CELTIC may be the only Scottish side to have won a European Cup but it’s RANGERS who are the country’s most successful club when it comes to European football history.

The Ibrox side feature in tenth spot on a list that shows the amount of points collected from each club for the UEFA country ranking since 1955/56.

That’s better than the likes of AC Milan, Inter, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid – and rivals Celtic who find themselves in 15th place.

Two other Scottish clubs make the top 100 – with Aberdeen down in 92nd and Hibs in 96th.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Spanish superstars Real Madrid and Barcelona lead the way in first and second respectively, ahead of Benfica, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Ajax, Man United, Porto and Dynamo Kyiv make up the rest of the top 10 of all-time just ahead of Rangers.

Next come AC Milan, Anderlecht, Inter and Red Star Belgrade ahead of Celtic – who feature ahead of other big names like Sporting Lisbon, Liverpool, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

The list has been compiled by Swiss Football Data and will no doubt re-open the debate on which of the Old Firm clubs has contributed more to Scottish football’s European history.

Celtic had their glory day in Lisbon when they hoisted the European Cup in 1967, becoming the first British club to win the trophy.

Rangers followed that by lifting the Cup Winners Cup in Barcelona in 1972 while both have now lost UEFA Cup/Europa League finals in the past 20 years.

Both clubs have enjoyed success in the Europa League in recent seasons, progressing out of the groups and into the knockout stages on various occasions.

That sustained success has seen Scotland power up the rankings into ninth place and handed Celtic an automatic berth in the Champions League group stage this season.

Rangers could yet join them there but will need to first overturn a two-goal deficit to Union SG on Tuesday night if they are to reach the play-off round.
