1959 - Rangers 5 (Millar,Scott,Matthew,Baird 2 1Pen) RSC Anderlecht 2 - European Champions' Cup 1st Round 1st Leg (80,000)
Three years earlier Anderlecht had met Manchester United in the European Champions' Cup and lost the away leg 10-0; when they found themselves two behind after only three minutes at Ibrox there must have been thoughts running through the Belgian's mind that they could be in line for a similar defeat. Thus Anderlecht undertook something of a damage limitation exercise; limiting Rangers' threat by damaging as many of their players as they could. Rangers were awarded a succession of free-kicks for fouls committed all over the pitch, including two penalties (only one of which was converted) and should have won by considerably more at the end of the match. They went three ahead shortly after half-time,eased up sufficiently to allow Anderlecht to pull two goals back and then restored their three goal advantage to take into the second leg
1961 - Rangers 2 (Christie,Baxter) Celtic 2 - Scottish League Division One (70,000)
Two people were killed in a crush on the stairway adjacent to passageway 13 (colloquially known as Stairway 13) the exit closest to the Copland Road subway station
1964 - Rangers 2 (Millar,Forrest) Dunfermline Athletic 2 - League Cup Quarter-Final 2nd Leg (30,000)
1967 - Rangers 1 (Persson) Celtic 0 - Scottish League Division One (90,000)
In 47 minutes Ronnie McKinnon began the move which led to the only goal of the game. He lobbed the ball to Persson, who had wandered into the inside-right position. In a devastating run of some 30 yards he beat Gemmell on the inside, swerved past Murdoch and Clark and then again side-stepped Gemmell who had chased back to cover the route to goal. Even then a goal seemed impossible, as the angle was acute and the range about 18 yards, but Persson, showing admirable control and coolness, suddenly wheeled round and cracked an unstoppable left-foot shot past Simpson

1987 - Dynamo Kiev 1 Rangers 0 - European Cup 1st Round 1st Leg (100,000)
Undaunted by a crowd of 100,000 in Kiev, Rangers gave as good a defensive performance as they had previously, restricting the Russians to only one clear cut chance;from the penalty spot after Graham Roberts had been penalised. The result certainly gave Rangers confidence for the second leg,but manager Graeme Souness had been worried throughout by the wing play of the Russians,in particular Alexei Mikhailichenko.Something would have to be done to nulify his threat in the second leg

1981- I went on the Nithsdale Loyal, another poor european performance from Rangers and Tommy McLean was sent off

I also travelled on the Nithsdale to that game. Big Jock from Kilmarnock was the star of the show
He was something else Sam, I think that was the first time he travelled on the Nithsdale and was a member from then on. Sadly missed

1972 - I think some reconstruction work was being done at the Piggery.
1978 - The Sheep equalised in injury time. One of the many nails in the coffin that season, culminating in that 4-2 game.!!!!

Was that about the time that their main stand 'caught' fire?

1992 - Away kit worn at home, absolutely loved that strip.

2004 - Listened to that game on the radio and always thought it was a late goal that we conceded.

Yes, that was his first trip with the Nithsdale.
Had the pleasure of his entertainment the following season when travelling to Dortmund and Cologne.

1992- The start of a magnificent unbeaten run in the first Champions League. Only to be denied a place in the final by Bernard Tapie.
Curiously it is absolutey hard-wired in my head that this was also Black Wednesday when the Pound was taken out of the ERM.

I was in 6th Yr at Secondary School and had double free periods on a Wednesday afternoon that year... couldn’t believe my luck and spent the afternoons before the European matches taking a leisurely route to Ibrox via a few pubs!

Rangers third game in five days, and Centre Forward Jim Christie scores his 5th Goal in 5 days, after only 5 mins in his Old Firm debut.
Tues 12th...3-2 v Monaco (European Cup) Christie (2), Scott
Wed 13th...3-1 v East Fife (League Cup) Christie (2), Davis
Sat 16th.....2-2 v Celtic (a) (League) Christie, Baxter'

Ritchie , Shearer, Caldow, Davis, Paterson, Baxter, Scott, McMillan, Christie, Brand, Wilson

The only change in the Line up for the three games was John Greig coming in at Inside Right for Ian McMillan, for the League Cup tie.

1972, why was a league game played at Hampden?

1972 - Early kick off to prevent crowd trouble. Was this the first ?

Was that about the time that their main stand 'caught' fire?

Arrangements for the game had been thrown up in the air when the Press Box in the new Main Stand at Celtic Park was deemed unsafe and an unconnected fire in the Main Stand. Alterations involving the closure of the Main Stand were required. This would have severely restricted capacity at Celtic Park so the game was moved to Hampden and had to be played at 12:00 because Queen's Park also had a home game on the same day. Also Hampden was undergoing repair / maintenance and the East End, the Celtic End was closed.

Thanks, even nowadays that place is still a death trap
