MLS Thread

FYI for those who like a punt on the MLS. I made quite a bit backing under 0.5 goals in the first half for the first couple of weeks of the EPL.

Both MLS games so far have finished 0-0 at half time. Due to the normally high amount of goals in the league under 0.5 first half goals is normally over 2/1 which means you only need 1 out of 3 to win for profit.

I don't fancy it as much for this league as the defending is terrible but with the lack of friendlies teams take a while to get going so it will be worthwhile for the first gameweek at least.
I’m usually a BTTS or over 3.5 goal in these games but as you said the break will have played a part. Might jump on that in the game later.

Usually on Sky Sports bud. Google football on tv today and there is a website that tells you every single game that is on the TV. I think Eurosport cover the odd game as well. If you have an 'alternative' way of watching sport, then the Canadian channel TSN usually has every game on as well.
Cheers, sleeping patterns humped anyway so will try catch the Montreal game later.

I used to work nightshift so these games were an absolute must to get me through the night. That's why I started the thread. Gives the Nightshift Loyal something to talk about and a game to watch. The standard is decent now. Pretty much all of the teams would hammer the dross in Scotland bar us and the paedo club. Some good players there as well and a market I am keen for us to explore.

Yeah it’s definitely expanding and developing, Davies, Dest, Reyna are prime examples of MLS/American youth coming through. Our partnership with OC will hopefully see an influx of good Americans coming here. I’m slightly the opposite of you whilst the same. I live off 4 hours sleep roughly between 3-7 so catch the late games, then in work at 8 at weekends I watch a lot of Aussie football. Standard is honking compared to MLS right enough, where would you say football ranks in comprising to NBA, NFL and baseball ?. Still way behind in popularity ?.

The A League in Oz is awful. I will pretty much watch any game but I draw the line at that. Now that I am back on dayshift/backshift I will need to adjust my sleeping pattern to watch the MLS. I like the league so I am keen to keep watching.

I think players like Giovinco and Dos Santos kind of went against the ‘retirement home’ narrative. Very keen to follow this more now.

MLS is still in 5th place in North America, behind NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL (hockey). What's happened over here is that EPL has a bigger following, but it really hasn't carried over to the national league. Americans demand the best product and football/soccer fans recognize the MLS is a second level league. They're getting decent crowds at games, but the real measure is TV coverage and ratings, which are second level, like the league.

Same with Carlos Vela at LAFC. Boy is a cracking player. They seem to attract a lot of South American players. Newcastle signed that boy Almiron from Atlanta for £20m+. The standard is getting better year by year. The Yanks know how to run and officiate sport properly. Something the cowards in this country could learn from.

I think it’s partly frowned upon because American sports are so commercialised if you get me. Could you imagine the SPL trying to run the roster system the yanks do ?. Doesn’t bear thinking about.

Completely forgot the NHL. That’s a mental sport, same teams seem to play every two days and obviously field different line ups. Very unpredictable betting wise :))

The fact the the league is ran for the benefit for every single member would be a major stumbling block for these corrupt f**ks.

Dont get your hopes too high RE the partnership with OC helping to draw players to us.

While the USL is an ever expanding league with an increasing amount of investment it is still essentially in its infancy. They dont currently have a youth program/academy and while I have no doubt it's in their plans similar to Phoneix rising/Sacramento Republic etc it's still a good few years off as far as i'm aware.

Fair enough mate, are you based over there ?.

Interesting, have you noticed an increase in Rangers tops being worn or marketing over there since the partnership began?.

To be honest I dont go to the games, but know families that do. I have season tickets at LA Galaxy

OC market the partnership pretty extensively on their social media accounts and I believe had a Rangers 'night' planned for one of their games this season with Richard Gough scheduled to attend, perhaps including a meet and greet.

Obviously there's a lot of ex-pats here and a big RSC so perhaps it increases the number of those guys that attend

The concept of increasing sales of our tops considerably here is negligible IMO. OC do have a solid following that grows every year and the partnership might lead to some increased sales within that group but I'd be absolutely amazed if that was anything over 20-30 tops over a year tbh.

Obviously a comprehensive medium/long term strategy is needed but the reality is the vast majority of families here consume what is most widely available, which is the EPL/Champions League on tv

Interesting to hear your perspective bud. Must admit it seems galaxy have fallen away from the most prestigious MLS club. Just from outside looking in it seems NYC and NYRB have perhaps over taken them. Galaxy do make cracking strips though.

Galaxy are no longer even the best team in Los Angeles. LAFC are doing extremely impressive things at every level of the club.

For Galaxy it's the unfortunate, but unsurprising, result of years of rampant mismanagement. Strips are good, mad to think they essentially rebranded and changed their colours around the same time Beckham arrived :))

I’ve taken this at 12/5 for the current game, seems possible.

12/5 under .5 goals in the first half. Decent tip :)

Teams seem to take a while to get back into a rhythm. For the first 2 weeks in the EPL it was up in just over half the games, in the MLS it only needs to be up in a third of games to make profit.

I'll stick to it for the first round of matches and see how it goes for the 2nd round.

Came in again last night :))

Anyone up watching the San Jose game? Won a few quid at the bookies today so put a tenner on San Jose to win for a laugh as I’m up late and bored and they were 2-0 down, just scored an absolute beauty to make it 2-1.

What’s the script with the groups anyway? Anyone care to explain the format of this curious league?

Six groups of 4. Teams play each other once, top two go through, along with the best four 3rd best placed teams. Group games count towards the regular season, playoffs dont.

Not a bad game this, should be a decent 2nd half. But these commentators are doing my nut in. Every goal is a goalazo.

I find this easier to watch without a crowd than EPL since crowds arent that big in MLS anyway

Aye I’m quite enjoying the game. Watching on B365 so no commentary, quite amusing that the entire San Jose team is speaking in Spanish from what I can hear but they’re an “American” team. Makes sense I suppose! Cheers for the explanation.

They do dual broadcasts, English & Spanish, you can only change it if youre paying MLS live though

Entertaining game, but the defending was shocking. Well done on your bet

Had to laugh at the microphone picking the SJ coach "Its his fckin hamstring, get him off!"

Most entertaining game of football I’ve seen in ages. It’s quite raw but it’s nice seeing the players all going for it and trying their best, makes it 10 x better. The mics were picking up some belters haha.

Its a more level playing field, thats why I like it. Everyone thinks its players padding their retirement but theres some good Latin American talent playing there. Youre right that its raw, but 1/3 of the players earn less than £1500 a week

I'm not familiar with the MLS league model. Is it the same as NFL where they eventually have a superbowl after each conference or just two separate leagues?

Essentially the same. The Americans just can’t get away from their playoff idea. Last year, LAFC were the best team by a country mile over the course of the season. Had a poor game in the playoffs, and that was it, out they go.

It’s such a shit way to do things. They could scrap the playoffs and just do a system of everyone playing everyone and alternate the seasons as to who is home and who is away.

They’re aiming for 32 teams, so a round robin tournament would work far better than the current setup. Round it off to 32 games by doing what the Argies do with an additional derby match.

5 goals in the first half of the Toronto v Montreal game. Alejandro Pozeulo has assisted on all 5 goals they have scored in this tournament, the 2nd tonight was an absolute beauty.

Played a great game. Squeaky bum time when they took him off up by two goals. Especially after the penalty. Got the result though

Been watching quite a bit of the MLS matches on free sport lately . Been some good matches. Wish I could say the same watching the games from Scotland , been absolutely woeful .

MLS standard pisses all over Scottish football, us and the Paedo Club aside. I would take any MLS side to beat any of the tin pot clubs in this country. At the very least these teams actually try and play football.

Red Bulls have the lead after a review. Did the whole of the ball cross the line? I wasn't sure it did.

Just realised it was Ronnie dolalay that was manager of city. Wouldn't have bet them had I known that. Haha
