Sam Lammers

There is a player in Lammers as his pre season form showed (in my opinion). However, he's falling into the Hagi category where he's technically gifted but we don't know how or where to use him best.

I don’t know, I’ve not written him off. I just know I don’t give a shit what players do in friendlies because they’re meaningless and nothing but a fitness builder. Matondo looked like Vinicius Jr in a friendly vs West Ham, even Sebo looked a decent player in one. It’s desperate to include non official goals as a defence of a player who has a truly pitiful 6 goals for his last 5 clubs.
This has always been my views on friendlies! Sebo came back one season, had bulked up and looked like there was a real player there! We've had trialsters with us who looked world beaters and then we haven't even signed them. And then the youngsters we all think will be the next Barry Ferguson before floating around the lowlands leagues on loan and let go for free.

Hes played 222 career games as a striker scoring 76 goals and played 10 out of position, mostly with us. Ill trust your eye test though.

That includes youth football and goals for PSVs B team.

His actual record in senior league games is 121 appearances and 26 goals…16 of which came in one season for Heerenveen.

If he’s more of a creative player? His assists tally 8 in that time.

This was simply a signing that should not have happened, and especially not for the reasonable chunk of our budget it took. Btw I’m being generous only including league games as his stats in Europe only make it worse.

Lammers is a real conundrum to me
I see flashes of real quality and creativity - good runs - some clever passes -his first touch annoys me as it often draws challenges
I am giving him a bit of time as I feel we are trying to mould him into a number 10 and he was mostly a centre forward so learning a new role but not seeing any improvement - at the moment I feel sima and Matondo offer more to the team in a creative sense
I just feel he is on the periphery of games - not making the contribution or having the impact I expected
Guys like cantwell and hagi would in my opinion have a greater impact in this role
Like you I feel he maybe not be a success as to get the best out of him as a number 10 means removing width from the team and it’s looking like we need this to beat teams in Scotland by stretching their back 4

Taking the goals, and even his ability out of the question, its still 98% of his career. He is a striker and thats it, despite the incredulity in here

That’s fine, there’s plenty of guys who look great at youth level and live off that for a few years before eventually they find their actual level by mid 20s. There’s also plenty who play one position as a youth then shift as they enter the real game and adapt.

He might well be a 9 or a 10 or something in between, but that’s immaterial to the fact established over the last 5 years that he is a player who doesn’t score goals, doesn’t assist goals, and makes very little impact wherever he’s been.

One of the worst forward options we’ve spent £3m+ on ever - I can’t think of another who we’ve spent that, or more on, who was worse.

He couldn’t lace Hagi’s boots
Classic revisionism re Hagi.
A likeable and talented player but ultimately he made a limited impact out with the 55 season.
Lammers has pedigree and has shown in flashes that he’s a good footballer.
Will the manager get the best out of him? Is Lammers capable of getting to and staying at a higher level? Not sure but certainly not writing him off or craving the immediate return of Hagi.

That’s a very unfair assessment of Hagi. He had a bad injury that kept him out for over a year, his eagerness alone to get back into the side since the start of the season had shown more of what Lammers has done to date. Hagi has been deliberately overlooked for a signing with limited ability/consistency.

What pedigree does Lammers have?

It’s not revisionism to say from what I’ve seen from both players Lammers couldn’t lace Hagi’s boots - and I wasn’t a huge fan of Hagi at times but there’s no doubt he was a key contributor in a league winning season. Something I’d hazard a guess Lammers won’t be. He looks the worst of all the new players for me.

Better tell Lammers then

"I have always been a real striker," Lammers said. "I have always played as a striker. I am not a striker who stays in the box only, I like to get on the ball and have a connection with team-mates.
Thinking you are a striker and actually performing as one are two separate things.

I agree In hagis defence he was rarely used behind a front forward - he was usually out wide which exposed his lack of pace
I find it ironic that the system Beale has been playing offered hagi the chance to play in the role where I felt he would be best but he has went out on loan
It’s Beales call and he will be judged on this

Just my opinion mate. Hagi continually gets caught on the ball and often slows our play down. As for doing more than Lammers has done to date- that's unfair based on a very small sample size.
Agree to disagree and all that. And by the way- I like Hagi.

A pish signing in my opinion. 9 goals in 4 years and having a nasty injury should have been enough to rule out the signing.

Better tell Beale as well. He thinks he is a 10

Sounds a bit like Pinocchio, I'm a real boy/striker !

You think that someone that has played in 2 of the top 5 leagues, moved for a big transfer fee and also played in Holland doesn't have some pedigree? Fair enough!
55 season was a long time ago.
We aren't too patient when it comes to new players with Hateley and Miko being the perfect examples. I am prepared to wait and see rather than rush to judgement after a handful of games.

I’m just still pissed off he let him go after all we and him put in for his rehab, he would have contributed this season. I hope I’m wrong with Lammers, I liked the thought of his signing. If we start to play better things will improve all over.

The sheer number of clubs he has had and his overall stats should have been massive red flags for Beale and made this signing an absolute non-starter.

In 9 seasons since making his pro debut he's hit double figures twice, just under half of his goals came in the Dutch second tier. If he is a "real striker" then he's simply not a very good one.

Really think there’s a very good player in there. Unlucky in old firm game and done well tonight, hoping he gets a couple & goes on a bit of a run for the rest of the season.

There's something there with Lammers. He's technically very sharp with both feet. I can see him turning out to be a decent signing.

Who is the old boy on the bench in the white baseball cap?

Looked like he put a rocket up Lammers' arse just before he came on.
