Happened to be in Hamilton on Friday night as moving house and needed some shopping, popped into Sainsbury's about 715 to be met by a horde of mankies standing drinking in the car park after going into the store and buying a cargo.

This was in full view of other shoppers (some with children) - complaints to the staff were ignored despite the manky gits standing directly outside the store.

A police van was parked about 100 yards away with about 8 officers in it who sat back and did nothing. I have contacted SLC today with a complaint but don't intend to hold my breath.

Were they doing anything else?

As they were Tims, then it goes without saying I'd want the lot of them huckled and jailed just for that, but c'mon to %^*& mate. Did you actually just type 'drinking in full view of shoppers'

What did you think would happen to these poor people that they had to witness someone having a beer? :D

You should have walked the 100 yards and pointed the offence out to the 8 officers videoing them whilst doing it.

If they done nothing then reported it to their bosses.

I'm sure SLC will direct you to the Police as they cannot do much same As Sainsbury's.

They weren't just having a beer mate - as someone who has been stopped and searched when leaving a party to make sure I wasn't in possession of drink, I think I am entitled to get angry when the rules are not being applied across the board.

Do you think when we are next at Hamilton and decide to buy a cargo that we can stand in the car park and Police Scotland will allow us?

We're back to equality before the law

"Right lads, we're on high alert for terrorism and violence, keep an eye open for any sus...hang on, is that a bloke drinking outside a supermarket? CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

(change that for whistling the Billy Boys too before anyone complains)

Why is everyone jumping on the OPs back? Mhanks committing an offence with open air drinking, in full view of a van load of plod, and you're on the OPs case for not kicking up enough of a stink?

Probably because the vast majority of football fans are sick fed up of the way they are treated differently to the rest of society. If it were a gig on nearby or a comedy festival or a rugby match no one would bat an eye lid at someone standing having a drink but football fans get looked upon like utter scum for the same thing (granted in this case they were utter scum)

Are they mhanky feni@n b@startds? Yes.
Were they commiting an offence? Yes
Is mhanky feni@n b@astards standing with a beer in their hands enough to outrage me to the point I complain to shop assistants and post online? Not a hope in hell.

I despise them. I despise their club, staff, players fans etc etc but people getting upset over a football fan with a can of lager is desperate stuff.

OP is correct. If they search our busses then why are they not taking the appropriate action against them when it is being done right in front of them?

To all the folk getting on the OP's back.

Try having a can of lager in the street on your way to Ibrox or roundabout the stadium and see how swiftly you'll be dealt with by the Police.

The problem is, again, inconsistency.

For what it's worth it's a joke football fans are deemed 2nd class citizens when it comes to things like this.

It's all fun and games when you have 50'000 pished up women heading along to a Take That concert in full view of the police, some so blitzed they can hardly walk, yet have the audacity to have a can of lager on your way to the match and the chances are you will receive a nice fine from the PF's office.

Happened to me on 2 occasions when I was 19, both times the Police van came round the corner like something out the fucking Professionals with 2 arseholes flying out the van and grabbed me as if the can of lager was a hand grenade.

I totally agree with you and the way that football fans are treated - I have and am certain you and the majority of posters on here have seen the heavy handedness of plod when dealing with ourselves. It wasn't just standing with a can of lager it was a full on party in a crowded shopping area in full view of plod with no intervention.

Is it too much to ask plod to do what they are paid for and enforce the law or does it only apply to one section of football supporters?

Its illegal to drink in the street full stop, not just football fans.

You're correct.

Have a wander by Hampden the next time a big concert is on then and see how the Police go about enforcing this law. They usually enforce it by sitting about in their vans or standing about the surrounds of the stadium having a laugh with the people openly drinking in the street heading to the venue.

The approach is completely different at a football match.

We are seen as 'the other' and sensible, common sense policing is completely out the window.

The law is the problem, but the inconsistent enforcement of it is what annoys folk.

At events police are sometimes told not to intervene in minor offences for a number of reasons. Sounds like the van 100 yards away... in which the OP could have approached to make a complaint... was a support unit van with specialist officers probably tasked with specific instructions.

Exactly the point I was making, you just put it better. It's getting fucking ridiculous now.

Zr if you are pissed off regarding the consistency, then fine mate, I get that, but the 'some of them had kid's' faux offended, hand wringing pish is just laughable. If that genuinely upsets folk, then fair enough. I wonder, what do you do at the game when folk swear? Go and complain to Rangers on behalf of all the bairns?

What may seem petty to some the OP is correct, if it was one person walking down the street with a can of lager the police would pounce, and fine you, this shouldn't be any different.

I swear at games mate and have on occasion been pulled up for it and that's fine - you aren't comparing two similar situations. As I have already said football fans are treated with utter contempt by the the police (one set in particular) if I want to go to the shops with my wife/daughter its okay to have to manoeuvre around people drinking?

Sainsbury's should have contacted the Police also if you want you could report Sainsbury to the council pretty sure you can't consume booze the premises or even contact the head office saying how disappointed and alarmed explaining bla bla you were that the manager did nothing about a group of thugs drinking at the entrance.

yes, theseretail parks are owned by land companies and stores lease their site from them.
dont know if laws of the land apply, think they would.
Pretty sure the bylaws stopping drinking in public places excludes private property.

In all fairness - if he had walked the 100 yards to the cops to report it they would have probably done nothing. Instead they'd probably have had a go at the OP for getting involved and told him to get on his way. Escalating about their heads will result in nothing either. They always do this in Hamilton (sure they'll do it elsewhere as well). I used to live in Hamilton and would sometimes be at the shops when they are playing Hamilton and the drinking in public was rife - not a word said and only the occasional involvement from the Police.

That's all well and good if the same rules are applied across the board. When it comes to songs, chants, banners and now it seems public drinking, it does appear to be one law for them and another for us.

Somebody at Sainsbury's failed in their duties..........probably a Bheast.

Well I hope no one wants to have a go when the wonderful football fans who probably only want a quick wee drink outside the supermarket before the match wreck the stadium or belt out IRAoke on the 23rd! It's just the way it is.
