Although the 1954-54 season was to see Rangers finish up empty handed as far as major trophies were concerned, there were still a number of exceptional performances to saviour. The six goal win over Kilmarnock was one of the best of a campaign that saw them maintain a title challenge until the New Year.

1971 : other than the Willie Johnston hat trick, my main memory of this game was the St. Johnstone keeper, John Donaldson, completely losing the plot. I don’t know if there had been a bit of “banter” with unidentified Rangers players but he was responsible for at least one of the penalties and was lucky to stay on in an era where there was no automatic sending off for keepers guilty of giving away a penalty. I thought we had three penalties that day too but can’t remember if Donaldson saved one.

From memory, we did have 3 penalties, Donaldson saving one with Johnston netting the rebound
