Thoughts of Marco Negri ?

He had a ridiculous period when everything he did went in the back of the net, but even then he was odd. After that, he was just a joke of a man for us.

He came into the pub with a lot of the players after a legends charity match and my uncle drunkenly asked him what the real reason behind his loss of form was

He was in a strop for the rest of the night, McCulloch was laughing at him

Great half of the 97/98 season, then just disappeared. Always looks odd seeing him wearing any other strip apart from the home and away ones from that season.

Definitely a big factor in us not winning 10, but we might have been out of the title race a lot earlier had it not been for his goals in the first half of the season.

I think Negri knows now he should’ve done things differently. I used to be extremely cynical about his reappearance on the scene like a lot of other posters are, however there’s a poster comes on these threads who has had dealings with him and persuaded me to rethink.

I don’t think he’s after ‘the blue pound’. I think he just appreciates what he had here now more than he did at the time.

The failure to do 10 was down to many factors, of which Negri was one but not the biggest.

One of those unique stories where all involved come across as knobs, tbh.

Fantastic goal scorer and I loved him from August to December 1997

I despise Negri now. Had nothing to do with us until he realised that us fans idolise old players, he jumped onto this and alot fell for it!!! Would be interesting to see what he has earned the last few years down to his association with us.

What's everyone's thoughts of Negri ? He had a tremendous 6 months when he first arrived , then got eye injury and hardly kicked a ball after that . He seems to be everywhere talking about Rangers these days . I remember reading Amoruso's autobiography and he didn't seem very keen on him ?
In my view, Negri is proud to have played for Rangers.

After a blistering start, it did not work out for him at the club. Personally, I don't hold that against him.

As to talk of him chasing the "blue pound", personally, I think that is absolute nonsense.

The best natural striker I've seen in a Rangers strip.
Me too. I remember him heading a ball from about 12 yards out. I was up waaaaaaay before everyone else so sure he had scored. I even had time to think I am gonna look a right daftie if this doesn't go in.

It went in. Doesn't matter what happened, it just did. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. All I know is he knew where the goal was and I loved it.

Can't remember who it was said Negri told them to put the ball to the near post every time. The other player said what if you're not there? He replied I am ALWAYS there.

It hit me a couple of years ago with Tav and Candeias firing balls in at the front post all the time with no takers how much we needed someone with that instinct. Still do imo.

Agree with what’s been said.
What pissed me off even more was popping up in fernando’s last few days.

Wasn't arsed with us when he was here. Now realises how massive we are and how lucky he was to play for us. To help him earn a coin or keep himself relevant?. Who knows, maybe was just moody on the pitch and different off it.

Seemed to develop a large dose of Rangersitis only when he had a book to sell. The gullible in our support lapped it up.

An absolute twat. Met him in riverside casino in 97, right sulky bastard with holes in his shoes. Couldnt give a %^*&. 20 yrs later he is considered as some sort of legend, far from it.

Correct

Had mental health problems when at Rangers as previously mentioned on loads of other threads. Players aren't exempt from mental health issues.

I don’t think he would have been able to continue his scoring streak as it was phenomenal, the quality of some of his goals were something that we simply weren’t used to.

I honestly thought we’d found a replacement for McCoist but without fully knowing what happened during that “Squash game” or the fallout within the squad after it, it’s hard to say whether his reluctance to play was a result of him being ostracised. I personally think he spat the dummy myself and just collected a wage.

I don’t think we’d even still be talking about him If Mols hadn’t got that injury.

He would’ve. He was that good. He just wasn’t that arsed.

A real enigma of a player, looked like he was going to smash goal scoring records that season and then faded away completely.

His recent return to the Rangers fold has been equally baffling. I’d imagine he must harbour a lot of regrets about how things turned out after that initial 6 month period.

I can see that, hes now maybe wiser (and in a better place mentally) to understand how privileged he was to play for us

I was only 12 in 98 but without his goals in the first half of that season would we have been anywhere near the title. Sounds like his form before Xmas was the only form from any player that season!

Lucky to even played for us in the first place.
Players who’ve graced the jersey for many a season, Scottish or otherwise haven’t pulled on the so-called Blue Pound as much as Negri. A decent half season doesn’t make you a legend at our club.

He’s made a good living off the back of his half season at Rangers

Utter waster who ripped the piss out of us and threw away a career. Someone who gets invited to every rangers event going by fans despite this and others far more deserving.

A chancer who could have been a legend

Wish he would fk off. Scored a phenomenal amount of goals in a short time for us. Looked utterly miserable as he did so. Then got an ‘eye’ injury for whatever reason and hardly kicked a ball after that. We lost to Kilmarnock on the 2nd last day and he wasn’t even a sub. Now he’s playing in legends games etc talking us up with a big smile on his face... he can fk off

Total arse of a man, this is the guy who would not celebrate scoring a goal. Looked and behaved like he hated playing for Rangers. Now a blue pound grabbing imposter.....honestly cant stand him.

If it wasn't for the goals against dundee utd I would have forgotten about the lady's front bottom,

and for the sake of the club, he was a lady's front bottom!

Might have been the best striker to wear a Rangers top, but only for 6 months. Oh what could have been.

Michael Mols could have been an absolute legend until that horrible injury. Again, oh what could have been.

It wasn’t just down to Negri, of course not, but the fact we lost the title by just two points at the very death has always made me convinced that if Negri had remained focussed and in form he would have been worth more points to us than that.

By way of example, we scored a massive 51 goals up until the turn of the year with Negri contributing 30 of them, but then just 25 more in the second half of the season with the Italian enigma adding just 3 more.

It was undeniably a massive factor.
How about you blame the guy who replaced him and not Negri himself.
If he’s not in the team he can’t score.

Incidentally, in his few appearances in the latter part of the season he still out scored the “main” striker Gordon Durie.

Im fucking sick of the nonsense that gets spouted every time a Negri thread appears, whilst Durie gets off Scot free.
Durie scored one goal after he replaced Negri.
Yes, one fucking solitary goal in half a season.
He got a hat trick prior to his barren spell and that was his sum total for the entire season. He scored in two games out of 26 appearances.
Them’s the facts.

It's not really about "10" though, is it? He was here 4 years and played something like a total of 30 games; of those 30 he scored 32 goals. I think it's sensible to presume he was capable of giving more during his time as a player here.

waster. Undoubted talent but ruined it.

Having said that, I have met him at Ibrox on few occasions and he was always a gentleman.
