The Scottish League had carried on through the First World War and the football authorites in Scotland hoped that they might be able to continue with at least one division throughout the Second World War, although this had not been possible during 1939-40 and regional Leagues had sprung up.
At the turn of 1940 it had been hoped to resume normal League football for season 1940-41 (and there was also plans to lure a number of players from over the border with the promise of higher wages than they might otherwise earn in England) in view of the minimal war activity in Scotland at that time. The sudden collapse of the Allied front on the European continent caused this plan to be abandoned, and regional football was therefore maintained throughout the hostilities. Rangers therefore kicked off the defence of their Southern League title with a 3-1 at Falkirk on their way to retaining the title. This game also saw the return of of Torry Gillick to the Rangers side. He had previously played for Rangers prior to joining Everton and at the outbreak of the Second World War had returned to Glasgow to race greyhounds next to Ibrox, but he was subsequently persuaded to turn out as a guest for Rangers. He missed the previous season through injury, suffering burns to his left arm and hand that required a skin graft from his leg.
