(Williamson,Marshall) Cowdenbeath 3 - League Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg (46,470)
The Scottish Second Division had been created in 1893 and Rangers had never lost at home to a side from this division until this reverse in the first leg of the League Cup
1952 - Third Lanark 0 Rangers 2 (Grierson,Prentice) - League Cup Quarter-Final 2nd Leg (42,000)
1955 - Rangers 8 (Scott 3,B.Simpson 2,Hubbard 2,Prentice) Hamilton Accies 0 - League Cup Quarter-Final 2nd Leg (40,000)
The League Cup quarter-finals were still played over two legs when Hamilton were paired with Rangers, and the Accies gave themselves a chance of upsetting the apple cart when they restricted their more illustrious opponents to a 2-1 score-line at Douglas Park. It proved to be a false sense of optimism as the Lanarkshire club were thumped 8-0 on the day.

Loved Nissie's celebration, im sure he scored against hearts at hampden and done the same. Didnt he go through a spell of coming on up front?

The 3-3 game in 1977 was against St Mirren probably at their high point under Ferguson. They had been taking 5000 away to most central belt fixtures. Point chucked away, but still a fine game in the treble winning season.

1975 was European Cup, first game in the competition in 10 years. was delighted to be there! Way too young to go to Dublin for the return, though

2002 - the game had a KO around 4pm didn’t it? I remember sloping off from work and going to the Cock Tavern in Smithfields(?) - the underground cavernous one that a bunch of Rangers supporters invested in.

Poor show from Rangers that day.

1996 v Hibs memorable for Wilkins’ return and getting a great reception but also for the anticipation when Albertz stepped up to take any free kick.

They played at Motherwell in the Scottish Cup in February
1977 which attracted a crowd of 28,000.

We were neighbours to Alex Ferguson in East Kilbride then and can clearly remember him coming to our house to collect 2 of his boys Darren & Jason (the twins) to take them to the game.

It’s certainly a close run thing. St Mirren have never taken that number away since then ( Hampden excepted ). I went for our game as St Mirren were now Premier League, having just come up. We were also flying after a terrible start- I remember going to Ibrox for a League Cup tie v St Johnstone where the atmosphere was a bit tense, though we won and never look back, and probably hit the top by about the time of an Aberdeen home game around November. Big home St Mirren support that day.

He was not too bad on his day ;)
You might question lower league signings now, but there were so many of them then, Davie, Barcelona’s Archibald started at Clyde, as did Fergie, Bobby Russell from the juniors, Bobby Shearer from Accies, Stuart Munro etc etc

1975 - “Police announcement. Would the owner of the Irish registered car xxxxxx please return to your vehicle as you’ve left the engine running”.
:)

1949 - Rangers 2 (Williamson,Marshall) Cowdenbeath 3 - League Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg (46,470)
The Scottish Second Division had been created in 1893 and Rangers had never lost at home to a side from this division until this reverse in the first leg of the League Cup

In the return leg before a record crowd, Cowdenbeath actually took a 4-2 aggregate lead from the penalty spot, a local mining hero slotting home for the underdogs,
Rangers bombarded their goal, and it took until the 50th minute for Rangers to get on the scoresheet when Sammy Cox who had been moved forward to inside left for this game, scored with a snap shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Here is a report of the latter part of the match from a Cowdenbeath fan
'The ball came to Frank Armstrong at the Rangers end. The crowd and his colleagues urged him to kick it over the stand but Armstrong with the innocence of youth tried once again to go round George Young. This time the Scottish captain wins the ball and advances towards the Cowdenbeath half. There are 13 seconds left to play. Young punts the ball skywards towards the Cowden goal, the crowd falls silent. The ball seems suspended in the air, in time almost, and then Eddie Rutherford of Rangers barges Holland aside and rises to head the ball past the despairing Moodie. It is the equaliser, the referee blows for time, strong men weep. Rangers fans in ecstasy. Cowdenbeath, 13 seconds from glory now face extra-time.'

In the 102 nd minute, Sammy Cox beats two men on the left and crashes home a drive - the winner for Rangers.

Though it is rarely mentioned,
here was a entire generation of Rangers fans spared the trauma and humiliation that a generation later had to endure following Berwick, by virtue of that Eddie Rutherford goal at Cowdenbeath 13 seconds from time.
