12 hasn't been used for a few years. Number was retired in honour of the fans.

While I get your overall point, I don’t think they’re meaningless because no teams have strikers wearing a 2 for instance, no outfield players wear 1, no centre half is sporting the number 9.

So they do have some feet all purpose even if it’s mostly tradition.

Clint Dempsey was the striker who wore number 2 for spurs.

Our own number 6 has been a defender, midfielder and striker in the last 10-15 yrs.

Generally - numbers mean nowt other than preference to a player.
