League 1 & 2 clubs blast ‘damaging misinformation’ as they ask SPFL to extend season by two weeks

LOWER league clubs have confirmed they want a reduced 22-game season - and two-week extension.
SunSport told yesterday how League One and League Two outfits had accepted that finishing a 27-game season was a non-starter due to the lack of fixture dates.
SPFL chiefs have a decision to make over the Lower League format

Clubs have looked at various options since Nicola Sturgeon gave the green light to return and have decided that a revised 22-game format - with a four-match split after 18 fixtures - is the best way forward.
And a joint statement issued by all 20 lower league teams today, they have asked the SPFL for a two-week extension, while also hitting out at the "damaging misinformation" which has been spread surrounding the season finale.
A joint statement read: “With the enforced suspension of our leagues finally over, our focus is now on returning to play.
"There has been a lot of damaging speculation and misinformation about our two leagues and our direction of travel. This statement should make our position clear.
“Today, as a united group of 20 clubs, we have advised the SPFL that we plan to resume our season on 20th March, with an immediate return to training this week while complying with the testing regime.
"With regret, we accept that a 27 game season is no longer open to us due to the timing of the return.
“We have spoken twice to Neil Doncaster in the last two days to discuss the options open to us in terms of the fixture schedule.
"The SPFL’s preference is for us to complete an 18 game season and we understand why - it is the easiest option, with potentially less pressure on the fixture schedule and no need to make any changes to the length of the season.
“However, the consensus amongst the 20 clubs is that a 22 league season is the preference, with a split in each league after 18 games, followed by 4 further games.
"It allows a competitive end to the season that our fans are keen to see and we want to participate in. We received money to test and to allow us to keep playing and that is what we want to do, not just run down the clock to the end of the season.
“The issue of player welfare is always a priority for us. But even with the demands of a tightened schedule, players have made it clear that they want to play.
"Covid may also play its part but with the same testing regime and protocols as the Championship and Premiership, we are in no worse a position than they are.

“To complete a 22 game season will mean extending the season to fulfil all fixtures, including those that may have to be rescheduled.
"But this is possible without impacting on anyone other than club 21 (9th in the Championship) who may have to wait a maximum of 2 more weeks for the play offs.
“With all that has happened to Leagues 1 & 2 and noting that it is in the gift of the SPFL Board to grant a short extension, as almost 50% of the SPFL, we want them to see them work, with an increased sense of urgency, to find a way to make that happen.
“As a group with common purpose, we worked together to produce the original proposal that got us back playing.

"It’s disappointing the time it has taken to act on it, but we have been greatly encouraged by the support and solidarity from other clubs and their supporters at the perceived unfairness of the situation we find ourselves through no fault of our own.
“We are now calling on the SPFL to do everything in their power to work with us to overcome the perceived obstacles of a 22 game season, which all have solutions, and hope they will respond accordingly.
"We must achieve a workable solution for clubs, players and fans by having a season of an appropriate length, even if that means the SPFL making some concessions to accommodate that in what has been another challenging season for clubs.”

SPFL issue response after League One and Two clubs join forces in call for 22-game season

THE SPFL say they will "consider" a request made by all 20 League One and League Two sides to introduce a 22-game season this term after lower league clubs released a joint statement on Thursday morning.
The clubs in the two leagues in the bottom half of Scottish football's professional set-up were given the green light to return to training earlier this week after all fixtures were postponed in response to the Covid pandemic in January.
Any hope of completing a 27-game season - as was originally proposed at the beginning of the campaign - was snuffed out due to the months-long suspension of all football below the Championship.

In a letter signed by all 20 League One and Two teams (almost 50 percent of the SPFL), clubs revealed a proposition from the SPFL that would see each side play every other team in their division home and away - creating an 18-game season.

But clubs have urged the governing body to reconsider, asking instead for a 'split' to be introduced after 18 games, with each side then playing the other four teams in their section once more - giving a 22-game season.
In a statement in response to the lower league clubs' plea, the SPFL said that everyone is "keen to see the smoothest possible end" to the 2020/21 campaign.
The statement read: “We warmly welcomed the announcement by Scottish Government that League 1 and 2 clubs are permitted to return to play and share the desire of all 20 clubs, their players and fans for a return to league fixtures as soon as possible.

“Since the suspension was announced in January, we have been working with League 1 and 2 clubs on the various fixturing options. Everyone is keen to see the smoothest possible end to league season in all four divisions of the SPFL and, as part of that process, the SPFL Board will now consider the request from League 1 and League 2 clubs to extend the dates of the league season and the play-offs.”

And should we reach the final then we might have another final, arguably a more important one, 4 days later.

Does anyone in Scottish football really care about Scottish football?

Not surprising to hear Doncaster has been obstructive in this process. He needs voted out and sacked.

I think they will all be gone at the end of the season. Clubs have had too much to deal with on a day-to-day basis to deal with these clowns during the current season. They will have plenty of time in the coming months to hopefully remove the incompetents and look to the future, because there are some really opportunities to grow the game in Scotland to what it should be.

It does look like it's all coming crashing down. Let's hope so.

Makes you wonder what plans the clowns at spfl/sfa have been making all this time that the leagues have been suspended.
Probably to busy doing celtic cover up work.

Most likely as you'd then have a Championship side waiting an extra month & a half for the play off.
Plus contract situations if some finish end of May.

Fair enough, I forgot the play-off. But that could even be moved to July and played in the pre-season.

I appreciate there are obstacles but it's the 'can't do' spirit that I find frustrating. Except when it's a Scottish Cup that can be played the following season...

Methinks it's time for another rousing speech from Cardinal Liewell. He'll need to be quick, though, he's buggering off into the Twilight home for the confused and bewildered soon.

I actually love all this
Certainly a lot easier to laugh at the SPFL’s ineptitude with the title in your back pocket. We‘d all have taken the league only, if offered, at the start of the season, so its two free hits at trophies as far as I’m concerned.

To the lower league Clubs that backed our call for change - we understand your frustration at the inept, incompetent & corrupt SPFL & SFA.

To the lower league Clubs who chose to back the status quo - serves you right

Time for Rangers to mount another challenge on the leadership we should surely now get the support for a motion of no confidence?

I was told Cowdenbeath are being difficult because they would prefer to keep their staff on Furlough. What a state to get into where they would rather a prolonged suspension rather than play the season out.

The SPFL will consider the request.

Surely the SPFL work for the clubs. And all 20 club have unanimously decided this is what they want. Should have took the chance to rid our game of these cunts when we gave them the chance.

So the clown that insists the SPFL is the clubs is considering whether to allow the clubs to do what they want.

Whatever happened to Doncasters, "the clubs are the league" mantra? Or is that only the case when its useful to him, no need to answer.
