would back a strike.

To be getting death threats from clowns with half a brain is simply not acceptable. Talk of conspiracy theories from people who should know better doesn’t help either.

To think officials would go out to try and influence the result of any game is preposterous.

Officials from Luxembourg took charge of games in 2010 following a referee strike
What the critics need to realise is that refs are only human. They are also only part-time so mistakes are inevitable when a match is being played at 100 miles per hour.

If you had a part-time player training twice a week and then asked to play in a full-time league then he would find it almost impossible.

You need to find a way to give refs a better chance of being more successful and going full-time is an option that should be considered.

However, I doubt that would stop the mindless idiots giving them pelters, or clubs calling their integrity into question. As someone who gets stick at virtually every ground in the country, I know what being abused feels like.

Yet even I wouldn’t do the ref’s job for all the money in the world.

Not a chance.

What is our game coming to when an official needs a police escort before taking charge of Ayr v Falkirk?

That is why I would stand shoulder to shoulder with them if they stood up for themselves by taking industrial action. How would those sending death threats and making abusive phone calls feel if people came into their work and had a go at them?

Celtic hit out at John Beaton in a statement
How would they like it if people were standing outside waiting to hurl obscenities at them when they finished their shift? If they had their phone number and personal details released and were then bombarded with hate-filled abuse, would they like that?

Before frothing at the mouth, why don’t they consider their own performance and see how many mistakes they have made over the past couple of days.

Don’t be so quick to jump on somebody making a decision during a game of football.

It all happens so quickly. Refs don’t have the benefit of watching hundreds of replays slowed down.

There is not a human being, for me, who doesn’t make mistakes, so it is time for supporters to get a grip.

It is also time for clubs to take more responsibility when putting out statements slating refs.

Putting their name to it would be a start.

Celtic’s criticism of John Beaton was embarrassing. This was classic diversionary tactics. Rangers also have previous this season when they went to town on Willie Collum.

Rangers also hit out at Willie Collum in a statement
Interestingly Steven Gerrard was quick to distance himself from that particular club statement.

As the fallout from the last Old Firm game continues, I look forward to reading the Celtic statement slagging off the manager’s team selection and the players’ performances.

Far too many clubs, managers and players use referees as a get-out following a bad result.

They do it knowing fine well the fans will jump all over it and social media will go into meltdown. The bottom line is that Rangers battered Celtic for the first time in 13 league meetings.
Deal with it.

I’m sure in those previous 12 games then there were plenty of incidents missed by the officials. I don’t recall any statements about them.

The bottom line is managers will make mistakes in terms of picking players and signing players.

Players will also make errors throughout the course of a game with their decision-making?

Do chief executives and boards make mistakes? Yes. So why is all the focus centred around the referee when results don’t go your way?

In the wake of Rangers’ 1-0 win on December 29 most of the attention has centred around three Alfredo Morelos incidents.

You could say he was a lucky boy to escape punishment.

The same could be said for Callum McGregor when he wasn’t penalised for a blatant handball in the penalty area which prevented a certain goal.

There was also a flying Scott Brown arm that appeared to catch Scott Arfield and a host of other incidents that didn’t warrant a mention in the Celtic statement.

Like the rest of us, officials in this country are far from perfect, but any errors they make are honest and genuine. The abuse has to stop or else it is only a matter of time before we are flying in officials from across Europe to take charge of Premiership matches.

That is a road Scottish football doesn’t want to go down. Again.

Decent report. Still, I’ll get Rangers in somewhere.

Didn’t his manager get fined for critical comments as well though?

Cards on the table, I thought our statement on the Candeias incident was crass and far too personal against Colum.

Something needed said, however it was a bit of a shambolic way to go about it.

We're brought into it because we handled that wrongly.

Possibly, but I meant he omits mentioning his own team who’ve be in the press more than us for their after match comments.

To be fair, I don’t mind KB and not having a dig at him, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Gut reaction I agreed with your feeling of it being crass.

The statement clearly tried to get other teams who had issues with Collum onside but no one ever had our back so immediately that was foolish. It also made it look like we meant issues with him and us. When I think we were trying to say he is getting too many big incidents wrong (like the one he got running up to the last old firm game where they couldn’t be seen to over turn it because it would send a bad signal the same day/week he was appointed for the big game).

Ultimately it didn’t look great when a simple ‘we are utterly baffled by the last minute decision and welcome the chance to discuss this with the sfa’ would have suffficed. As has since been leaked Collum agreed with us that he made a mistake but the sfa then lied to cover for him. Which to be honest strengthens us if we hadn’t been so personal in the opening salvo.

Not a lot wrong with that and I agree with the above post regarding our poor handling of the Collum statement. However, Kris omits to have a dig at one key set of protagonists, namely media pundits and specifically Ex player pundits, I can only wonder why.

Let’s be clear, the Celtic statement only followed days later after the match, following “death by” BBC Scotland pundits and Mutton.

We were only personal because they hung him out to dry and made it look like his decision. The SFA put the target on Collum, not us. I just wish it would be reported, especially when the tims cause another strike.

At the end of the day, putting the death threats aside as they have come from fans, the official statement from Rangers was at least as bad as theirs if not worse. It suggested an individual referee had been systematically cheating against us for a long period of time. Collum hasn’t even been the worst with decisions against us over a period of time.

Their fans are obviously scummier than ours and always will be but anyone who thinks that they are causing a strike for releasing their statement and that ours was justified or right is blinkered.

Well Said, On the day of the game nobody but nobody said anything to critizing the officials Inc Brenda,Hartson,Sutton, English etc etc

He obviously has to mention our statement about Collum or the scum will accuse him of being biased. I’d like to think he knows the HUGE difference between our statement and theirs.

We were only personal because they hung him out to dry and made it look like his decision. The SFA put the target on Collum, not us. I just wish it would be reported, especially when the tims cause another strike.
Our statement was poor mate.We named him at least twice in it and more or less accused him of cheating (underlying issues)

I agree with just about everything in that article, although I'm sure some in here will find a word or sentence to get all angry about.
For me the only thing missing is naming Hartson and Sutton for their part in it all.

I actually think Boyd would rip Sutton to shreds if they went head to head over Scottish football opinions.

Well said Kris Boyd he is bang on the nail here and for what it's worth I agree with him regarding our statement about Colum,it was far too personal.

I agree , I thought the statement went a bit too far and should have focused on the incident rather than the individual, it also has now allowed the media to spin it in such a way that it deflects from how absurd the Celtic statement was.

Officiating in the country has been abysmal for years.

The question is WHY the lid has been blown off the issue after ONE result?

Answers on a postcard to..............

Regarding the Candeias incident, if we had just focused on that as an individual injustice (which we all know was never going to go anywhere other than the SFA spam filter) rather than bringing up historical and personal injustice them we would have distanced ourselves from this whole storm. We missed a trick with this one as it would have been pure theatre to watch form afar :)

It seems the club can’t win. Endless demands to speak out, attack our enemies, show some bottle, name and shame etc etc etc

When they do name Collum who DOES have previous with us there are experts on here telling them it was a mistake.

Candias’s ordering off was a disgrace froma ref who has witnessed inflammatory celebrations by Celtic players and did nothing. He gave a penalty one yard outside the box at Falkirk. There are other examples.

This wasn’t a debate about whether the statement was right or wrong, merely highlighting the hipocrisy of fans accusing them of causing a strike due to their statement when ours was at least as bad.

Our character assassination of Collum was actually worse than theirs on Beaton.

Thompson is an example of a referee who has given worse decisions against us but we never said anything.

Personally I didn’t like the tone of the statement and would rather a general statement about the wrong decisions as a whole rather than highlighting one ref.

Agreed

I don’t disagree with anything in the article, we were wrong to come out the way we did however I understand the reasoning behind it. What’s happened in recent weeks with that lot however just reeks of them doing what they do best and playing the victim.

Boyd rightly points out 2 incidents in the same match that went in their favour but I can’t remember a single other person in the media making reference to them.

I hope the refs do strike and in doing so highlight the reasons why but I’m going to bet if they do they get made out to be the villains ether piece

Collum got it horribly wrong and if reports are correct he admitted his error. Current rules dictate that his decision could not be overturned. A simple apology would have sufficed but the SFA made a chunt of it as usual. I do feel that our statement in someway has been vindicated.

Bheast fc don't have a leg to stand on. They were totally out of order and have fuelled the trial by TV pundit/newpaper reporters still running against our player. The fact that Morelos was flagged by the Compliance whilst other incidents were conveniently ignored is a disgrace and that particular job should be binned.

Another who has shat it from saying it was the filth support who threatened Beaton.
