"The son of Pele has explained how the Brazilian football icon is "embarrassed" to leave his home due to mobility issues.

Speaking to TV Globo, Edinho explained how his father, who turns 80 in October, is struggling in the aftermath of a hip operation and cannot walk unaided.

Pele - widely regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time - has experienced a number of health concerns over recent years, including prostate and hip problems.

He also had a kidney stone removed in 2019 after spending five days in a Paris hospital for a urinary infection.

"He is very fragile in relation to mobility. He underwent a hip transplant and did not undergo adequate, ideal rehabilitation," Edinho said, adding that Pele had become "sheepish and reclusive".

"So, he has this mobility problem, which ends up causing a certain depression.

"Today he can no longer walk properly, only with the walker. He is embarrassed, he doesn't want to go out, be on the street."

A true legend of the game. Can't believe he's nearly 80!!!

Hope he recovers his mobility.

I didn't think he got embarrassed. He turned up to collect the player of the century award, even though Maradona won the vote. Fifa changed the criteria to win when it became apparent the world doesn't feel the way they do about Pele. Also counts about 700 goals he scored in friendlies in his 1200 goal haul, I'm not aware of them counting anyone else's. A shameless self publisist.
Before anyone starts, he was a bit before my time and maybe he was the best player in the world at one point, but I'm not going to think he's the Greatest of all time, just because fifa tell me to. Doesn't even make the top three for me.

[/QUO
Only scored a mere 500 ''proper'' goals, shite right enough.

Not shite at all. Very good actually. But there's a reason they ram the 1200 goals down your throat like a viagra induced boaby. It's to hold it up as a untouchable achievement that can only be achieved by the greatest of all time.

Who's ramming things down peoples throat?, a tad melodramatic methinks. For what its worth Pele shades it over Marradonna for me, but just to illustrate I'm not just an old git Messi has overtaken both. In my humble opinion of course.

Every article wrote about him for as long as I can remember mentions 1200 goal Pele. Goals in friendlies and training and charity matches and escape to victory don't count. 500 goal Pele, still an impressive total, but on a par with dozens of other players, doesn't suit the greatest of all time arguments.

ive never seen scenes like that at the end of a game in my life, was mental
I was amazed at the gear the fans were all wearing.
Most of it we weren't wearing until the 70s!
Bloody flash French always miles ahead when it comes to fashion.

He transcended football, similar to Ali and Woods. Arguably the greatest.

Over 70 goals for Brazil and 3 World Cups kind of puts him up there right enough.

We will all be in Peles condition one day, hopefully his memories stay with him and he recovers physically.
Good response mate. There some feckin eejits on here thinking they are been funny and they are far from it. Pele was a superb athlete and a brilliant footballer, a stand out in an era of violent hammer throwers. I hope he manages to recover mobility. Maybe paying the price now for the heavy tackles he endured.

Wouldn't disagree that he's the most famous footballer of all time. But he's fifas darling and they've been pushing the Pele is the greatest line for 50 years. And when he lost the vote for player of the century by a landslide, they changed the rules and put him out front and centre.

1958, 1962 and 1970 WC all won by Brazil

1966 WC Not won by Brazil. Pele was injured.

I genuinely get younger observers down playing the achievements of players from years ago because frankly some games look as if they are in slow motion. The mantra is players were slower, fitness was lower etc, and therefore their place in history is diminished. Pele without possibly being able to provide proof I suspect would have been a superstar in any era, in short never mind the outrageous goal scoring records, he was an absolute beast of an athlete, quick, built like a brick shit house and a supreme team player.
