Tav still has a big part to play

I don't think Max Aarons is as much of an upgrade as people think. He will have to compete with Tav, and if Tav is fitter then last season then I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps his place in the team.

It will be Rangers Reviews job of telling everyone how great a job Aarons is doing , that will kill Tav from playing regular at RB

Tav now will be used sparingly at RB and more at CB which he’s proved to be more than decent

Totally agree with the OP.

Needs to take a step back from the corners. We had two corners taken by Rice and Curtis(I think), and who was on the end of them with headers but Tav. One of which unluckily hit the side net. Tav took the next corner that came to nothing.

Get in the box Skipper. :)

I'd disagree. From the bad side it showed that the likes of Propper, Dowell, King and McCausland aren't good enough. From the good side it showed that the likes of Tav, Diomande, Bajrami and some of the youngsters have a lot to contribute.
I'd personally add Barron to that list, he does a lot of good off the ball but his positioning is all over the place.

His good qualities aren't good enough and his bad qualities cost us goals.

Tav took one corner, Fernandez should have scored from it.

What in the name of sweet baby Jane. His first game after a week of intense training FFS, how on earth can you get to this conclusion.

I think the game today showed that Tav will still have a big part to play for us this season and maybe even beyond. When he came on he settled the team down and led by example. He also encouraged and coached the youngsters. Maybe not a first team starter all the time but a very valuable person to have in the squad.
We’ll need another 6 signings before Tav isn’t in our best 11.

With his legs starting to go, playing in a more central position might suit him better. Not having to bomb up and down the wing and be a constant source of creation for us, might work for him. He's a good footballer, why so many of our fans insist that he isn't, is absolutely absurd.

We should have been succession planning and phasing him out over time, but due to injuries and our own piss poor recruitment, we've had to constantly rely on him.

Of course he still has a part to play, Tav is a top player.. The last 3-4 managers (post Gerrard) hasn’t been great on the eye style or football, styles that don’t suit Tav - but he’s still performed 80% of the time. I believe in a team playing RMs football brand we will see Tav back to his best .

I’ve said all pre-season that he should be retained. Alternative full-back cover. 2nd/3rd choice back-up at CB.

Great pro for the younger players. Probably one of the best trainers at the club every single day. Always, available.

It really is a no-brainer. And Martin will be of the same mindset.

He made all the difference in our team today with his leadership and composure, not to mention having a great game.
He's said himself that he sees himself reverting to CB as he gets on in years and I really don't see any reason why not.
He reads the game brilliantly, can coach the players around him effectively and in the few times he's played at CB, he certainly hasn't let himself down.
I'd be happy to have him playing there rather than a good few of our players that CB is apparently their best position....no names but I'll assume you know who I mean!

I wouldn't be against him being moved into the midfield, he's a decent player, he has to many mistakes in him to be playing for a team aiming to win the league with him in defence. Defenders mistakes get highlighted more often or not because they lead to a goal, mistakes in the middle of the park go alot more under the radar as 9 times out of 10 the mistakes been covered by the defence and its forgoton about.

As things stand he's our best CB. Far more composed than Souttar and a really goof organiser. He reads the game well also.

Will probably be a 4/5th choice CB behind Coady, the Wolves loaned, Souttar and Fernandez.
Cover for Aarons at RB too.

Id you rematch the match with headphones in you can hear him triggering the press and instructions to every single player the entire second half.

Where and when to run, full of encouragement.

It'll get some folk off his back, we all know his peak came on the Seville run but hes far from finished.

Sandy Jardine spent last few years of his career as an excellent CB (sweeper in my day). Same as Tav, had a reasonable turn of pace but also had the experience to read situations developing. Hope JT can do the same.
Its posts like this particularly the bold bit that make me buzz. Still learning new information on the bears despite my Rangers da status!

Thanks mate

I don't understand those who say "it's a friendly, means nothing".

I recall many saying the same with Beale's new team while others were screaming from the rooftops the glaring faults in the system.

These games are huge for improving match fitness and gelling a team with many new faces.

While Bajrami, Diomande and Tavernier came on and the performance improved, we are miles from where we need to be.

A lot of work to be done in the next couple of weeks before Pana. In the transfer market and on the training ground.

Great point, i would rather listen to Defoe's opinion of Tav than the wet wipes on here's opinion of him.
