Record Penalty Misses

After training, get a penalty kick comp going, to wind down. Work out stats from that, and who has best average. Will also keep the keepers up to the challenge.

In terms of importance, Andy Penman missed a few.
First one that sprung to mind for me.
I think he probably missed more than he scored, and certainly some important ones as you say.
Funnily enough he was the first player I recall being referred to as a dead ball specialist!

Eric Caldow missed quite a few too, but he did have a decent success rate

I guess it must be difficult. He’s taken so many penalties now, that surely GK’s in the league will have studied where he normally puts them, ‘tells’ in the run up/eyes from previous videos. I know I would have.

Just having taken that volume might be reason to switch takers for a while to mix it up.

I’m not keen on the same player taking multiple penalties in the same match in all honesty. Messes with the takers head I think.

That said, Tav‘s record is phenomenal at circa 75% success rate as I’ve detailed in an earlier post. That’s with over 40 penalties taken. Better than Roofe, for example. I’m not convinced the ‘doubters’ would have been coming down so hard if it were another player who missed.

I think someone else should be taking pens now after Roofe

Sakala takes them for Zambia,I always like to see a striker hitting pens

If anything it helps with confidence and has the added bonus if inflating their numbers
Morelos?
We’re you comfortable with Kenny Miller?
It’s an individual skill, in my opinion.
I’m not sure there is a particular position on the pitch that would cover the quality for a better penalty taker than any other.

Always thought if get another penalty in same game a different player should take.
don’t know stats but got feeling more second penalties are missed than first ones in same game.

I've never liked us having one principal penalty taker. They wont score them all then, if they're absent, the depute might be out of practice. I'd rotate and choose who's most up for it on the day, pen by pen.

Missed two in a game we were awarded 3 mate.

Arteta scored the third. Was either 2-2 or 3-3 at Dens Park.

That’s why I was sad not to see Itten given the second

His first penalty was terrible too. Keeper made a mess of it and dived over the ball.

Itten should have taken the 2nd one.
First things first, any penalty that goes in is a good one.
There is no such thing as a bad goal scored for your team.
Secondly, why Itten?
Does he have a proven track record of success that I’m unaware of?

It was a poor penalty last night some clubs change the second penalty taker
They do, but why?
Don’t you think that a different penalty taker faces the same pressure.
The keeper is asking the same question either way.
”The last one went that way, he might change it / he might think that I think he might change it so he won’t.”
Same question applies to any second taker.

I think they do it for a few different reasons and tbh, I think I’d change the taker if I was a manager. There are two reasons why I would do it.

First is that I think there is added pressure on the taker for the second penalty due to them possibly overthinking the mind games.

My main point though is that the goalkeeper gets an up close look at the takers technique/run up etc and could have a better chance of guessing which way the taker is going to go second time around.

As far as I can see from a quick google search he scores 80% of penalties for us. Roofe is good at them but Tav is someone I never feel worried about even though he’s missed a few, down to the fact he’s taken so many

I do know where you’re coming from.
I tried to cover your first reason in the previous post.
Your second point though is the big one.
At the top level, there is so much video evidence available for keepers, and coaches, to learn from.
The short or staggered run up is so that the keeper can’t read the body shape of the taker.
For me, there are two answers here.
Firstly, power and height when taking,
The keeper can’t dive up the way and we can’t all take a penalty like Jorginho.
Secondly, do not have a dedicated penalty taker as this at least means a keeper or coach studying a taker has more to do for each opponent.

Good point that there will be plenty of stats on his penalties so maybe we should have a few rotations.

On the award of a second pen I think it should by taken by who is feeling confident, preferably a striker but clearly Lowry was the player brimming with confidence on Friday.
I believe the keepers chances of saving a second pen go up with the same taker.

I would be extremely nervous if Sakala was taking penalties for us. He isn’t the most composed in front of goal, let’s face it.

This for me it is all about mind games

Sorry to go back to my original post but we know Bob McPhail missed 13, short of phoning Super Ally on Talksport tomorrow does anyone know how many he missed?

You would think a striker would be best candidate to take penalties

Stats are in post #47. Tav's success rate after 44 penalties is circa 75% - that's very good in comparison to most given the number he's taken..

The 1st penalty was lucky but agree it was a goal and we move on. It definitely was in his mind on the second one.

A 2nd penalty in such a short space of time should have had a different kicker.

My reason for Itten was the fact he is a striker.

I think the issue with Tav taking them is that his recent record isn’t that great. His record for his last 10 pens is probably about 50%.
Can alter the sample size any way to suit your argument though, for example his record for the last 4 is 75% I think.

He’s still the second best taker at the club, and the one I’m actually the least nervous about taking them :))

Fair to say he 50% for his last two ha ha.:) He's missed 3 out of his last 10 - so still 70%. In fact those three are over his last 16 penalties, so that would be a success rate of over 81% in that period of 3 misses. One on Friday, one against Ross County last January and one against Aberdeen the same month. That's excluding penalty shoot-outs I think.

January is clearly a bad month for Tav taking penalties!:):))

As a rule I'd go for a striker but I'll never forget Kenny Miller's dreadful straight down the middle miss against Inverness, 2010, ended 1-1. A few months later the latter beat Celtic so the league got won. At the time I thought he'd blown it for us, but we got off with it. SDTM pens should be banned !!!
