for me it was special as it was my first euro trip and in home end opposite the Rangers section

any memories ?

Great fun in Benidorm. Ex owner of Ibrox Bar had tons of buses going up on matchday, turned up, no buses !
Mental in Villarreal and stadium, Bears created an electric atmosphere, they were everywhere.
As usual the Spanish Police were psycho thugs.
Boyd's missed chance...

Never made the last game and was going to go over with my boy to this one and stay in Benidorm for a couple of nights but after reading the stories especially about the police ah don’t want to take him.

In a hire car convoy to Castellon & getting totally lost in the mountains. not sure where we thought the sea was!!

Getting Carry Out taken off us in the square in Villarreal and getting it back 1 can at a time.

Being in the shitty cul-de-sac whilst waiting to get in (get in early Bears)

Their tannoy playing Simply The Best & us getting in shit for singing along.

The feeling of what if!!!!

Sat at work watching the draw and looking to book flights quick smart...

Old boy who sat across from me frequented Spain quite a lot so I asked him what was the best airport to fly to for Villarreal....."Murcia" was his suggestion.

So flights booked to Murcia (via Dublin ).

Had to arrange a driver for 7 of us from Murcia to our digs in Valencia. 3 hour drive and was probably the best part of the trip. The driver arrived with a cool box rammed with cold beer and was happy to put on our cultural CDs :D

in the home end with my uncle with my full strip on, wee spanish woman beside me putting me under her blanket with her to keep me warm lol, singing when the team came out to get strange looks from the villarreal fans, seeds lying on the floor all over the stadium, wee fat baldy guy in rangers end coming up to the perspex and flashing himself at everyone, was a horrible sight... and boyds miss :(

Total shambles getting into the ground..
Thinking Boyd was going to score...
Good couple of days in Valencia..

I saw there doing buses also ????

Wasn't there, just too young unfortunately. Remember the game very well and thinking we were going to do it when Lovenkrands scored. So proud of the Bears that night. Also remember Arsenal playing them in the semi final and taking 2 thousand and thinking it wasnt fair after the way our fans travelled!

Boyd was only used as a sub.

Had he been on from the start, I am sure he would have scored, and we would have gone through.

Armed police escorting us off the train from Barca was just the start of the adventure.
300 Euro taxi's the rest of the way
Serious lack of boozers from memory
1 Euro beers at the 'cafe' stands in the wee square
5 asides in the square
Riot Cops and one wanker copper wanting to wade into everyone
Riot Vans surrounding the square in the afternoon
Purchasing tickets of a random guy on a date with his bird
Arriving late for kick off and missing the goal

My brothers first trip away :D

We were in the official Rangers end, day trip with the travel club.

Doubt I could manage a day trip every again. Full day of boozing in Valencia, then onto Villareal. For some reason, maybe the booze, forgot to get any dinner and I was absolutely done in after the game.

Will never forget the sight of the Bears taking over the stadium. It was unreal. If I recall, Arsenal got them in the next/later round and didn't even sell their allocation.

Edit: Think wee arrived at the stadium just after the police were taking their anger out on everyone, managed to get into the stadium without any problems.

Correct.

Riots in Benidorm and the horrible Spanish cops. Seen one auld boy take a leathering.
Bedlam with the Coppers again in Villareal, the bus window being smashed and thinking we're gonna get done for that.
The game being a disappointment after convincing myself we were going through.

Careful with the Coppers, they are truly scum in Spain, I've witnessed it every time we've been and also with Chelsea, they haven't changed one bit.

I remember the criticism of Boyd being a bit over the top.

Unless I’m losing my shit, it was a harder chance than many thought.

Watched it with a few mates in the house having a few beers and one of them was eating a donner kebab with korma sauce.

good good mate, well wish them all the best , be a great trip

Hopefully I’ll get to the ground this time. Last time we made the decision to just stay in Benidorm, the coppers had been going mental the night before and the story was that they were going to turn buses away if folk had no tickets. We just stayed in Benidorm to make sure we at least got to see the game.

Being on a skiing holiday in the Italian Alps that week so having to do planes, trains and automobiles (literally!) to get to Spain for the match.
The horrendous crush trying to get into the ground. That alleyway was a death trap.
Oh and Boyd's miss

Ferguson getting his revenge from the first leg and bossing Riquelme.

Rangers dominating the first half hour.

Boyd’s miss.

Spanish police thugs (won’t be going this time)

It was a good chance, but we have missed a lot easier chances. It just went with the narrative that he didnt do it enough in big games which was kind of true. They were a very good side and it was no shame to be put out by them.

Only Euro away game I went to Nd never managed to source a ticket. Problem was we were told the night before by our contact it was all sorted only for the boy to go awol and 30 minutes before ko he confirmed tickets fell through.

Watched it in a bar across from the stadium and just because of the timings etc, never seen one bit of trouble.

Body’s miss was one I could face watching for quite awhile afterwards and looking back he really should have done better. Example of the occasion getting to him as any SPL game, he was burying that!

Bus from Benidorm being good with the usual sing songs, police being cunts again and Boyd missing that chance which now I don't think was as easy as we thought it was

Aye, getting crushed against a wall by a polis horse.
I still have my complete ticket somewhere owing to the fact that I was taken into the ground by medics.

Remember the police being extra handy with the truncheons at the turnstiles- skelping every other person going in and through the turnstiles

Riqueleme & Forlan were far better players than I gave them credit for.

The latter in particular was just an awesome awesome footballer.

Special for me as it was the day my son was born (2nd child, 1st son - since added another boy)
Missed the match .... but one of the few occassions I can say that I wasnt bothered missing it.

Aye,Arsenal had about 150 in that wee cheese wedge section,we had about 12,000 all over the stadium..:)

Went on the official travel club day trip. They ran two flights that day, somehow ended up on a different flight from my mates, so ended up on my own. got chatting with 2 bears on the flight so spent the day drinking with them in Valencia.

Was well gone when we got to Villareal, sure we got there about an hour before ko, can remember getting off the bus and just hearing bears singing from every angle, the support we had over there was magnificent! A honestly think people are underestimating when they say there was 10k, I honestly thought there was much more than that.

Game itself was a bit of a gutter after going ahead then eventually getting put out.

That Villarreal team was phenomenal for their stature and revenue levels when you look back at it:

Villarreal: Viera, Javi Venta (Hector Font 46), Rodriguez, Pena, Arruabarrena, Senna, Tacchinardi, Josico, Riquelme (Calleja 85), Forlan, Jose Mari (Franco 45).
Subs Not Used: Barbosa, Guayre, Quique Alvarez, Alcantara.

I totally forgot that Tacchinardi was on loan there from Juventus.

Think they put Inter out in the quarters.

Me and my mates stayed in Valencia for 3 nights, the day before the game we got a taxi through to the villareal training ground (ticket centre was here at the time) and bought tickets of locals for €100 a pop.
We spent most the time drinking in an Irish bar at a wee square in Valencia.

Boyds sitter haunts me to this day!

I remember the roar when the rangers team came out to warm up, we were all over the place (maybe over 10,000 bears?) unbelievable!

I was there with Travel Club daytrip, day in Valencia was fine but once we were bussed to Villareal it was hell.
After experiencing that and the same treatment at Pamplona/Osasuna at the hands of the Guarda Civil I Wouldn’t return to Spain for an away game

Me and 2 mates planned to go, but our flight from Birmingham to Madrid was delayed so we didn't have time to get there, we would have ended up being on a train during the game. Instead we watched it in a bar in Madrid, the only TV that had it on was a tiny one above the bar and we were the only 3 watching the game, the rest of the people in the bar were watching Barcelona and Chelsea I think in huge screens everywhere.

When we scored we went nuts and it was one of these moments when we calmed down and noticed that everyone had stopped what they were doing and giving us a strange look:D

Weird night, mate hadn't had his nat king for yonks so we got a taxi driver to take us to a brothel after it, I ended up in the bar chatting to a hooker who was wearing nothing but a thong while he was a away in the back pumping another one.
