US indictment published tonight says in black and white FIFA execs were paid bribes to vote for Russia and Qatar World Cups.

Jack Warner’s name always comes up

I can't even pretend to be shocked at that one but ultimately what can the authorities do?
The DOJ can do a hell of a lot. Extraditions hopefully. And FIFA as an organisation won't escape unharmed side they have offices in America.

They don't %^*& around, billion dollar budgets, huge powers, best of talent unlike our serious(?) fraud office who haven't jailed a banker yet for the crash.

They're not going to take on any Russians or anyone from Qatar are they, it'll be a few individuals at best.

They jailed one guy and they caused the crash more than we did. Watch The Big Short an incredible but worrying film

Just confirms what we all know don’t think there will be justice ever for all that lost life’s building the stadiums.
on that note was there last month amazing city stadiums look pretty cool.

Fifa is rotten to the core and uefa is not much better. Sadly, I don't see what can be done about it.
The only way to change it, in my opinion, is if the football associations of the major players, England, Germany, Spain, etc break away from fifa.
The first thing the English fa should have done when these world cups were awarded is withdraw from Fifa competitions. Hit them in the pocket, it's all they know.

Started with de Havelange who took over FIFA with an empty biscuit tin. Then Sepp Blatter continued the corruption. There is a book about the corruption of de Havelange. It also mentions a mysterious person pulling de Havelange's strings in the background. He was never caught but the book suggests strongly that it was Sepp Blatter I think de Havelange did a prison sentence for corruption.

Something I think everyone suspected from the start. Both FIFA AND UEFA need a thorough cleansing from top to bottom
Agreed. Only confirms what everyone already knew. The whole Qatar thing was just blatant though. Theres no way in the interests of football should they have got it. It was obviously in the interests of a few bank balances, that decisions were made for it to go to there.

Quite sad there are people on this thread claiming Russia deserved the world cup, one of the worst country's in the world for racism and homophobia, awarded the biggest football tournament in the world by an organisation who claim to be against all forms of the above. More or less rewarding Russia for racist and homophobic behaviour.

No one will be in the least bit surprised. And nor will we be surprised that it won’t make a blind bit of difference to FIFA. Corrupt to the core.

What's your view on the USA/Mexico joint hosting it with Canada for 2026?

Soon as the both were announced i burst out laughing and said ' i wonder how they managed that'. My thoughts were true. :p

Football must be the most corrupt sport on the planet.

We all know it yet continually turn a Nelson’s while these fat cat båstards are milking the system for billions.

I really hate football sometimes.

It has been a form of money laundering since Abramovic. There’s a reason the yanks started investigating a few years ago.

100% this except for don't watch the film, read the book which is a far better account
They did jail a few very low level guys who had taken out multiple sub prime mortgages but as usual the big guys atop the institutions that actually created and made fortunes on dodgy financial instruments and gross misrepresentation carry on with their country club lifestyle

How Fifa have been able to effectively take over a sport and control when, how and where its played whilst simultaneously siphoning billions of pounds from it is a disgrace. Our national game, first played and organised on these Isles, and the running of it is held hostage by a corrupt little clique in mainland Europe. Countries should tell them where to go but they hold all the power which was willingly surrendered to them generations ago.

...and if anyone is naive enough to think that corruption is only at the very top level of football (ie. FIFA or the World Cup) then they’re extremely delusional.

Football is corrupt to the core and absolutely no one cares about us as fans, and no one actually cares about sporting integrity. Any decision taken is all for personal gain; financially or otherwise.

The World Cup in Qatar is an absolute farce, having to shift the football calender just to accommodate it, just so a few already rich people can get richer.

FIFA are utterly and totally corrupt, the would willingly pay for the pleasure of selling themselves, scum.

Like so much in life, we just pretend it doesn't happen.

Tim Vickery puts it very well. Sir Stanley Rous didn't kick apartheid South Africa out of football, the colonies (sic) thought this rather indicitive of his attitude towards them. Havelange then went round the whole football constituency, promising money and influence for the 'little guy' and when he toppled the ancien regime he consistently came through for all of the Jack Warners in Uzbekistan, Panama, Guinea etc etc. thus ensuring the old world would never have control again, unless they played his version of the filthy corrupt game. The Home Nations fell asleep at the wheel over a genration ago and will never get it back.

FIFA, when awarding tournaments ensure that host nations pass legislation making sure FIFA and the money the tournament generates are outwith the legislative bounds of the host state, making FIFA basically a supra-national. extra-judicial organisation that has the budget and power of a state yet is not subject to international law, a situation their hosts in Switzerland turn a blind eye to, probably because of the amount of gold under the building in Zurich.

Football at an elite level is truly the whore of the world.
