One Journalist Suggests Rangers Have a Case Concerning Referees

Interesting article by Christopher Jack in the Herald examining decisions that have cost Rangers in recent weeks.

Inside Track: Referees won't cost Rangers the title but standards have slipped too far

IF Rangers, as now seems likely, don't go on and claim the Premiership title this season, they will have nobody to blame but themselves.

The fingers will point at Steven Gerrard and his players and it is they who will feel the heat from punters and pundits if Celtic go on and turn a ten-point lead at the top of the table into nine-in-a-row.

The fall-out when Rangers have stumbled this season is fierce. Everything from Gerrard's team selections to his tactics, from his players' mentality to injuries and suspensions is debated.

But the role that refereeing decisions have played cannot be overlooked. It is not an excuse, far from it, but the men in black have cost those in blue over the campaign.

Blaming the officials in the aftermath of a defeat can be an easy cop-out for a boss. As Gerrard said after the game with Livingston, you can be seen to be getting the violins out if you focus on the referee rather than your individual or collective failings.

The Gers boss was clearly upset by the performance of Euan Anderson and his team, who he claimed would be 'disappointed' with their showings at Ibrox.

Gerrard had no complaints with the yellow shown to defender Jon Guthrie for his lunge on Connor Goldson but it looks a red card challenge every time you see it.

It was Anderson that sent off Sam Cosgrove for an almost identical tackle at Parkhead and the Aberdeen striker would then serve a two-game ban in December.

If Anderson believed that Cosgrove had to go, then how on earth did Guthrie only merit a yellow card as he dived in and caught Goldson in the same situation?

The decision to rule out Florian Kamberi's strike was marginal and linesman David Doig can maybe claim the benefit of doubt. But Alfredo Morelos was clearly onside and that goal would have ensured the closing stages weren't nervy for Rangers.

Had Anderson awarded a penalty for Ciaron Brown's handball, the game could have been wrapped up.
The referee was yards from the incident and it becomes more baffling on each viewing how he could decide it wasn't a penalty. His reasoning - that Brown didn't mean it because of the conditions - got a disbelieving snigger in the press room as Gerrard explained it post match.

He could afford to be measured in his assessment after a crucial win, but the standard of refereeing is no laughing matter right now.

Rangers are not the only side to suffer as a result of the ineptitude of our officials but some decisions, of course, are more costly than others.

For example, Lewis Stevenson's wrestling move on Alfredo Morelos didn't impact on the final outcome of the game as Rangers beat Hibernian at Ibrox.

But what was going through Bobby Madden's mind when he chose not to book him?

The same can be said for Rangers' Old Firm win at Parkhead. Celtic's equaliser didn't cost Gerrard's side victory, but it shouldn't have stood after the ball hit Odsonne Edouard's hand.

The less said about Kevin Clancy's performance that day the better. But it would be a surprise if he gets another Old Firm tie any time soon.

Rangers won despite the officials at Parkhead, but couldn't at Hampden as Christopher Jullien won the Betfred Cup final for Celtic.

Rangers were masters of their own downfall, but the goal was clearly offside.

At Pittodrie just days before, John Beaton failed to award a penalty for a foul on Morelos and Rangers went on to let a two-goal lead slip. The ref apologised to Gerrard afterwards, but getting the decision right in the first place would have meant just a little bit more to the Ibrox boss.

As it would have if Beaton had spotted the handball in the build-up to Kilmarnock's equaliser last Wednesday.
Gerrard insisted at Rugby Park that he would be 'clutching at straws' if he used Beaton's performance to mask the problems of his misfiring side. He was right.

Referees ultimately won't cost Rangers the silverware this term but Gerrard is entitled to call out officials when the time is appropriate.

Just like Brian Rice was when Goldson got away with a handball at Accies a fortnight ago, or like Inverness boss John Robertson was as James Keatings was sent off against the Rangers Colts on Sunday.

Having a go at the referee can't become a managerial get-out clause but there are clearly concerns across the country about our officials.

Many keep quiet for fear of financial punishment and match bans, but it is only by talking about the problem that a solution will be found.

Chris Jack gets his info directly from the club.

As much as it's good getting it out there, I'd really prefer we brought the game into disrepute and challenged the issue head on first before we get journalists doing our work for us. If the club have an issue, come out and say it. Take the charges and fight them with public examples.

He's nailed it. However, his windows and self being is probably at risk now!

I’d also like to have seen mention of Morelos’s disallowed goal at Rugby Park. Twice in a matter of days that he and we had perfectly good goals incorrectly chalked off.

We need to try and keep this issue in the public forum. Maybe then referees will pause to think before blowing their whistle against us.

This is on Gerrard I’m afraid, he underestimated how bitter this country is. If you don’t fight your players corner over every absurd decision you will be trampled all over and risk losing respect in the dressing room. Morelos already has a ‘why should I bother’ look about him. No wonder - he scores, it’s disallowed, he gets clattered - no punishment, he as much as raises a finger - he’s booked.

He's being quite reserved to say the decisions won't cost us the title. They might actually. We'd have beaten Aberdeen and had a perfect December. Potentially won the cup final and been a point clear with a game in hand. Killie would have been 3 points, Aberdeen at home would have been against 10 men. Celtic would have felt the pressure of having no more lives left just like we are.

We won't know for sure but my feeling is we have been screwed by referees to the point it's likely to cost us a league title or at very least any sort of sporting chance to win it on the pitch.

I get we haven't been good since the break too but did a scrappy 2-1 away win at the weekend matter as much to them as a 5-0 home stroll? Absolutely

Beaton alone has cost us 5 points. We will see what refereeing decisions cost us this season! They’ve already cost us a league cup!
Cost us 5.
Hamilton a fortnight ago they gave the mentally challengeds 3 points.

In just 3 games, they have been responsible for an 8 point swing.
Right now we sit ten behind with a game in hand.

I'd love someone to explain how referees aren't costing us.

I would agree with this. We should be saying more about it, it’s too consistent to be violin or sour grapes shite. Unfortunately you would not get them and Lennon taking it quietly, that’s how they’re in this position of impunity on the pitch.

Great article. The thing that strikes me after reading it though, is that there are so many other incidents he could have mentioned. The article could have been doubled in length!

Exactly what I thought. Nice to read someone in the press mention the elephant in the room but there are three times as many baffling decisions this year he has left out. Cosgroves free reign to foul and break a game up, twice, has to be near the top of the list. It ruins the spectacle for everyone watching and then we wonder why kids don’t watch our national game.

The Club need to get a legal team up to Hampden to highlight every inconsistency and threaten legal action. There is no other option as it's what that lot did the last time Lennon was in charge and are now reaping the benefits.
There is no doubt that, for whatever reason, The Club are being refereed to a different standard which has been clearly evident for the past 3 seasons. The most likely reason is the pro-Celt!c culture at Hampden with every department now being infiltrated by those indoctrinated of the same ilk.

Chris Jack May seem like he’s calling out the referees, but he’s failing to make the main and most important point - the referees are ‘officiating’ Rangers to different levels than other clubs, especially when they play against us.

Is it cheating, is it favouritism towards our opponents? One thing is a nail on; were losing/ lost points through it, regardless of how we’re playing.

if your going to print a story, don’t be a shite bag and call it out for what it really is and the negative impact it may be having on our players form.

Just seen the linesman was David Doig at the weekend. I know him, he's a definite Celtic supporter. Does the SFA vet these things?
I think it's called the Fast Track Process which allows them to bring in their own kind very quickly.
There is a seriously disproportionate number of their lot among the top level referees.

Whilst I agree with a lot of the content, is it clear that if we were to have received the correct refereeing, we would be at least level on points with Celtic and a League Cup more in our trophy room.

That is also being completely ignorant of the fact that it is not just big decisions that go against us. Little decisions as well as the holding back of yellow cards have a massive impact on our game and make us look a lot worse than we really are.

Very true but a solitary voice will not be heard as much. How can one broadsheet journo see things as they really are, yet the majority of tabloids cant,,,or rather wont.

You also have the tit from Kilmarnock who was wrestling Tavernier, pushing the ball away twice at a corner and then jumping up to strike the ball with his hand from a throw in,all in the space of maybe 60-90secs and fck all,not even spoken to was done.

Yeah we got to"finish
Of course you do know what will happen. When the league is done & dusted miraculously we will get loads of contentious decisions in our favour. Then the press will say what have we got to complain about.

This is when they will roll out the"these things even themselves out over a season", patronising statement.
When the DEED is done!

He’s spot on. Our inability to kill teams off ultimately will cost us but there is no doubt we get held to a completely different standard.
But we should have had a penalty and Morelos scored a perfectly good goal. game should have been out of sight if it wasn’t for the officials, very lucky we had shagger in goals and the dykes one hit the post and not the bck of the net.

The club should be asking for explanations of the decisions from the head of refereeing

and be seeking demotions

Remember the old saying "these things even out over a season"? Well in Scotland they don't. It's plainly obvious the officials not only have it in for Rangers and treat us differently to the rest, but they clearly favour the scum and turn a blind eye to most indiscretions commited by them and give them every borderline decision going. Whether that's through preference as they support them or fear of the flak that will inevitably come their way if they do their job properly I don't know, but it's plain as day we are not on a level playing field. I wish we could get out of the shit hole that is Scottish football and all its corruption and/or incompetence but we're stuck with it I'm afraid.
