Netflix Pelé Documentary

Pele was the star of the show in the '70 WC but the best game was the Germany v Italy semi final 4-3 in extra time. Becanbaur playing with a sling on his injured arm/shoulder.

See that's just nonsense.

World Cups only involved 16 teams back then.

So that's what, 6 games? Three group stage, quarters, semis, final.

Are you telling me that due to 18 games of an entire career - that makes you the best player of all time?

In fact, not even that...

1958 - Pele played 4 games
1962 - Pele played 2 games
1970 - Pele played 6 games

So 12 games makes you the best. Ok.
Exactly. I never understand why people persist with this absolute nonsense about the World Cup.

Nothing wrong with saying he’s the best of his generation, but to say he’s the best of all time IMO is wrong. The standard of the game when he played is miles off what we see today.
Great Players would be great in any era. Baxter for example would be even better playing on the surfaces of today's game as would Pele, Best, etc

What shouldn’t be forgotten is the difference of his time. Teams back then were not full of superstars, they were shared through all the teams in their own leagues. This made the teams more equal and harder to score against. Nowadays the superstars are all playing for the top 12 teams in Europe, the means there is a huge gulf now between teams. This makes it much easier for a Messi or Ronaldo to score a barrowload of goals surrounded by superstars teeing him up against weaker opposition. It was much harder to score in Peles day

Some of the players he'd played against were prob on 60 cigarettes a day and half pished. So he'd prob struggle against the modern athletic player.

Exactly look at Robertson for Liverpool vs Robertson for Scotland

Yet people say the Brazil teams he was part of are some of the best of all time...
