Celtic magazine article ‘demolishes’ club’s abuse defence, claim lawyers

Celtic FC funded its scandal-hit feeder team and employed one of its key figures, prompting lawyers representing victims to claim it “demolishes” the club’s defence before a legal battle.

Celtic Boys Club has been engulfed by allegations of systematic sexual misconduct over three decades, prompting claims that it represents the largest child abuse scandal in British football.

Legal papers were lodged in June on behalf of a survivor who is seeking damages from the Parkhead club.

The test case is expected to be heard at the Court of Session within months.

Celtic FC is strongly contesting the claims, insisting the boys’ club was an entirely separate entity with which it had “historic connections”.

However, its stance appears to be contradicted by new evidence which confirms Celtic FC directly invested money into the feeder team and employed Frank Cairney, who headed the boys’ club, for two decades.

The ties between the clubs were confirmed in an article from Celtic View, Celtic FC’s official magazine, in April 1990. It confirms the boys’ club held its AGM at Parkhead and offers congratulations to Mr Cairney, the general manager, who was “in his 20th year on the Celtic staff”. Mr Cairney was quoted as saying that the work that was being done by him and his fellow officials was “appreciated by the people that matter at Celtic Park”.

The article also confirmed that Celtic FC had funded the feeder club, stating: “Honorary president Kevin Kelly said that Celtic FC chairman Jack McGinn and his board of directors were totally committed to the boy’s club and fully appreciated the tremendous service that Celtic received from them. He added that the board had already taken a decision to increase their support and investment in the boys’ club.”

An article in Celtic View two years earlier said the “Celtic directors, management and staff are fully committed to the Celtic Boys Club organisation”, adding “There is 100 per cent support from everybody at the club.” However, when questioned by The Times Mr McGinn insisted Celtic Boys Club was a “separate, autonomous body”.

In 1986 Celtic FC held an internal investigation into the abuse allegations which concluded they were false and “scurrilous”, clearing the coaching staff.

A spokesman for Thompsons Solicitors, which represents more than 20 individuals who claim they were molested at the boys’ club, said: “In Celtic’s own words, in their own official publication, a boys’ club official describes himself as a Celtic employee and the Celtic board of directors are happy to state they support and invest in the boys club.

“For anyone to contend that the two organisations were separate entities is clearly false and deeply insulting to all those who were abused as child footballers whilst under the care of Celtic.”

Mr Cairney replaced Jim Torbett, the founder of the boys’ club, who has twice been jailed for sex attacks. In January the Crown Office confirmed that Mr Cairney had been charged and was involved in a “live solemn case”. The Times understands that the charges relate to the alleged sexual abuse of young people and that Mr Cairney, of Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, will appear in court within months.

Rancid club. It’s not a thing anyone would want to deal with, but to try and deflect blame and disassociate from the boys club is despicable.

Hopefully the victims will see the beasts punished

Meanwhile... in Hollicom HQ...

This will all blow up shortly for the scum and rightly so a rancid outfit from top to bottom
Can't wait. I'm too old to be wishing my life away but in a few months time they will be in court defending and losing multiple cases, the 3 docs and hopefully Adrian's film will all be hitting the headlines at around the same time.

Hopefully the yanks are on the horizon as well.

Devils advocate here.

If the Boys club was part of CFC then why have a seperate AGM?

Was there a seperate AGM for the reserve team?
Celtic Pools? Celtic hospitality?
Think the fact there was a seperate AGM will actually be used as part of the scums seperate entity defence.

There will be separate AGM’s for all Limited Companies. Including Pools, Newspapers etc.
The issue is that Thomson’s are demonstrating And hope to establish at court - that this “corporate veil” of legal personality should be pierced.

If they had had a ounce of decency, they would have been given some forgiveness, but instead of doing the right thing, they did the same thing as the guilty party and continued to deny it.
The separate entity ruse must have looked very appealing to the shower of scum, and it can only be assumed that those who pedal the line must have known it to be a lie, and so those in the board room at the peadodome have tried to pervert the court of justice, which I believe is a criminal offence, and so all board members who sanctioned the press release should be charged.

You're quite right to bring that up, but here are counter arguments.

First, internal inquiry. The word "internal." How could an internal inquiry be conducted on a separate entity. The more pressing question, why? Under what jurisdiction would Celtic FC investigate Celtic Boys club, or have disciplinary powers over a separate entity. Indeed, why even report this in their separate entity magazine.

Secondly, it's a red herring. As was previously alluded to on here, Celtic derived a "clear and immediate" benefit from CBC. A reported change in the law means they are responsible.

Third, they have already settled a previous claim.

and lastly. Just do the right thing. Let a proper investigation of the Boys Club happen.

How is their 'Internal Investigation' getting on? Last year we were told they had been carrying one out for the past 2 years. That is some amount of digging from them.:(

We believe there was no such thing as an internal inquiry. No victims or families were approached in this 2 years.
After the so called “internal inquiry” was said to be complete, another alleged perpetrator came to light called Lyness Malley. Celtic made no mention of Lyness Malley in this 2 year Internal investigation. When we were searching for him he wasn’t to be found in any of Celtics history pages. Believe me we searched everywhere then eventually found him. This also raised the question of why was he erased from the history and nowhere to be found and who removed his name? We found him though.

Any idea what happened to the story that US detectives were investigating them? Was mentioned in the Times around this time last year.
We’ve been in contact with the American authorities on a few occasions. This was the last reply I received below. Others will verify in the big thread that this is the original reply to myself..

This information was recently brought to my attention. The Kearny Police Department Detective Bureau is reviewing this information and is in consultation with the Hudson County Prosecutors Office. I am not able to provide any further detail or information regarding the investigation at this point in time.

Thank You.

After reading that it makes me think, surely the claimants lawyers can simply contact the tax office and request to see whether the boys club coaches etc were paid by Celtic PLC, to put an end to this!!!!

Here’s my thought on the internal inquiry. When they brought that up I’m sure they said there was an internal inquiry going on. They never said by who. They never said it was by them , themselves.
Could it be that it was being conducted by an insurance company into celtic ?
Just a thought

At the time we contacted the London stock exchange (LSE) who would have to be notified if any internal investigation was taking place. They weren’t aware of anything.
