As those of an older vintage will be well aware, Rangers have an incredible history going all the way back to our inception in March 1872, and on a managerial front we can easily make our own claims to fame on having a few of the potentially best managers in the game when we look at club records and individual trophy hauls.
Moving on from stellar performances in the dug out and the dressing room, Rangers have also had an incredible array of players represent us on the pitch down the years and whilst it is incredibly likely that many, many fans would ultimately select a very similar top ten best player shortlist, it would absolutely be almost impossible for anyone to just select a single talent from the plethora of options that we have available to us.
Individual fans would definitely have their favourites though and many would be torn between those players who basically spent their entire playing career with us, and then those who simply shone brightly in far shorter spells in Govan yet still more than played their way into our hearts and minds. And whilst talking of hearts, minds and other body parts, there is always the Eye of Horus slot to check out in-between Rangers discussions and matches.
High on anyone’s top ten list would be a certain Ally McCoist, as he had an incredible career with us across his 15 year spell in Glasgow and his goal scoring exploits down those years speaks for itself. McCoist, of course, also went one further and spent his own spell in charge of the team as manager.
I would hazard a guess that the vast majority would also include the likes of Goram, Ian Durrant, Barry Ferguson, Richard Gough and Brian Laudrup in their lists as they are players who have represented us far more recently in our history and many fans would have simply seen them play in person, so they would be fresher in the mind, and the likes of Jorg Albertz, Davie Cooper and John Greig would also fall into that category albeit we are beginning to dip into the 1960’s there.
Greig is worthy of a special mention here as he is truly iconic at Rangers as a one club man throughout his career, and he made a monumental 755 appearances in our colours, scoring 120 times. Known for his leadership both on and off the pitch, he more than played his part in a number of successful squads that lifted numerous league titles and domestic cups. He also served as our skipper and the relentless, no-nonsense defender, led the side to the 1972 European Cup Winner’s Cup in a 3-2 victory over Dynamo Moscow over in Barcelona.
For those fans of my age though, one of the first names to come to mind would be Brian Laudrup. The 82 capped Denmark international weirdly had a bit of a nomad career as he moved on regularly, but he found a home at Ibrox and in a four year spell he made well over 100 appearances, scoring 33 goals and in amongst many memorable performances the 1996 Scottish Cup final was a clear stand out as he scored a brace and assisted three more goals.
But who would feature at the top of your lists?
