1879 - Rangers 1 (Opp. OG) Parkgrove 1 - Friendly
1884 - Rangers 0 Third Lanark RV 0 - Scottish Cup 2nd Round Replay (7,000)
Third Lanark's protest to the Scottish Football Association following the two clubs' first meeting (Third Lanark had protested that Rangers had included a player who was not a member of the club and who was also a professional) created considerable ill-feeling between the sides for the replay. As such, there were a number of running feuds throughout the game, one of which exploded into a brawl. Rangers were also sailing close to the wind again, for their line-up also included Archie Steel of Bolton Wanderers, who was not a member of the club and obviously a professional. The cup rules in force at that time allowed both clubs to progress into the third round as two matches had failed to seperate them and when the draw was made,Rangers found themselves facing Third Lanark.

1961 - Rangers 3 (Wilson 2,Caldow Pen) St.Johnstone 2 AET - League Cup Semi-Final (Played at Celtic Park) (41,000)
Not until the 13th minute of extra-time when Davie Wilson scored the decisive goal, was the tension lifed from the Rangers team, which they had suffered from throughout most of the match. St.Johnstone opened the scoring in the 31st minute, then a minute before half-time, fired into a 2-0 lead. Rangers began the second have in determined fashion and within a minute scored. Scott crossed from the wing,Millar headed down and Wilson prodded the ball into the net off the far post. The equalising goal came in the 78th minute when Scott was pulled down inside the penalty box and Caldow made no mistake with the penalty
1969 - Rangers 1 (Johnston) Hibernian 3 - Scottish League Division One (54,000)
1972 - Rangers 1 (Parlane) St.Johnstone 1 - League Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg (15,000)
1975 - Ayr United 3 Rangers 0 - Scottish Premier Division (20,000)
Despite going on to win the Premier title at the end of the season, Rangers crashed to their only ever defeat in the competition by Ayr United in this encounter at Somerset Park
1978 - St.Mirren 0 Rangers 0 - League Cup 3rd Round 2nd Leg (24,000)
1980 - Rangers 3 (McAdam 2,Jeffries OG) Hearts 1 - Scottish Premier Division (22,443)
1986 - Rangers 3 (McPherson,Fleck,Bell) Hibernian 0 - Scottish Premier Division (38,196)

1961 - That particular game was a replay, as the first match at the same venue had ended in a 0-0 draw.

1969 - David White played Brian Heron (who was a winger) at left back that day and he got a roasting from Peter Marinello. Marinello's performance was enough to convince Arsenal to buy him soon after. It was a downward spiral for David White after that game.

1972 - We had been going through a very rough patch in that season. St Johnstone scored first and Parlane equalised in the second half with a good header. We gave them a tanking at Perth in the second leg,

1986 - I remember Dougie Bell playing really well for us that day but it must have been one of his last games for the first team at Ibrox.

1975- A real shocker to lose by such a margin to a side inspired by Ally McLeod

Back in the 70's when Ally McLeod was their manager, Somerset Park was always a very hard shift for us. Argentina aside, Ally McLeod was a genuinely good manager.

We haven't played on this date since 1986, 31 years ago. That in itself seems extraordinary.

It's the wife's birthday,I pulled a few strings.

Ha! Ha! nice one. The amount of time football has lost me any bonus points I might have built up with the Mrs. is countless. Seems 11th October is a safe football-free date to have anything imortant on.

I have a love/hate relationship with this daily thread. Love looking back and reminiscing at the games. Hate how it highlights my advancing years.
