Set piece coach

I wonder if this is something we would benefit from.

Tom Culshaw was credited with masterminding our set pieces under Gerrard and we were excellent defensively and offensively most of the time. Since he has departed well...

I think we will settle defensively in general with a consistent backline and good teams will always create chances but we are dreadful at corners now. Two goals tonight and tbh at every single corner we've conceded this season you've feared it could be a goal.

Maybe something to consider, I know we have plenty of coaches but specialists are invaluable.

A good ball in will cause any defence problems. Their second goal looked likely as soon as it left the guys foot

Lost the league last season thanks to our inability to defend corners. It's clearly got no better

This is my biggest criticism of us this season. Corners FOR & AGAINST we don’t look like doing anything.

Bottom line… we weren’t super tonight but if you are well organised/ drilled your taking 2-0 lead with you next week. It’s players & coaches responsibility.

It’ll be a long season both domestic & in Europe if situation isn’t addressed ASAP!

Davies and Yilmas will be targeted when they play.
The data shows Yilmaz is actually pretty good in the air, was in the upper percentiles for aerial duels in the Turkish league last year. There have been shit loads of full backs his height who have always managed fine as long as they are coached properly.

I have to agree, we seem to have a massive overload on the six yard line, I thought last season was to protect McGregor but it’s the same now. Unless someone is aggressive enough to make the first contact it seems to create problems with players unsure who is going for the ball then very little time to react.

Our throw ins invariably result in a chance for the opposition. They were awful last year, but tonight there was 2 that resulted in breakaways in the first half when we were almost at the corner flag!

Agree bears it’s worrying me. The amount of goals we lose are coming from corners. Rebounds and scrambles.

The defence is the exact same as the one two seasons ago that broke defensive records over and over, other than Sands of course.

It's %^*& all to do with their height, they need coaching.
Thiago Silva isn't what you class as a tall CH but he is very good in the air. Obviously he's a good few levels above but he is aggressive and attacks the ball. That doesn't need a set piece coach.

We just don’t have a team that are that good in the air, no coach is solving that.
Are you saying they can't jump high enough? Surely they can improve if coached on jumping, positioning and technique to header the ball more often.

How so ? So your saying a left sided Swedish international isn’t missed ? Dearie me ! He’s arguably our best centre half !
I rate Helander. Very highly. But the guys been out the team for ages. I believe we can do just aswell if the team are coached correctly. Best centre half, but never fit.

What if Silva is set up incorrectly?
As in he's told to not attack the ball the player you're marking is attacking? That sort of thing?

I can accept players don't choose to play zonal marking but if the ball is falling on top of you and you don't jump to clear it, I'm not sure you can blame the setup.

Aye fair enough, but he’s definitely a big miss, and a massive upgrade on what we have if fit. Hopefully Davies does well.

That’s really not true. 75% of the back 4 is the same as under Gerrard.
Aribo is 6 foot 3 and was crucial at set pieces.

Helander must be about 6 foot 4 as well.

Tav and Barisic were never the reason we were successful at set pieces.

You cannot coach that back 4 that started tonight to be that much better at set pieces, what you see is what you get.

I've not seen the goals on tv yet but zonal marking needs binned, you're letting the attacker getting a running jump while you're left with a standing jump,it's garbage and not a welcome addition to our play.

Our best defender at attacking the ball in the air in both boxes will soon be leaving the club. He needs replaced as we are short(no pun intended) at centre half.
