Unusual Rivalries/Grudge Matches in Football

The Brighton Palace one is nicknamed the M23 derby, which is bizarre as the M23 doesn’t join either of them.

Think it goes back to a manager feud involving Alan Mullery
Always thought it went back to mods vs. rockers in the 60s.

Sheff utd and west ham think its over the signing of tevez and mascherano was proved to be dodgy and tevez kept west ham up and caused sheff utd to go down on the last day

That's pretty much why, yes.

More recently we're not too fond of Wrexham after the FA Cup ties a couple of years back, mind you not many clubs are!

Aberdeen would be the obvious one. Can never quite understand why Man Utd V Leeds is so passionate. Even when Leeds were down the divisions there was proper animosity and hatred between the clubs when they met.
Lancashire/Yorkshire is it not?

Northampton v P'boro is a keen rivalry although 35/40 miles apart.

When I was a youngster Larkhall Thislte v St Rochs was a rough one.

Arsenal and Stoke seemed to be brewing to a genuine level of dislike between fans/clubs. All stemmed from Tony Pulis hating the type of football Wenger played so he had the players fired up, which may have then lead to the Shawcross tackle on Ramsey. Stoke fans would then boo Ramsey for some inexplicable reason.

Given everyone from that time has moved on, and they haven't played for a few years, I doubt it would be the same level if they played now.
Any excuse to post this

The Liverpool Manchester rivalry goes back to the 1800's when to avoid duties paid on goods, the Manchester ship canal was built.
This also may be the reason the Leeds Liverpool canal was built, and that was to avoid Manchester.
I suppose these rivalries just carried on when the football teams came about.

Celtic and most teams they face in Europe once the Green Brigade have Googled the political leanings of their opposition's ultras group immediately after the draw. Either that or because Celtic lost fairly to them in the 1970s.

Rivalries somehow include Lazio, Rapid Vienna, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Neymar. All of them one way of course.

War of the roses. Lancashire v Yorkshire.
In the early 70's i used to hitch hike to Haydock then go to Liverpool or Manchester to watch games mainly Liverpool. When the Lanc teams wore patches with red roses and Leeds had the same patch apart it was white

Australia and Syria - https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/syrian-fans-take-protests-online-475189

After they lost to Australia in world cup qualifiers they spammed this online anywhere they could find for months on end

"We demand an investigation into the replacement of referee Rafshan Irmatov and his departure at a difficult time in such an important match.
We ask for an examination of the grassland that was not suitable for the Syrian team, while Australian players seem to be wearing shoes that cling to the long grass, so we saw Syrian players fall during the game, while Australia's players are steady.
FIFA should propose an investigation into the replacement of referee Rafsan Irmatov and his departure at a difficult time of such an important match. !!!! The judgment is not fair enough
We ask for an examination of the grassland which was not suitable for the Syrian team and doubts that the Australian players are wearing shoes clinging to the long grass, so we saw Syrian players falling during the game, while the players of Australia steadfast.
If that proves to be the case, the result of the match must be canceled and Australia is legally lost under the international law of FIFA 3/0 and thus becomes a qualification for the Syrian national football team."

St Mirren v Morton, seems way more a clash than it should be.
Regarding the St.Mirren and Morton, here is a breakdown.

Football first came to Renfrewshire in the early 1870s, with teams like Thornliebank, Arthurlie, Barrhead and Renfrew. It was not until 1877 that the first team emerged in Paisley, when St.Mirren decided to switch codes from rugby to football. They were closely followed at the end of 1877 by rivals in the shape of Abercorn.

Over the years that followed, The Saints and The Abbies, as they were now being called, formed a strong rivalry in the town. Over this period, teams began to slip away from the senior ranks, and the Saints and Abbies were now two of the only three senior teams left in Renfrewshire.

Following the untimely demise of the Abbies in 1920, Greenock Morton were left as Saints closest rivals and since then this rivalry has intensified and is one of the most hard-fought derby fixtures in Scottish Football. In the early days of Scottish Football County Cup Competitions were common, and were regarded as second only to the Scottish Cup in importance. Renfrewshire had a strong competition with as many as thirty teams competing each season, but with the demise of so many clubs this competition has lost much of its appeal.

Charity Cups were also contested, and the Paisley Charity Cup was introduced in 1882-83 and was played each year until 1967. The names of St.Mirren and Morton are emblazoned on these trophies more than any other teams, proving their dominance in Renfrewshire.

In 2001, Greenock Morton were in financial trouble and St.Mirren stepped in to arrange a challenge match with all proceeds going to the Cappielow club. This was not the first act of kindness towards their rivals by the Saints, as back in season 1908-09, when Abercorn were having similar troubles, a match was organised by St.Mirren and all proceeds went to the Abbies. Unfortunately this only prolonged their demise.

As a true gesture of charity it is interesting to note that Saints won neither of these matches against lesser teams, drawing 0-0 with Abercorn and losing 2-1 to Morton!

This rivalry continues to this day, although not as bad as in 1970s -80s. When games were played at Cappielow, home supporters used to run behind the park and up carwood st to Ratho street. From here morton fans used to through bricks over the wall and down to station platform where st.mirren fans stood. This was the days of football specials, even the trains windows were getting panned.

See when I used to play Trivial Pursuit. Geography (the blue triangle if I remember correctly) was my weakest suit.

However, it's trying to get my head around those 20 Montrose fans singing; ' Get intae thae smokie b@stards, ken'

It's like my old report cards.

Young pitboots, lacks imagination.

I used to work besude people from that area and Arbroath v Montrose is a genuine grudge match. Similarly, East Fife v Rauth Rovers. Absolutely no love lost there either.

I'd imagine there would be a rivalry of sorts between all four Fife clubs.

The Arbroath v Montrose one, I was not aware of.

Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock mainly in the heads of some older Thistle fans .

The song goes : Singing I'm no a Killie, I'm a jag , singing I’m no a Killie I’m a jag , singing I’m no a Killie , I’m no so fuckin silly, I'm no a Killie, I'm a Jag.

Weird.

Do Millwall not just hate everybody?
On a group I am on there is regularly claims by Everton fans of taking a mob to the Den and chasing Millwall however Millwall claim that none of their lads where about as it was totally unexpected that Everton would bring a mob to the Den and when word got round there had been trouble and Millwall mustered a mob Everton soon scarpered I think this is the root of bad blood between the two.
