Pretty standard practice.
This guy is brilliant, but anyone can keep their place if they play well. Keeps everyone motivated to play at their best level.
I'm sure if a young, up and coming, player came into our team and performed to a very high standard, he would be kept in the team when the regular starter returned. Or not.
