His abilities with Rangers did not go unnoticed on the international scene, either, for he won his first Scottish cap at the age of 18 years and 269 days. He remained with Rangers until 1972 when he joined Sheffield Wednesday ,later going to play in Hong Kong before returning to Scotland with Airdrie.
1948 - Stranraer 0 Rangers 1 (Thornton) - Scottish Cup 1st Round (6,000)
The Cup pairing between David and Goliath aroused considerable interest in Stranraer, resulting in Stair Park record attendance of 6,000

1973 - Ajax Amsterdam 3 Rangers 2 (A.MacDonald, Young) - European Super Cup 2nd Leg (43,000)
The European Champions' Cup winners completed a 6-3 aggregate win to take the Super Cup, but not before Rangers had given them a few frights along the way, taking the lead after only three minutes through Alex MacDonald. Ajax equalised then allowed Rangers to go ahead once again, Quinton Young the scorer. Ajax equalised a second time from the penalty spot before half-time, and a goal from Johan Cruyff in the second half wrapped the game up.

1970 - Rangers 3 (A.MacDonald 2,Penman) Hibernian 1 - Scottish Cup 3rd Round (73,716)
The kick off was delayed for 7 mins, with 20,000 still outside the ground attempting to get in to a packed Ibrox.
A great Performance on the day, that was marred by the injury to the impressive 17 year old Iain McDonald, who had made such a sparkling debut just one week earlier.
McDonald never really recovered from that Shevlane tackle, and was forced to quit the game at 25.

We met Hibernian in 5 consecutive Scottish Cups 1969-73, with 3 of them going to replays.
We also faced them 7 times in the League Cup between 1970-75

1973 - Ajax Amsterdam 3 Rangers 2 (A.MacDonald, Young) - European Super Cup 2nd Leg (43,000)

I seem to recall this being shown live or am I mistaken ?

1976 this game always remains in my mind due to East Fife having a big baldy guy upfront which was very rare in the days of guys with long hair and sideburns maybe the chap was a big kojak fan

Ha Ha now I had totally forgotten about this guy.
Also on the day...They were at Motherwell and got beat 3-2 after being two up at halftime

Yep Motherwell made it to the semis where they were two up with 15 mins to go.
Rangers coming back to win 3-2 and clinching the treble against Hearts.

1981, I seem to recall Gregor Stevens having an outstanding game. My first trip to Broomfield with both the home and away support belting out the same tunes.

87 - remember queuing for ages in the snow for a ticket for this one from about 6am a couple of weeks before the game and thinking to myself "This had better not finish 0-0"

1970 - with the arrival of Waddell as our manager there was a huge amount of anticipation among our supporters prior to this game. The attendance was massive and the team on the pitch did not disappoint. The one down side was Iain McDonald being crocked by Chris Shevlin of Hibs. The boy (as he was at that time) was shaping up to be a truly great player and the injury that he received that day more or less put the kybosh on his career.

Recall this. Chris Shevlane, thug of a fullback, also played for Jambos and the Country Farriers. Seem to recall young Iain making debut at 16 v Ayr United at Ibrox and we all had high hopes for him.
