Victims lawyer urges Celtic to set millions aside

Gerry McCann has been very successful in his career. In Glasgow his area of expertise was physiology and sports science. He worked in the Western Infirmary as a doctor and also lectured. I think Celtic would have employed him as a consultant when they needed his services.
He went into Cardiology after moving to Leicester, and he is now a professor of cardiac imaging.
No denying Gerry is a very clever and successful man. A lot of us might think you'd have to be to get away with it.

I worked in the Western from 1996 - 2015 ...... the vibe I got from staff who knew McCann was that he was a pompous arrogant prick and not very well liked by his colleagues .

There is a documentary in the process of being made and researched over the last few years with all that has happened at that club and Crewe and a couple other clubs down south.

It’s still a while away but been told it will be the scum at the front and centre with all their predators and will connect the dots, and Bennell at Crewe had links at the scum.

It is NOT Mark Daly’s either and will be broadcast nationally when finished and will wait till Torbetts appeal heard and McCafferty trial is finished,I seen with my own eye’s who was researching it at court,as the folk where sitting at the last couple trials of Torbett and Cairney.

Not before time

They might be able to argue that they are technically a new and different club than the Celtic football and athletic club of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s maybe a Nhewco club,So the old club and their bhoys club were a separate entity it would save them money but lose them trophies and history.

SURVIVORS have accused the Scottish Government of “becoming complicit in the cover-up of abuse” as a row over the remit of the inquiry into the historical child abuse intensifies.

And so they should accuse them. Appalling that the SNP actually thought this was the way to go. They should hang their heads in shame, caring more about protecting votes.

Child abuse survivors: Holyrood is now complicit in the cover-up

SURVIVORS have accused the Scottish Government of “becoming complicit in the cover-up of abuse” as a row over the remit of the inquiry into the historical child abuse intensifies.
In an angry email to Education Secretary Angela Constance, Alan Draper, parliamentary liaison officer for In Care Abuse Survivors, claimed many institutions would escape public scrutiny if the Government did not include non-residential settings such as church parishes, schools and children’s and youth organisations within the inquiry’s scope.

“When we made our submission to Government we asked that the inquiry should cover all organisations and institutions which had a duty of care for young people. Your Government, however, limited the remit primarily to residential institutions,” he wrote in his email sent on Monday night.

“This decision resulted in many victims, who had suffered grievous abuse, being excluded from the inquiry. We are of the view that this decision has enabled institutions and organisations, who have covered up criminal activity, to escape public scrutiny, and possible prosecution. The failure to extend the remit of the inquiry has effectively resulted in the Government becoming complicit in a cover-up of abuse.”

Draper's intervention comes a week after it emerged court action is being threatened to force the Government to widen the inquiry. Another survivors' group, White Flowers Alba, said it was seeking a judicial review because the inquiry will not look at all cases it was concerned about.
It also wants the inquiry to extend its examination of abuse to include incidents involving priests in local parishes, in day schools such as council nurseries or primaries, and in movements such as Scouts or Army cadets.

Draper raised concerns in his email about whether any extra funding would be given to Police Scotland to take on possible historical abuse cases referred to them by the inquiry.
He also hit out over what he claimed was the Government’s failure to properly address the issue of compensation payments.

“At meetings with officials about redress, it became clear that they had instructions to shut down any discussions about compensation or interim payments for sick and elderly survivors. This has caused considerable distress amongst survivors as they feel that they had been failed yet again by the establishment,” he wrote. “Instead, the Government offered victims a support scheme; whilst having some positives, it did not meet the aspirations, or reasonable expectations of survivors.

“What survivors want is for the damage to be repaired, for ongoing support to be put in place, and for reasonable compensation, not just for the damage caused but for the lost opportunities.”
The inquiry formally began on October 1 with chair Susan O’Brien QC calling for those who believe they have information to share to make initial contact. A spokeswoman said at the time the inquiry would “focus on an explicit remit within a set timeframe”.

Constance said consultations were also completed on plans to lift the three-year time bar for civil action in cases of historical child abuse since September 1964.

The inquiry, which could take up to four years and is Scotland’s biggest public inquiry to date, will cover allegations of abuse of children in formal institutional care including faith-based organisations, children’s homes and secure care as well as those in foster care, long-term hospital care and boarding schools.

It covers the period “within living memory’’ up to December 17 last year and will have the power to compel witnesses to attend and give evidence.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “This is one of the most wide-ranging public inquiries Scotland has ever seen and part of a range of measures we are taking to support survivors of abuse. The initial call was for an inquiry into the abuse of children in institutional care. We have listened carefully to survivors of abuse and responded to their request for the scope to be widened. There are a wide range of survivors with differing views but many told us they did not want a scope that was so wide that it would never report in a reasonable timescale."

Slightly off topic. But for anyone regularly following this thread got a view on attending the Saville dome for next week's game?

Had a chance for a ticket but immediately turned it down as I don't see how going to their ground would fit with the sheer disgust at what they represent and are doing to victims.

Why as a group of fans would we go there knowing what they have done? I really can't see how the two work together?

Surely anyone vocal on here or Twitter or petitions surely then wouldn't attend their ground?

#stripthetitles

Na, let them keep them mate. When more people (outwith Scotland) in the future find out about them which may happen, they may become know as that club with tainted titles and/or that club with a history of paedophilia ..a win win. Look at Penn State.

I was talking about youth football in work, my workmate said he played against Celtc boys club with Peter Grant and a few others who went on to be Celtc reserves. There's no way they can wriggle out of this.
If the lawyers find the payments from Celtc to the various nonces then bingo! We should also forget about the Scottish Government report, it's been a sham from the start (I'm quite sure a few professional people have quit overlooking it due to interference)

That's a great idea!

Put Celtic and the cover up that continues to take place under the spotlight.

It would make life incredibly difficult for Celtic and the SNP if we could unite and pull this off.

It would make national news and help expose the lengths Celtic and the SNP are going to in an attempt to keep this hush-hush!

After the latest procurator fiscal fiasco, does anyone actually have any confidence of the courts dealing with this properly? Gerald King got community service for multiple cases of abuse. Torbett got 3 years for multiple cases of abuse and a repeat offender. Why does anyon have any confidence that this will be dealt with properly?

Every one of them that gets found guilty and sent to jail is another nail in Celtic's coffin.

Hence why their doing their utmost to delay the McCafferty trial.

They're hoping and praying the old bastard dies before he takes the stand and blows their separate entity stance clean out of the water.

I played against their boys club at Barrowfield. Under 14s I think. We were told that their 1st team trained there

Just what I was thinking there.

Did C R Smith have a sponsorship deal with the boys club?

If not, while it doesn’t blow the whole separate entity lie apart, it certainly shows it’s built on shifting sand.

It would be interesting to see what the contract between CR Smith and Celtic says. In fact, was it not identical as CR Smith - Rangers? Or maybe it was just one contract between the 3 parties, in which case, someone Rangers-minded may have access to it.

I've said that for years, personally I think he was a victim.
His conduct certainly points in that direction all day long!
I concur.

I believe he was terrified his name would come out as a victim, ergo backing Cairney so he wouldn`t get arrested.

Burns strikes me as a victim so embarrassed by what happened to him as a boy that he just wanted to keep it quiet. That in a way is understandable when you think about it.
I reckon that's what makes paedophiles do what they do. Jock Stein certainly aided them by not contacting the police about it, he was only concerned about how those boys developed as footballers and have his pick of the best of them. Disgusting!
The whole club was rotten to the core and deserve whats coming their way.

Jock probably wanted to do it but the RC church stopped that also!

To me it was all about the brand and keeping away from any embarassing scandal by whatever skullduggery necessary

"The name of Celtic must be kept clean at all times" - Jock Stein

Damning words from bawface himself

A full admission of guilt and complicity,
Criminal convicions for those who covered it up for decades,
A full apology to all victims and their families,
Appropriate sanctions from the SFA and the SPFL (using the Penn State case as a template),
Punitive financial compensation to all victims and their families (again, using the Penn State case as a template).

But, in reality, if any one of those things ever come to pass, I’ll be amazed.
None of them will come to pass mate, that'll be a given.

Me too.
The rest of your post is just a Utopian dream.

Does this mean the press/radio phone ins can start talking about it now??

I mean they have only been silent on the matter because the appeal was in....that the reason wasn’t it.....wasn’t it??
Not yet McCafferty trial is still to start

"The name of Celtic must not be associated with child abuse. We'll lose millions in sponsorship deals." - Celtic insider.

Alex Thomson Channel Four take note - this is the biggest sex abuse and cheating scandal in British sport.

Cheating on an industrial scale.

There is nothing stopping discussion of Torbett and Cairney. Their trials are over, and they have been sentenced. Torbett has been refused the right to appeal.
However, Scotland doesn't like to talk about abuse, particularly if it involves Celtic. The media, phone ins, bloggers, they all want to protect Celtic's "good name".

If the scum were to settle out of court with the victims does this constitute an admission of Guilt and if so does this mean by doing so they the club would be liable to prosecution by law and the footballing authorities both here and at Uefa, hope that made sense.

Yes

Admitting liability will leave them open to all sorts
How SeperateEntity FC continue to deny liability for their own boys club is simply abhorrent
