Uncapped Scottish Bears

Morning all,

A conversation I had with a pal last week about John Brown got me thinking. Who are the other Scottish Rangers players than were inexplicably not picked by Scotland?

Brown is the most obvious, could make a case for Scott Wilson I suppose. Generally most of our Scottish players will have atleast one cap. Even complete dross.

I'm the 90s Broon and Roxburgh had to show no favouritism or in fact any Ger who was in a winning team.

To think the likes of McKimmie and Boyd have about 100+ caps between them.

Robertson and Munro had hardly any caps sums up how pathetic our set up was.

David Robertson has 3 caps - the fact he was behind both Tom Boyd and Tosh "Warchest" McKinlay shows the school teacher mentality of both Roxburgh and Brown.

For a Rangers or celtic player with over 100 games not to be capped he must not have been very good simple as that Brown was a great club player and worse players than him were capped however in his time he was well down the list of centre backs and even further down the list of midfielders he was unlucky Russell was a decent player but simply not as good as others at that time It is all about timing hence Maurice Ross Kirk Broadfoot Steven Hughes and Colin Jackson were all capped

Scottish football has never recovered from the pathetic Roxburgh/Broon years although if you listen to them you would think they’re Guardiola/Mourinho.

Oh aye I forgot to add him also.

What a joke our national squad was.

The fact Charlie Adam never had a call up since 2015 is laughable also.

McKinley would have been forgiven if the black eye he gave Larsson would have saw him moved on. But, anyone else remember when he wasnt that good?

This was a personal thing between him and Craig Brown. Robertson was a fantastic left back who spoke his mind and Boyd was average but was a yes man and toed the line Brown was a schoolteacher who treated the players like kids
Yeah I’m aware, I’m sure Brown referred to one of the teachers pets as a “left back specialist” or something. Think a poster above has corrected me on what he actually said.

Adam was easily the best technical player round about 2012-2016, the fact he didn’t run around chasing crisp packets hampered him.

Not accepting that about Bomber Jackson, sorry! Extremely underrated player.

Roxburgh and Brown’s thought process concerning John Brown is beyond laughable.
In the 92-93 season during our “fairly decent” run in Europe, our top centre back pairing was Gough and Brown.
McPherson was shunted to right back to accommodate this.
Robertson was outstanding at left back.
For reasons I’ve always found impossible to guess before trying to work out, the Scotland management team refused to consider Brown as good enough, choosing Smith’s second choice, McPherson, as the other centre back.
Totally ignoring Robertson.
Including Goram, this was the core back five that had progressed so well in Europe.
Yet, the super duper Roxburgh/Brown partnership inexplicably ignored this.

Maybe the Costa Ricans or a Portuguese taxi driver had advised them ?.

Not exactly on topic but John McGovern captained the Nottingham Forrest team that won a league and 2 ECs.
For us Russel and Brown are the obvious ones. The whole rotation thing between Goram and Leighton was a sham too. Cost Scotland at the 92 Euros.

Neither Gordon Smith nor Alex Miller were capped at full international level.

This is something I struggle to get my head around. They were playing before my time but through lockdown especially I've been watching re-runs of the Scotland games and our old games and I can't understand it.

Im not saying they should have played every game or that there wasn't other options but along with Bomber, Gough and The Goalie you could have had 4 of your back 5 from the team dominating the domestic game.

From what I've seen Fergie was unlucky he was up against Gary Mac, Stuart McCall and John Collins but was there other options outside of them?

Browns last straw with Scotland was when he was in the squad for a 5-0 drubbing by Portugal. He was annoyed our defence was evidently rotten and Roxburgh still didn’t trust him. Told them to ram it after that.

Fergie also had McLeod and Mcstay to contend with before the saviour Craig Burley came along . I think he may have been injured on occasion also (don’t quote me). Still scandalous he only got 9 caps.

Interesting about Bomber, I didn't know that. Did Gough not also have a similar issue with the school teacher mentality? I can remember reading something about Craig Brown being more fussed about boot colour and sock tape than the game.

Yeah Bomber phoned his house one time and Roxburgh’s wife said “ what paper are you from ?”. That also annoyed him.

I’m not sure RE Gough, was before my time but I’ve not read anything. I’m sure someone will educate us :)

I think Roxburgh had Brown go about with a felt tip colouring in the tape to match the socks (it’s a rule now , not sure if it was back then).
