With the news of Steven Gerrard looking like being the manager and the other so called candidates, can we all maybe take a step back and look at out current situation and realistically say.....who else?
Financially - in order to get a big named manager you are looking at massive wages and still no guarantee of success. Also, to ‘lure’ a manager currently in a job you are also looking at compensation of upwards of possibly £2m (McInnes was £1m and he’s low on spectrum). We as a club can not afford this and before we go on about Warburton/Pedro etc, that’s done - focus on the now.
Reputation - Unfortunately we as well as a lot of other big name clubs in the world don’t hold the same pull and reputation as we once did. Gone are the days of us vying for players with EPL/Spain/Germany. We need to remember that and that includes managers. Realistically, what big name manager wants to manage up here, only reason they got Brenda is he supports them and needs to rebuild after being sacked.
Current availability - the amount of names branded has been mental but not unforeseen. Do we honestly want Warnock or that ilk? They are dinasaurs in the game - if Warnock was so good he’d be getting jobs in EPL (just using as example). GVB in in a job which he enjoys, had had decent success but not so much this season, again reverts to compensation and wages. FDB also, did ok at Ajax but will carry big wages and as seen, no guarantee to be good (see Crystal Palace).
I think as a support we need to really evaluate our sitation and say right, if SG is manager, back him and if it fails it fails. The club are changing its ethos, maybe a young aspiring manager under a DoF is way to go.....a strong number 2 to help. And before anyone says.....SG brings with him an aura as a great player, good contacts and a possible relationship with Liverpool which we can buy into.
Let’s get real, let’s get behind the new manager (whoever it is) and let’s push forward together!
