Who is our best outfield player?

Was talking to my mate about last nights game and he asked me that question after his rant about how shit he thought the vast majority of our players were.

It’s actually quite a hard question to answer and I thought Tav because he is probably out most consistent performer but we don’t really have anyone that puts together five 8/10 performances back to back.

If Cantwell was on it and 100% focused on the team and not himself, then him by a country mile.

But seeing as that scenario would now look like fantasy....

Tav, Lunny or Goldson?

Raskin is similar to Cantwell, had a few games where he has been different class, levels above. But nothing consistent so hardly warrants a mention.

Cantwell looked to have been but but he he has regressed horribly so it remains Tav despite a poor season (He is still streets above the rest).

We have a very poor collection of players especially in midfield.

Think its a shame we have to name defenders instead of midfielders or forwards, but yes, Tav, and i’ll prob get shot down for this, Borna. He’s the best left back in Scottish football. And before you all get excited, im very critical of him, but under PC he looks rejuvinated.

All the 'Tav' replies are an indication of how far we have fallen. There is a new mindset amongst our supporters that second and mediocrity is ok. I find that hard to accept.
I don’t think it’s the supporters mindset. I also said Tav and caveated that by saying I’d sell him if I could! That’s genuinely how bad we are. Our current 3 best players wouldn’t even be in the team if we had the quality the money we have spent should have given us.

In terms of fitness, Lundstram could probably hold his own at any level in the EPL. But his actual all-round game is probably 15th to 20th place.

Cantwell has dominated Bruno Fernandes before and given Ozil a chasing as well. Likewise McGregor in an Old Firm. But looks miles off it just now and nobody wanted him even when he was available on the cheap.

Tav is Tav but not proven at any level domestically.

Was going to say Raskin but he's not really done anything at senior level when you think about it.

Not great.

Roofe would probably be our best player if he could stay for.

He is easily good enough to start for a mid table EPL club if fit. At the likes of Crystal Palace or Fulham.

His fitness issues are why he plays for us an not an EPL team. If he could stay fully fit we wouldn't be able to afford him.

Not many of our first team outfield players would stand a chance of being a regular starter for many EPL clubs.

Lundstram would be another one who would probably start for a mid table EPL team.

Aye. It wasnae too disimilar in the early 80's but ah sense a real deflation and its the transfer window and Beales shocking lack of judgement blowin it thats ta blame. Yous tell me when was the last time we had 15 million ta spend. Are any of the attacking options better than Lawrence or Kemar when he's playing? Ah dont wannae talk about Alfredo goin on a freebie but its take its toll.

I still hold hopes that Ianis can fulfill his potential and remain injury free. At one stage he looked a 30 million pound player

It's Cantwell played in the 10 role.
The manager and the fans that don't want to criticise the manager are the only folk that will say otherwise

Good point mate but many love Tav and elevate him to a status I don't think he has earned or deserves. It seems that many supporters brought up during the dark period of the last few years are ok with the odd cup and win against the bheast. For me Tav is much like Lammers, Dessers, Barasic, Yilmaz, Dowell, Wright, etc. Not good enough and not fit to wear the shirt and defend the badge.

Are you a potato eater?

I don't want to speak for him, but he clearly did as well as adding his own, correct point.

No he didn't. Whys he talking about people saying Tav means that we accept mediocrity?

Just because people think Tav is the best player we have doesn't mean that anyone thinks that he is good, bad or indifferent. Just that he is the best we currently have in their opinion.

Because a good % do.

Agreed. I don't think anybody was disagreeing with that part.

Overall it’s Cantwell and it’s not even close.
Form wise it’d be gun to head stuff. If there’s a player that clearly stands out for you on current form then I feel sorry for you.

At which point was that? Genuinely interested as I can’t recall it And I think I’ve been generally pro Hagi over the years.

he’s been good at times but never a standout player imo.
Ah see yer point. You'll excuse me pal Im 67. There was a european game during steven gerrards reign..Haji just showed it all...long roaming passes...box to box...defended...eas involved in a goal...it was just a gut feeling this kids going places headed to the EPL..

Probably Tav tbh.

His numbers can't be disputed, he's very rarely injured, always shows for the ball and never hides.

Would loved to have seen him in Advocaats team, him and Numan bombing forward would have been brilliant to watch.

Plus he's our highest rated player in EAFC :p

Ability wise I’d say Cantwell or Lawrence. Both have the ability to devastate games but neither have the body or mentality to realise their own potential.

Up until this season I would have said Kent was the best of the previous group but recruitment is where every current problem stems from and where all solutions will be found. 2/3 need to be found in January.

It's Tav, prob followed by Goldson. Two players who get criticism, that is deserved at times, easy target at others. They have served us well, but history will be kinder to them than the current situation. Tav especially will be spoken about for years based on his stats alone.

The best footballer on our books is Hagi.

As for the best footballer in the current squad, it’s a tough question. Probably Raskin when he’s at his best but as with most of this group, that’s few and far between.

I agree we have as a fanbase accepted mediocrity. Tav does has his moments and his penalty rate is excellent. However he has presided over so many dreadful results and has captained us to only 2 trophies in his almost ten years here. That’s a shocking return from a captain. He, along with Goldson, Borna, Lundstram and Jack really need to go if we are ever going to be successful. But our last transfer window means we have to keep them on as the other players we have are even worse. Not an easy way out of this and will take years to get over the damage done by Beale and Wilson.

Lundstrum this season followed by Goldson, Tav and Barisic. As for Cantwell has plenty talent but his application is poor and won't last long unless he changes his attitude.

Butland, Lundstrum ,Danilo and McAusland are the only ones I'd keep the others can go in the next 2-4 windows if we are serious about being winners.
