Halliday blasts Celtic fans and says Rangers legend McCoist or even Gerrard would never be abused

ANDY HALLIDAY blasted the Celtic fans who called for Neil Lennon's head outside Parkhead on Sunday night.
And the midfielder claims Rangers supporters would NEVER have abused a club legend - or even current boss Steven Gerrard.

Thousands of angry Hoops punters descended on the stadium following the shock Betfred Cup humbling at the hands of Ross County, with some troublemakers rioting with cops, leaving three officers injured.
Fans chanted 'Lennon get to f***' and players required a police escort to leave the ground safely, which led to Celtic condemning their own supporters' behaviour.
Peter Lawwell last night released a statement backing under-fire Lenny and urged the seething Parkhead faithful to do the same.
But Halliday reckons the way Lennon has been treated by protesting supporters is out of order and claims similar scenes would never have taken place on the other side of the city.

The former Ibrox midfielder told Open Goal: "Neil Lennon was basically born on the other side of the road from me.
"He was born into a green family.
"He's had an affiliation with the fans as a player, as a coach, basically his full life.
"He's as big a Celtic fan as you're going to get at the club just now including players.

"I've no doubt that he's hurting equally as much, probably MORE than some of the fans that were standing outside that stadium.
"I just don't think that's how you treat a Celtic legend, I really don't.
"See if it was the other side of the road and that was Barry Ferguson, John Greig or Ally McCoist as Rangers manager, that's not happening.
Hearts ace Andy Halliday

"See when Steven Gerrard got knocked out in the cup semi last year or lost at home to Hamilton, and the league was basically done and they were out the cups, that never happened.
"There weren't any fans, especially not with those scenes. Throwing things at motors and smashing down barricades... what are you getting from that?
"And the fact is, it's actually a lockdown.

"The way I see it is, this is the 21st century. See when people go on social media and see 20 people at Celtic Park, they'll say, 'Come on and we'll go down.'
"That's just what social media does now. It's that sort of mob mentality that when you see a big crowd gathering somewhere you'll say 'come on and we'll go.'
"Neil Lennon will be gutted, I don't think there's any doubt about it. Celtic fans have vented their frustration in the wrong way in my opinion."

Hearts star Halliday added: "I'm genuinely not trying to wind anyone up. There were Celtic fans telling me two weeks ago that they are not worried?
"But now two weeks later the players are spineless and cowards and get to' f*** out the club' and all that.
"It doesn't make any sense to me."

Lost at home to Hamilton and the league was basically done.
I think you're being dramatic with your wee angry faces mate. Do I think we'd have won the league last year had it run it's natural course? No. Should it have been handed out to them (or anyone else for that matter) after playing all 29-30 games? No. It has been shown that anything can happen in football & we started the season believing we were playing a 38 game season. It was not, & never will be, completed.

Weird. According to mentally challengeds there were ‘demonstrations’ after the 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle and the above Hamilton result.

I was at both games and saw nothing of the sort, they wouldn’t be lying would they?

Lying? As if...............

Ally McCoist has been on the end of some pretty heavy and frankly disgusting abuse from the bears but never to the extent that they've shown Lennon.

McCoist (and Jardine) were essentially the only ones looking out for the clubs back in the early beginnings of 2012/13. Just a couple of years later the vast majority of the away end at Tynecastle was chanting for him to GTF after we lost to Hearts.

I'd like to think we're above throwing missiles at players and causing riots at our own empty stadium, but we're not 100% squeaky clean.

And that's certainly not me defending that lot in anyway.

It’s true. There were Rangers fans at the doors of Ibrox when we went in to admin and whilst tempers were naturally high, civility remained.

Ally made me sad and angry when he was manager. I would never abuse him as he is a person at the end of the day.

His overall performances fell short of what I expected.

Ally the player is the best goalscorer of my time following us.

I have met him a few times since he departed and always made me smile. How could I ever abuse or be angry at our legend. Hes one of us and never forget that.

None of my friends would have subject Ally to any abuse, it's not right.

Hope lennon digs his heels in here.

Prominent red top running an article based on a podcast.
Now if only C1872 and H&H could come together to get a message across and into MSM.
Halliday is bang on the money but I do feel his media work will set him up for a fall though. Very young to be involved in that twisted world when he still has many good years as a pro ahead of him

And none of this happened when there is a pandemic happening and people are being fined for gathering 8 people for a house party.

But 1000s congregated at parkehead, shouting, spitting and becoming violent is something different altogether.

I was at the front door in 1983 after we lost to Motherwell. It was heated but never ever violent.

What about the "Ally Ally get to %^*&" chant during a game he was playing in?

Did that actually happen, or is that something that has grown arms and legs over the years mate?

There was plenty of criticism of Ally as a manager, however I don’t think it was ever personal and there was never any suggestion that his status as a Rangers legend would be under threat.

Hes right - no matter how bad things got / were i could never EVER see myself at the doors of Ibrox hurling barriers and being violent towards the players / manager / director - thats a whole new level of mentalness.

That is the difference making your feelings known through shouting get tae %^*& or launching missles at the players, manager, staff. Threatening them, probably throwing racist abuse in their to their black players.

Throwing barriers or sharks.

There is a difference.

When Ally was manager there was a bit of heat but we all understood the cluster f.uck conditions he was working under. The parasites running our club were a disgrace. Great to see Super Ally back to his chirpy cheery best these days. And he like us will be loving our Rangers under Gerrard.

No mate, it happened in the Scottish Cup against Dundee in Feb 1985. It was a significant number doing it too. I can also remember demonstrations outside the front door of Ibrox after a defeat at home to Hibs in 1977 (we went on to win The Treble!) and Motherwell in 1983. But there has NEVER been the violence that was on display outside the piggery the other night. Fans are entitled to show displeasure but there was no excuse for that, with police officers injured into the bargain. I can't see Rangers supporters ever reacting like that, and thank feck we wouldn't. They are utter scum.

I agree .

With our players/managers etc I've noticed that most if not all forums, blogs, groups etc etc are OK with being critical about their football, but going further is stepping over the line, if anyone does step over the line it doesn't take long for other fans to set them straight.

There was no chants but there certainly was online.

John Brown & Nacho Novo were closely affiliated with Sons of Struth throughout the whole sad affair as well.
