Lowland league

I really don't like the names Caledonian Braves or Cumbernauld Colts.

The rules for football team names were set before the introduction of colour television, and you should only be allowed to have a bizarre one if you had it when tellies had to heat up to come on.

If it were me, I'd have all the names that can be used completed before the first series of Pot Black.

What next?

Kilmacolm Nonagons versus Pitroddie Omnibus

I mean, come on tae f*ck. You'll be Caledonian Welfare and Cumbernauld C*nts, and you'll f*cking like it.
The American influence. I don’t mind Civil Service Strollers and Ferranti Thistle (as was).

Had the Scottish game done the same as the Welsh one, where they allowed teams to sell their soul by changing their name to Red Star Max Boyce or something mental like that, we could've ended up with Edinburgh's Civil Service Strollers doing a deal with the child molestor Tam Paton, who could've introduced both his business interests into the club.

He could've had the name of his potato company on the shirt, and the team could've changed their name to the Bay City Strollers.

[Waap-Waap-Waaaaaaa...]

The big result is in.

PORT GLASGOW JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB 4-1 East Kilbride Thistle

Yabba-dabba-f*cking-doo!

They'll be dancing on the Robert Streets tonight.

And chip Greenock off the country and push it into the Clyde.

It’s a still a closed shop , clubs like Pollok,Talbot ,Clydebank need snookers to get promoted , even then they will move the goalposts
I don’t agree with how the Lowland League goes about their business with promotion/relegation but to say those clubs need snookers is wide of the mark. All 3 have had the pre-requisite licensing since moving into the WOSFL yet none of them have managed to make the Promotion Play-off by winning the league itself.

Not a Lowland League tie, but Lowland League East Kilbride 3 - SPFL League 1 Cove Rangers 2 in the Challenge Cup.

A really good game and result for EK, progressing against the SPFL side. 100mph in the first half with EK going 1-0 up after 2mins versus Paul Hartley’s team. Could have been 2-0 after 7mins but for the Cove keeper pulling off a bit of early heroics. 1-1 at half time but EK were the side with all the possession. Cove took the game to EK in the second half and eventually went 1-2 up with less than 10 mins to go. EK applied the pressure though to quickly equalise and then scored another at the death to avoid penalties and run out 3-2 winners.

Really, really enjoyed that and shows EK are worthy of SPFL status if they can eventually overcome the really tricky playoff format.

Not surprised to hear EK won today.

From posts on other threads, there doesn’t appear to be much desire (from fans at least) to gain promotion to the LL. Happy to win the WOS Prem without the license.

I liked the old Gretna better, with the owner being glorified for killing himself by legal means, and articles about Davie Irons and Rowan Alexander in the paper all the time, but you couldn't be arsed reading them, so you didn't know which one, if any, was a total c*nt, or a good guy.

Remember they got scudded 5-1 at Motherwell in a Battle of Britain European tie against their fellow countrymen, whether they f*cking like it or not.

Aren't the East Kilbride proprietors built from the exact same lumps of diseased shite with bits of broken glass in as the Cove manager?

And on that note, the rancid bit of UK that we didn't want got scudded 2-0.

A welcome break from the Lowland League this weekend (for some). No B teams in the competition.

Had a look at the Lowland league table-18 teams-Albion Rovers,Berwick Rangers,Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire are all in the bottom 6. Just shows that these teams were kept in the SPFL too long and a full pyramid system with B teams is the way to go as Rangers suggested.

B teams should only be involved if they can then further gain promotion onto the Lower leagues up to the championship they’ll never agree to that cause it works in just about every country so there no way the SFA will agree to something that will enhance the Scottish game.

Cumbernauld Colts poor start to the season continues. Think they lost an own goal late on to make it 2-0 and kill it.

An opportunity to use the cup to get back on track missed. East Stirlingshire another that struggled to get past a team several divisions below them.

Back to league action next week then it’s Scottish Cup First round.

The league system in Scotland needs an overhaul.
Premiership: 12 Teams, 2 up/2 down
Championship: 16 Teams, 2 up (1 via playoff)/3 down
League 1: 18 Teams, 3 up (1via playoffs)/3 down
League 2: 18 teams 3 up (1via playoff)/4 down

The Lowland and Highland “premier” Leagues need to be two 16 team leagues with a league below them as well.

I’d allow the B Teams of Rangers, Tehem, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee United to get as high as the Championship.

The Scottish game needs bloody investment, without that investment, turkeys and Christmas come to mind. Stadium infrastructure investment, investment in training complexes and investment in getting the best kids into the game. All of this will only feed into the National Team as well. At the moment, Scotland is a viscous circle of decline in football terms. This needs to be stopped and a virtuous cycle brought in.

It’s a pipe dream. Nothing will ever bloody happen.

You’re probably right, nothing will ever bloody happen.

I’d like to see bigger leagues and more movement between them so ambitious, well run clubs are rewarded.

Unfortunately, getting agreement on the way forward is a difficult process. There was a lot of sense in the recent SFA report into youth football but getting anything implemented is always the problem.

Good result for Gretna but then Tranent are just a complete shambles of a club. Swear they have a new manager/committee every other week
Keeps Gretna out of trouble for the moment. I’m surprised to hear that about Tranent. Learning a bit more about the other LL teams every week.

Anyone know why Gretna have improved all of a sudden?

Last 2 seasons they have been getting scudded by everyone and from what looked like it they only survived in LL due to luck of other sides not being promoted

On another note... What happened to Vale of Leithen? 3 relegations in a row with barely a point scored

Just curious having kept an interest in all the pyramid levels

Post #127 might shed some light on Gretna’s improvement. Seems the manager didn’t hold back.

Probably the thought of playing in the South of Scotland league focused the players to do better.

Don’t know anything about Vale.

Lowland League preview

Hearts B vs Broomhill

Hearts B’s good start has faltered with two losses, two draws and a win in their last five matches. Liam Fox’s full-timers have relied on the experience of goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald (yes, that one) whose form of late has been in question. They will be keen to get back to winning ways when they welcome the Park’s Motor Group Lowland League’s bottom club to Ainslie Park on Friday evening.

For Broomhill’s part, they are looking for better. While the results haven’t been there for Zander Diamond’s charges, he has felt that their performances have improved and their new signings have begun to bed in together. That being said, it’s very easy to find yourself left behind in this league, and they will need to start picking up points soon in order to allay any fears of relegation.

Albion Rovers vs East Stirlingshire

Three wins, two draws and three losses isn’t what Albion Rovers fans would have been hoping for going at this point of the season. Sandy Clark’s side have struggled to put games to bed that they should be winning. They find themselves in eleventh place and will be keen to show what they are able to do when one of the league’s struggling sides visit the Reigart Stadium.

East Stirlingshire are that side and despite taking the lead in several matches this season, they find themselves second bottom of the division. Improving their defensive record will be top of the agenda for Pat Scullion and his team, while he will be looking to his strong attacking lineup to keep the goals coming.

Broxburn Athletic vs Cowdenbeath

Broxburn have found the going a little tougher in the last few weeks of the Park’s Motor Group Lowland League, but they’ve still been one of the most exciting sides so far. They find themselves in fifth, level on points with Tranent and only two points behind their rivals Linlithgow Rose.

Cowdenbeath’s start to the season couldn’t be described as ‘pulling up any trees’. They’re without a win in their last four matches and find themselves in fifteenth. Improvements will be required if they’re to push themselves back up the table.

Celtic B vs Berwick Rangers

Celtic B currently sit second, a position they once sat in beneath their visitors on Saturday. Berwick Rangers dropped to ninth with four losses in a row. There’s more than enough talent in the side to turn that run of form around and they started that process with a morale-boosting comeback victory against East Stirlingshire on 7th September.

Civil Service Strollers vs Linlithgow Rose

Strollers welcome Linlithgow Rose to Christie Gillies Park on Saturday with the hope of a good result, and specifically the hope of ensuring that their goal difference doesn’t suffer another hit. Their defensive record needs work and it’ll be a tough fixture against the joint third top scorers in the league.

Linlithgow Rose have won their last four games and are finally coming into the form that their supporters had hoped to see before the season began. They currently lie in fourth but are only three points off the top of the table. Could they rocket up the table this weekend?

Cumbernauld Colts vs University of Stirling

The person who predicts this one right is more than likely some kind of sage. Some kind of druid whose prophetic knowledge of the most unknowable things either makes them dangerous or makes them worthy of worship.

Suffice it to say that these are two sides whose form and performances have been very hard to pin down this season. This could easily be a high-scoring thriller… or it could be a nil-nil draw. We’ll just have to wait and see.

East Kilbride vs Caledonian Braves

This one was a shoo-in for the Neutral’s Pick this week, and for good reason. This top of the table clash has the potential to go down in the annals of Lowland League history as one of the all time great games (it might also be rubbish, I know, don’t @ me).

Caledonian Braves sit atop the league with a two point advantage over East Kilbride. Ultimately this one is going to come down to the for and against column. East Kilbride have been mighty going forward this season, netting 35 goals to Braves’ 19, but Braves have only conceded 4 while East Kilbride have let in 9 so far.

The sides could cancel each other out, but either way there’s a fascinating match in prospect at K Park.

Gala Fairydean Rovers vs Bo’ness United

No wins in the league so far for Gala Fairydean Rovers, which will upset them after they’ve put in so many stunning performances only to end up with a high-scoring draw. It won’t be an easy prospect this weekend when they come up against a fairly consistent Bo’ness United who have won four of their last five games.

Gala have conceded the most goals in the league so far this season and they’ll know that they need to shore things up if they want to escape the growing relegation battle at the foot of the table. Bo’ness find themselves comfortably in mid-table with room for improvement but also nothing major to complain about from their season so far.

In what way? Can't say I know much about them.
It was set up to bring across young, wealthy french footballers to Scotland who paid handsomely for the privilege. None of them are there anymore.

They have no community backing, no fanbase and a ground that looks like an Asda carpark. Plus a questionable share scheme. See below

Ahh I never knew they used to be Edusport, I'd heard of them.

That was an interesting watch.

If Braves go up I could imagine them having to groundshare with Hamilton.
I go and watch them occasionally.
£8 to get in and you can nip next door to the Carvery for a pint
That’s good value. £2 cheaper than Broxburn but I’m not complaining.

I just find it sad the teams that use to be in the Scottish league and lost their places , are struggling in this league.
