Tom Vallance, who had left Rangers in February 1882 for India, had returned to the club less than a year later, but was too ill to resume his playing career and instead took a role on the committee. He subsequently rose to become club president, something of a steadying influence on a club in some turmoil. He resigned from that position because of events surrounding this match; Dumbarton had asked that he officiate the friendly as umpire, but his own Rangers players had objected on the grounds that he was too honest for his own good.
