1971 - Sporting Lisbon 4 Rangers 3 (Stein 2,Henderson) - European Cup-Winners Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg (60,000)
Rangers preperations for the second leg were hardly ideal - a strike by air traffic controllers in London delayed their arrival in Lisbon until less than 24 hours before the match. Two goals from Colin Stein were to prove especially vital, for they equalled Sporting's away goal tally. Both of them come after Sporting had taken the lead and with barely five minutes left the task seemed accomplshed. Then a late goal from Sporting put them 3-2 ahead and took the game into extra time.Willie Henderson levelled again on the night and put Rangers ahead on aggregate, only for Sporting to score a fourth goal. There was no further scoring and with the final whistle Rangers should have been through, but unbelievably,Dutch referee Laurens Van Ravens ordered a penalty shoot-out - directly against the tournament rules. In a hostile and intimadating atmosphere with the Portuguese fans spilling out from the vast terracings and standing on the touch-line Rangers proceed to miss the first four penalties with Dave Smith missing twice after a retake was ordered.
In the stand however, the UEFA delegate Andres Ramirez, had a better understanding of the rules. He attempted to go pitch side to stop the penalties but by then Damas had already saved the first one,and perhaps wisely decided not to intervene until it had concluded.Alereted by Scots journalist John McKenzie of the Scottish Daily Express,Willie Waddell made certain that Ramirez knew that he was aware of the regulations.A top level meeting between representatives of both clubs and the match officials confirmed that Rangers were through, despite bitter and heated Sporting protests, both on the night and the days that followed.
1973 - Dunfermline Athletic 2 Rangers 2 (Jackson,O'Hara) - Scottish League Division One (20,000)
1979 - Rangers 2 (Urquhart 2) Partick Thistle 1 - Scottish Premier Division (18,400)
1982 - 1FC Cologne 5 Rangers 0 - UEFA Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg (61,000)
Rangers were four goals down after just 20 minutes and effectively out of the competition, finally going down 5-0 on the night and 6-2 on aggregate, however, for many the talking point was a disgracful foul on Jim Bett by German goalkeeper Harold Schmacher, who launched himself at Bett and caught him on the chest.Schmacher remained on the pitch-Rangers went out of Europe.
1984 - Rangers 0 Dundee 0 - Scottish Premier Division (14,588)
1990 - Rangers 4 (Hateley 2,Walters,Steven) Hibernian 0 - Scottish Premier Division (35,925)
1993 - Hearts 2 Rangers 2 (Hateley 2) - Scottish Premier Division (18,370)
1999 - Bayern Munich 1 Rangers 0 - European Champions' League Group F (54,000)
This result meant that Rangers would take no further part in this season's Champions League but they left the competition with no little honour and a lingering sense of injustice. They hit the woodwork three times, made the vast majority of chances and generally ran the game against the Germans. Rangers settled spectacularly well, their attack marshalled by Michael Mols. After 19 minutes his exceptional skills with his left foot allowed him to slip three defenders on the right only for his cut back to be wastefully swished over the bar by Giovanni van Bronkhorst. Five minutes later van Bronkhorst returned the compliment with a cross that ended with the Dutchman's header striking the post with the goalkeeper Oliver Kahn comprehensively beaten. But all those signs of encouragement counted for little when, in the 27th minute, Mols was forced out of the match after a freak accident. Kahn had to run well out of his area to stop Rod Wallace from running clear. He then needed to complete the rescue by sliding into a tackle for a throw-in which left the Dutchman on the ground, immediately shouting for the trainers. Jonatan Johansson replaced him. That mixture of mis-chances and injury broke Rangers to the extent that Bayern took the lead in the 32nd minute when Mehmet Scholl broke clear and appeared to dive over the body of Stefan Klos for the penalty to be awarded and subsequently converted by Thomas Strunz.

20 years since Michael Mols got his injury.

I'm getting old!

1999

So unlucky that night in front of a travelling support of around 16000 IIRC. Lost a lot of respect for Lothar Matthaus after this game with his ridiculous play acting to try and get players sent off. Obviously couldn't handle a young Barry Ferguson ripping the absolute pish out of him during the game. Ferguson looked like he would go on to be one of the finest midfielders in Europe at that point.
