Recent changes to the Scottish Cup format had given Junior players the length and breadth of the country the dream of locking horns with top-flight sides. For this game, a group of Juniors got that opportunity when an East of Scotland select picked from that grade, tackled the Rangers at Tynecastle. The Juniors, not surprisingly, were overwhelmed by their senior counterparts and fell to a 7-2 defeat, with James Marshall banging in four of the goals.

Having won the Treble the previous season, and the Double the season before that,
Rangers 64-65 League campaign got off to a dreadful start, as they failed to win any of their first four League encounters, and sat 14th in the table with 2 points.
Despite this, our League Cup form was excellent, and Jim Forrest had already scored 14 Goals in 8 League Cup ties.
