Meet the Scottish teenagers trying to break through at Bayern Munich

I have to say I do cringe at our reporting on stuff.

Whilst swooning over Mbappe playing on a pitch, they are more interested in talking about the beer festival at the start, they still aren’t able to speak fluent German and they were both seriously injured.

Maybe I’m just a grumpy old man but none of the above makes me think that they are bold, chirpy or gallus and have a fantastic attitude.

What an angle you’re coming from.

16 year old lads move to Germany on their own, Covid hits and they’re utterly isolated and stranded.

And your reaction is to say they should be fluent in German.

Anyone would “swoon” over Mbappe, especially a teenager. And yeah, if you’ve been unable to socialise for over a year, have just turned 18, you might chat about the world’s largest beer festival being on your doorstep for a minute or two.

You’re right, you are a grump. :D

Yeah, you are a grumpy old man.

My days.

I just find it strange that you’re playing for a club like Bayern, with its own superstars, yet you’re swooning over Mbappe?
Also, yes, if you effectively had a 2 year gap and you wanted a professional career with a German team, you would learn German.
Again, it’s their choice, but it goes against the impeccable professional character that the article claims they have.

I’m going to be honest, I don’t watch much football outside of Rangers anymore. I can’t go for all the lights, fireworks and disco tracks. I couldn’t even tell you who plays for Bayern other than Neuer - but I know who Mbappe is (obviously).

It’s the XBox generation. They eat it all up. Mbappe is King. Most young British footballers don’t even leave the country, never mind become fluent in another language. Will give them props for the move.

Morelos gets credit for going to Finland. He still doesn’t speak English ha, and he will have been exposed to it a lot more growing up - compared to these kids with German.

Fluent German in 2 years? So your expecting something that takes German Kids years to learn. Some people do have a feel for Languages and some can pick up it up very easily, Einstein was doing university level Physics very young but 2 years for ordinary people is not easy to become fluent in a language. Especially that covid would stop them mingling with germans on the street.

How can you only name one Bayern player? Do you live in a cave?

Thing is Germans will speak English or at least have fair understanding of it

UK in general is the worst for foreign languages other countries teach 3 or 4 we never seen to push our kids to learn more but it's v partly because it's not needed

When we do try abroad they laugh and switch straight to English 70% of the time

Sorry mate that is totally wrong. The amount of Germans that speak English is not that high. I will give you the Dutch and Scandanavian countries they mostly can but with Germans it is few and far between. Some can but won't.

I mentioned them on here a year or so back, and one poster was a bit like “hold on”.... then said he actually knows Barry’s dad, a bluenose allegedly.

For that reason I hope he has a cracking career.

Morrison has been playing well for their 23s recently, hopefully they both break through and turn into good players.

Celtic can have their own taste or the Gilmour situation.
Yep family are all bears .

it was myself.

Barry's dad (Barry Snr) was a year below me at high school, we played in the same team.

100% a bluenose, we had no youth set up at the time that's why his son went to Celtic.

Sent a box of strips a while back for the local team.
Not True

Of course we had a youth system at the time, he and a few others chose Celtic for whatever reason.

Barry Hepburn is a 2004, same age as

Jack McConnell, Leon King, Harley Ewan, Kelsey Ewan, Leyton Dunlop, Darren McInally
Mackenzie Strachan, Robbie Ure all chose Rangers when he chose Celtic and are the core of our current u18's.

Our other 2004's joined a wee bit later.

Liam Morrison was at Rangers and Celtic paid a small development fee for him.

I have lived in Bavaria for almost 20 years and although my German is pretty decent these days i know where the lads are coming from. To speak German using the correct grammer is difficult particulary at first . The local dialect is also a factor , what they will be learning at school is as different as what Oxford English is to Glaswegian :) and if your not impressed by October fest at 19 then there is probably something wrong with you . hope the boys do well

I have been in Germany for 8 years and my German is crap. It is because I no longer work and my wife and children are Dutch. most of my neighbours are Dutch. I do speak fluent Dutch but I doubt I will ever master German, I am just too old. If you think of all the diferent ways just to say "the" shows how hard it is.
