Is this now a thing of the past ?
Does it not happen because of recruiting foreign players or have the bigger clubs decided on developing players from youth levels ?

Scott pitman played against us yesterday and was at boness United 3 years ago. Decent players are in the juniors however I doubt anyone is at the quality that we require

Think that you are right when you suggest that the man reason is bigger clubs developing their own players. However, farming out younger guys to the juniors for a spell would expose them to a competitive environment which would benefit them. (something that we could have used at Livingston yesterday.)
Rangers had some great players out of the juniors. Bobby Russell from Shettleston was a standout as were blokes, like Eric Caldow and David Wilson, who became regulars in the Scottish team. Some, who like myself, who fall into the ancient category, may remember, Alex Scott signing from the Bo’ness junior team, going straight into the Rangers side and in his first game, scoring a hat-trick at Ibrox against Falkirk.

The biggest difference is fitness. Going from training 2-3 hours a week to training full-time and playing on a Saturday is massive. Most players from the juniors would look well off it if they made the step up. It would take a while to get that sharpness and teams wouldn't be willing to wait when they could pick up freebies who are already at that level.

Dougie Imrie has made a cracking career for himself coming from the Juniors. Singed pro Lanark juniors who at the time were central league bottom division, granted they won the league.

There is usually a best player to play junior thread every few months or so on pie and bovril. Most the players mentioned who had great careers, Dalgliesh etc did play Junior but were already signed pros and sent to the juniors as youths.

For a team at our level and with our aspirations, the answer is yes.
There are probably not even any players within the first division that would be capable of stepping up even as a squad player at our club.
