Improving the Squad (Player Suggestions)

Agree. I wrote down our midfielders today & counted 11, incl guys out / in on loan. There are 4 or 5 that probably won’t cut it for different reasons, so maybe we let Them go & bring in 2 / 3?quality guys ? The wages might balance out.
Yeah we do have alot of wage thiefs we still have to get off the bills.
I'd expect Defoe to go back to Bournemouth in summer.
We have to balance the books a bit aswell.
Hopefully we can get big money for our assets like Morelos for £19m and Tav for £5m.
thats £24m give £9m or £10m to Gerrard and Allen. The rest goes to balancing the books.

Yes, if we sold them for 20m combined Id guess Gerrard might see 12m maximum ?

Agree. We were all really excited about him & Grezda but they’ve been really disappointing to this point, albeit both haven’t had a real run of games due to injury.
TBF Barisic has been miles better than Grezda. Grezda i just don't see it. He's going to take a while to settle and adjust to Scottish football that's for sure.

I think he’s worth more than Dembele as he’s less injury prone and has more to his game, but I guess the tims were lucky there as Lyon just sold a guy for 20m so had the cash there.
Yeah but we see currently what we miss when Morelos doesn't play and i feel we will cash in on him in summer and i will miss him but i hope it's for big money £19m and up.

I was excited about him but havecto say I’m a bit concerned RFC. Here’s hoping a good pre season will help uhim prove us wrong.
What surprises me is they both played in Croatia & their teams are normally quite brave & aggressive but both don’t seem to have that to their games so far.

Yeah Grezda didn't have a preseason so will give him benefit of doubt.
It's the pressure of playing for Rangers for some it's too much.

I've seen lots of debate on here recently trying to conclude whether we are going to need another total rebuild in the summer; like many others, I believe we only need a few additions of serious quality.

I've listed some players that I've been an admirer of for some time who I think would turn us into serious title contenders, I've tried to include the obligatory YouTube video to accompany each suggestion but in some cases I couldn't find any.

These are players who in my view go straight into the first team and bolster our weaker areas but I've also included some players that would be players for the future. The defenders are the best example of this as I believe that Goldson and Katic are more than good enough as a pair but we are going to have to replace Worrall and McAuley.

I'd be very interested to read opinions on these guys, arguments in favour of the total rebuild or look at other suggestions.

Striker.

Michael Frey:

This guy should be our top target this summer regardless of Morelos leaving/staying, his workrate is unmatched from any other player I've seen in the game today. He joined Fenerbache in the summer and he hasn't quite found his form from Zurich. He doesn't have the most prolific record but he'd replace Morelos within our system perfectly and should Morelos stay, they'd compliment eachother immensely imo

Myron Boadu:

Being one of the most promising young players in the Eredivisie, he'd be out of our reach when it comes to signing permanently. He had bad luck with a summer injury and as a result hasn't played much this season, at 18 he needs to be playing so I believe a loan deal would be more than possible, maybe even for 2 seasons. He reminds me of a prime Defoe.

Midfield.

Lovro Majer:
(The #10 we've been crying out for)

This one would have to be another loan signing, he's viewed as one of the key players for the future in Croatia. He got his big move to Zagreb after rejecting numerous clubs across Europe and sadly got injured at the start of the season. We'd be a very attractive option for both him and Zagreb given we not only offer Europa League football but also have a few of his countrymen in our squad to help him settle easier. I believe he'd be one of the best players in the league once he hit the ground running, he has everything.

Junior Sambia: Obligatory video not found. (you can see multiple individual highlights if you search his name)

This is another player I believe should be a top target, he would cost £4-6m but we'd double our money within a year.
He can play anywhere across the midfield line to a higher standard than anyone currently in our squad and is also more than adequate cover at fullback. He's skilful, strong, pacey and direct, he has the energy and drive we've been missing in abundance.

Barrie McKay:

I considered leaving him out as this as it will possibly stop people taking this seriously. We all know him well and will have differing opinions but I don't think he should have been let go, given that we could probably secure his return for less than £1m I think it's a no brainer.

I believe he is the most technically gifted player we've seen at Ibrox since Barry Ferguson, people seem to forget how many chances he created for a toothless attack that just couldn't bury them.

Defenders.

Rick Van Drogelen:

This is probably the most unrealistic option I've listed, I doubt we could tempt him away from the Bundesliga(should HSV come up) unless we seriously broke the bank.

As a left footed central defender, he'd give us a very balanced back 3 should we keep exploring that shape. There's not much else to say other than he's already a very solid defender and 20 he's only going to get better.

Players for the Future/Backup Options. Lots of people will turn their noses up at these players but these are the type of signings that have Celtic so far ahead of us currently, It's time to stop giving them a monopoly on local talent and invest in our future.

Greg Taylor - I believe he could possibly challenge Barisic for the left back spot immediately, at his age I really believe we should be snapping him up now before he gets a move to England and becomes out of our reach.

Liam Lindsay - Another left sided centre back, he looked very solid at Partick Thistle before leaving for England. The level he plays at might deter people but he's still young enough to develop and given that he's shown he's a good player in the SPFL I think it's an inexpensive option that we'd be silly to ignore.

Lewis Ferguson - Aberdeen will inevitably be difficult to deal with here but he's another one that will inevitably get a move to England and we'd regret not moving for him, there's been endless arguments over him being good enough but he's a player that has already shown great drive, energy and eagerness in big games, he'd thrive playing at Ibrox. Him and Greg Docherty could be our future.

Lawrence Shankland - Another player that has caused heated debate, a late bloomer that has a terrifying goal scoring record this season. He'd be a very inexpensive investment and we'd be guaranteed to profit should it not work out.

The only clips I found on Sambia were two free kicks he took mate, so it was hard to see what he’s like.

To be fair we're not claiming to be professional scouts,or even someone with specialist knowledge.
I doubt any of us have coaching badges or would know how to vet a player's suitability to playing for such a great club as ours.Barasic and Grezda have talent, but that isn't always enough to be able to carry our shirt as many have realised but time will tell as always.

Just some folk on a football forum talking about footy and shooting the shit together, which forgive me if I'm mistaken- is kind of the point in the first place?

I know you''re admin so you've got to be looking in,but if you don't like the thread maybe just say nothing?

Just a thought.

We have 300 of these threads every year, nothing ever comes of them. If you want to talk about players we will never sign that is 100% your call.

How much do you think Frey would cost Necro ? He looks ideal for Scotland as you say. Won’t he be on a big wage in Istanbul ?
Frey would cost around £5m imo, money problems at Fenerbache might mean we could get him for a bit less, I think he'd really want the move and would try to force it.

He won't be on massive wages, he's not their main man

Taylor from Kilmarnock is defensively a really good full-back, but poor going forward. So that doesn't really help us much.

Turnbull looks a player though at Motherwell. He won't be there much longer.

I liked the boy Vertainen from Helsinki. Pretty much the ideal attacking midfielder for us.

I would have taken a punt on Ravel Morrison and still would, a short-term contract with relatively low wages.

Greg Stewart should have been signed in January.

He can change games like Saturday and is a much better option that Candieas against teams that sit deep against us.

He was a standout for a Killie and doing really well for Aberdeen.
Id take Stewart over Candeias yes.... no brainer

Kristoffer Peterson - Winger - Out of contract at Heracles.
Graeme Shinnie - Anywhere on left would be good back up - Out of contract at Aberdeen.
Steven Naishame - Makes such a difference to Hearts - Out of contract at Everton.
Elvir Koljic - ST - Craiova.
Greg Stewart - Out Of Contract - Birmingham.
Jake Hastie - Young Winger - Out of Contract - Motherwell.
Craig Halkett - CB - Out of contract - Livingston.
Vasilios Lampropoulos - CB - Out of contract - AEK
Marko Livaja - ST - AEK.
To name a few.
It takes the right recruitment not stupid money to find players.
Our scouting department needs to deliver in the summer bigtime.
Naismith
Stewart
Halkett
Shinnie
For the money all decent signings but apart from Naismith dont think the other 3 are starters.

We need a level up in quality to win the league. But i agree with this post its not about spending silly amount of money need to get the recruitment right and i question Mark Allen right now

We need guys to take us to the next level imo not guys like Greg Taylor at Kilmarnock.

He's average at best.

I'd also say regardless of how much £££ we rake in for Morelos we are going to find it extremely difficult to replace him.

At 21, he’s already a better option at left back than Halliday or Flanagan. Signings like this are made with idea of being long term replacements for the current starter in that position.

Let’s say Barisic picks up his summer form and stays with us until the end of next season, Taylor will have another full year of development under his belt and will slot in comfortably as a replacement.

I view guys like McCrorie, Docherty and Middleton in the same way, they’re our future and guys like Ferguson and Taylor should be too.

Morelos is our best player by far and will be incredibly difficult to replace if you want it to be a like for like change, I do believe that Michael Frey fits seamlessly into our current style of play though and we wouldn’t miss Morelos anywhere near as badly as when Defoe or Lafferty play

In hindsight Naismith would have been a better addition in January than Davis, given Davis's disappointing form so far

I'd love to be pad to do this sort of thing for a living! Alas I am out the loop and can only suggest we look to eastern Europe, US, and even Asian markets. But we need proper scouts and not just "they played against us"...perhaps buy in to existing scouting networks which I believe is possible these days. Quite often 'super clubs' will let less wealthy clubs have details of players they've ran the rule over.

Lower leagues down south have so far provided %^*& all apart from Tav.

Anyone coming in must IMMEDIATELY make the first XI better, I've said all along until you get to the stage of having a Arfield,Tav, Candeais, Jack coming off the bench to win/shore up games then we will never be strong enough. If we get to the stage where the core of our XI at present become excellent squad members, what a position we will be in!

I agree with the sentiment mate but it’s clear that we’re taking the approach of wanting 2 quality options for each position, I think its sensible as long as the recruitment is calculated.

Greg Taylor is a must. That boy is a player

Lewis Ferguson would do us a turn aswell but we have no chance doing business with them.

Barrie McKay suggestion you can go put in the bin

But we need alot more quality in every postion not too sure where the £ for that comes from
Left hand side of Taylor & Jones to compliment a right hand side of Flanagan & Stewart.

Beautiful.

Spot on. The short term signings need to be stopped. Need to look at the bigger picture.

Greg Taylor is 21 and U21 Scotland player he can do a job for us.

Look at the tims McGregor, Christie, Tierney ect all good ages and are only going to get better.

We need to start picking up the best scottish talent again, all the succesful Rangers teams have had them

The problem is we have no solid spine to add "2 or 3 superb first team starts" and so we need to keep the revolving door going....this summer alone we could lose Wes, Wallace, Flanagan, McAuley, Worrell, Halliday, Coulibally, Kent, Morelos, Defoe....

I'm going to go against the grain and say I think barrie mckay would be great for us as a no 10. He's got a great first touch and an eye for a defence splitting pass. And one of the best long range shots of any player we have had in years. Yes people say he was inconsistent but we were over reliant on him.

He’d be an option at number 10 for sure.

I really want to see him and Kent in the same side, McKay is the type of player that should be playing over Candeias against low blocks.

100% candeias is great against the better side that will put us under a bit of pressure but just isn't creative enough against the sides that sit in

I do like Frey mate. That video shows him up really well. Really strong & has an awareness that not many strikers have.
