Liverpool place some non-playing staff on furlough

You are getting really upset about people calling these Clubs out, have you a mega-company that is taking advantage of these payouts?

I'm not even remotely upset.

Football clubs are using a valid Government approved scheme to help them through a very difficult time.

Other businesses are doing exactly the same thing.

I really don't see what it is people like you are getting upset about, or why you think football clubs should be any different from any other type of business.

If it is inappropriate HMRC simply won't make payments to them, or they will make the payment and once they have done their further checks will recover the money. In extreme case they may even look to prosecute people who abuse the system.

If HMRC think they are entitled to make the claim, then that's fine.

Some of these clubs will be splashing out £50+ million on players in a few months time yet can't pay their non-playing staff in full right now.

Any big club doing this are an utter embarrassment. It’s morally wrong and completely unacceptable. Glad the government are equally disgusted.

This scheme is there to help people and businesses who need it, not ultra rich football clubs.

It's not that they can't pay them, it's that they don't need them and won't for some time so why pay them otherwise?

Sickening. I left my previous employer on the 28th of February, started with my new employer on the 2nd of March.
My current employer isn't allowed to furlough me because you have to be on the books by the 28th of February, so theyve now made me redundant. Ive been punished for moving jobs at the wrong time, even though I was a tax payer on the dates in question. I also don't qualify for universal credits. Now billionaire football club owners are using it when they clearly don't need to.
Ask your old employer if they can put you back on their payroll? It would be unusual but this can be done. May depend on how your relationship was with the previous?

You said the system was being abused, I was wondering how you thought it was being abused.
It may not be being legally abused, but it's certainly being morally abused. These clubs will happily spend tens of millions on transfers when the window opens and tens of million more on players wages, yet they're happy to dip the pockets of ordinary taxpayers to pay their non-playing staff. This should be a hand up for businesses which find the current situation a genuine challenge, not a hand out to all and sundry.

Pfa saying they shouldn’t cut wages 30 percent as it will drive down tax returns. Firstly their employers are fucking taking money direct from the government and secondly how much tax do these fuckers pay anyway. I bet they avoid millions still. Couldn’t give a toss if the whole lot goes to the wall. Reprehensible.

Nah they've said no, and I actually don't blame them. The whole system is flawed and needs looked at again.

I recall a few years back there was a pay slip for a player that made its way on to the Internet and the tax deducted was eye watering
I'm sure players use tax avoidance but I'm sure they are paying large amounts in tax as well

HMRC, really, you mean that bastion of truth and integrity.
No offence mate but you really haven’t a clue about real life, probably your pay grade is that high your fecking common sense has went out the windiae.

None taken, I just think that HMRC who are administering the system will make checks, either before or after the payments are made, and if anyone is ruled to have abused the system they will do something about it.

If you disagree no problem.

Each week an employer must return what's called a full payment submission to revenue. This discloses each individual's weekly or monthly payment records, NI, tax etc. Hopefully this will catch a few thieving bastards

This whole saga is really showing players of the prem in a bad light
Millionaires who play football so out of touch with the working man the very people who made them what they are. Moral integrity is lacking in so many so called stars

Another cash rich club (owned by a billionaire by the way) abusing a scheme to help normal working people get through a difficult time while they could easily pay this themselves.

I hope the government tells every single one of them to do on and force them to pay the staff themselves.

If you invoke Furlough...you should not be allowed to spend a single penny in this next transfer window.

Why employ staff you don't need irrespective of how much money you have? That is the reality of this as no football means no need for backroom staff such as admin, matchday staff etc. It's not as if they are being subsidized to work which would be wrong. It's not as if this is going to last a couple of weeks.
As there is no football being played, that puts the players in the same situation as any member of the non playing staff. No football no need for players. Furlough them all

The players need to follow a personalised training plan with the data being sent to the club to monitor, which I assume is classed as working.

And suddenly I want to see their season declared null and void too. Absolute disgrace these clubs with the money they gave taking advantage of this scheme.

It's not a good look for clubs from the Premier League, that's Tottenham and Liverpool, last seasons Champions League finalists who combined reported profits of over £100m.

You'd think a 10-20% reductions in player staff could help provide 100% of non playing staff salaries, that would generate some decent PR for a club as well.

I've got no issue with clubs down in League 1/2 putting staff on furlough as they obviously don't have the massive amounts of money available to them.

So much for the Tory hating Liverpool eh? Exact same as the tims, champaign socialists.

Man City's Kyle Walker's spending his money and time at home on escorts while their union reps posture. Have to be the most out of touch people in the world.

Seems from reading comments sections of articles regarding Liverpools decision the their fans are in dismay about it and rightly so.

Club of the people eh?
Wonder if they will rewrite history and come up with a complete load of Charlie hollox in five years time in how they saved the NHS and looked after their employees above and beyond.
That club are unreal at times

If it helps, their fans are as outraged as yourself.

Piers Morgan ripped them and the other EPL clubs that have done this to shreds this morning on GMTV ,saying it's shocking the money these clubs and owners have and are looking to the government to help them out when money could be going to better causes.

Surely to God even some of the players get to know the club staff personally from dealing with and seeing them on a daily basis and would have no Problem in taking a small hit from their vast wages to help them through this. Or am I completely out of touch and all these footballers are selfish money grabbers who think they are above everyone else.

Seen that was hoping the unwashed would get a mention also

Morally wrong in my opinion.

It’s taking advantage of a scheme that was set up really quickly to try and save businesses up and down the country.

Liverpool have the money as their accounts shows, so surely the application can be rejected.

The government scheme will get the piss ripped right out of it by the double wide and others will struggle financially as they don' t have a clue how this works. Then when the "big pay back" is due it will be the same the double wide that will pay f all.
I was looking in the "Are you paying your holiday balance " thread in the lounge . There's people thinking about swanning of on holiday (should they be allowed to fly) while the Government are paying 80% of wages. Britain is morally bankrupt

I think Rooney was spot on with his statement yesterday tbh.

He said he'd be more than happy to contribute towards equipment for the NHS for example. But he said he doesn't think it's right that government ministers are deflecting the anger of the people towards footballers and he's right. Why should footballers be FORCED to give up their salary? Like it or not, it's their money, not anyone else's. By all means be annoyed at the club owners but not the individuals.

About 200 fans (away fans I assume) refused to attend the Liverpool - Atletico game due to COVID-19 fears and asked for a refund (in total around £17.000). Liverpool refused to Atletico refunded them.

More PR disasters.
