Northern Ireland 1 England 0 2005

What a night. I was on a high for days after the game. I remember saying to my mate before the match I would love to see us score a goal. I never for a moment thought we would beat them!

Second only to the 3-2 game in my book, but unreal.

Nigel Worthington restored our pride and MON carried it on.

Days you could could only dream of.

Worthington was a dud mate as I recall. If Lawrie hadn’t fucked off to Fulham I think there’s every chance we’d have been at Euro 2008.

Apologies. Meant Nigel carried on from Lawrie's very good work.

Had the unenviable task of replacing poor Sammi McElroy.

The change in fortunes under Sanchez was incredible what was it hours and hours without a goal approaching some kind of record.

I think McIlroy was a touch unlikely as quite a few good young players started coming through when Sanchez took over, likes of Davis, Evans, Brunt etc.

Late 90s early 2000s grim times but that game seemed to change everything.

Went over for this with my mate who was an England Fan to keep him company. Let down for tickets so watched it in The Workies on the Shore Road. Feck me did Healy not score. Pub went ballistic and my mate had to endure a lot lot of stick. The Gaffer of the pub said to him have a drink on the house. Said mate quick as a flash said Double Vodka and Coke. Gaffer replied you should've said Double Double.

Next day took him up the Shankill he was getting interviewed for The Telegraph some old woman came out the butchers interrupted and said to him "I never thought I would live to see the day when we beat Mother England" then departing interrupted again saying enjoy your wee holiday in Gods Country.

I agree.

I thought Sammy was unlucky.

I read Keith Gillespie's autobiography and he said as much.

The infamous goal drought was a horrific period for the national side.

Amazing to think how far we've came since then.

I was in Malia out my face . Watched the Scotland Game and this on double screens with the NI game. A few of us had cash on Ni and Scotland to win.

what a night

I scared the #¥$& out of my family with my yells and mad celebrations when Healy scored against England at Windsor Park in 2005 (I was watching it on TV while they were all in another room).

I had waited all of my life up to then for Northern Ireland to beat England at Windsor Park. It hadn't happened since 1927. In fact it was difficult to even get a home goal against them from the 60's to 2005. Northern Ireland actually had a better record against England at Wembley.

Apparently my yells and mad celebrations were, according to my family, only equalled twice. Lovenkrands last minute goal to beat the mhanks 3 v 2 in the 2002 Cup Final and more recently Novo's winning penalty against Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup SF 2008 to take us to the final in Manchester.

You're right mate. Holding midfield/midfield sweeper. Just remember him seemingly never getting over the half way line.
Also easy for a number ten to mark him or a forward midfield player. He was played there to spray passes not to be David Batty.A decision that was a/easy to work out and stop and B/ made to get Beckham in the team even though his position was taken.
Sometimes Your best team doesn't contain the best players on paper

I remember watching it and whilst wanting us to win I can say hand on heart I wasn't distraught losing to NI.If anyone was going to beat us id rather it be them.
I had a spell around this time of turning England over and watching NI anyway.Prefered the passion showed by the 'wee country'
Southgate has given me a bit of believe back in England by picking Youngsters and lads from teams like Burnley.still love watching NI when I can though

You're right. It seemed to me to be a case of the player telling the manager where he was playing, rather than the manager telling the player. And for as good as N.I. were that night, England were garbage.
Did Beckham ever get to play there for England again?

I agree. I worked at OT in the 90's. Beckham was phenomenal on the right side of midfield. And he so often was for England too. He was taking the p1ss playing holding midfield for England though. Gotta blame Sven for letting it happen.

Whatever happened to lawrie Sanchez? He is dressed like Boyce from only fools on the sideline

Left for Fulham with NI sitting top of the qualifying group for euro 2008 and that was as good as it got for him.

Signed half the NI team then got sacked by Fulham in the relegation zone, faded into obscurity after that.

Some memorable moments in his career all the same, giant killing specialist.

Sven would have decided it imo mate.Loved the celebrity circus. The Golden generation were wasted.Scholes left side of midfield at times.same as Gerrard.
Todays football could accomadate Lampard and Gerrard in a midfield Three .Even scholes in a diamond.was all 442 then.to play SG and FL as neither would hold correctly someone like Gareth Barry would have had to play making it 451.
That would mean dropping a forward.Someone like Heskey ,who was actually adored by anyone who played with him.A whole host of players perished internationally through the ridged systems played at the time.
A big one for me,I know He was injury prone but Michael Carrick should have been a constant probably just after that time
