European Super League Officially Announced - All Comments In This Thread - Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, Spurs & Chelsea all out of it

Firstly UEFA have said they want to stop this. Secondly why are they banning the players then? To try and stop them playing in the rival competition so it doesn’t succeed. It is artificially trying to restrict the ability of the new competition to attract employees. It is illegal in the EU and probably the UK. UEFA have a monopoly and this would be abuse of a dominant market position.
They arent stopping them playing in the rival set up. They have no power to do that. However they have the power to not allow them to play in the Euros and WC qualofiers and FIFA has similar powers for WC finals.

The Perez rant in full

“The biggest clubs in England, Spain and Italy have to give a solution to the bad financial situation of the game... we reached the conclusion that doing a Superleague instead of Champions we could get back some of the money we lost because of the pandemic. We have to raise more money organising more competitive games”

“Football has changed... interest was being lost as audiences were going down, and the TV rights also being reduced. Something had to change. And the pandemic told us, ‘do it now’ We are all close to bankruptcy 40% of young people have got no interest in football”

“Football has to adapt to make this game more attractive to the world. In the 50s, it was a similar situation. UEFA and FIFA went against the new European Cup, but that competition changed football. We are doing this to save football”

“What is the world asking for? Singapur, China, and so many other places. What gives money are the big games. And that game goes everywhere. If the top gets money, it gets distributed by buying players or giving solidarity payments”

Utterly despicable, full of lies and sheer hubris. Scumbag.

Edit: theres more

“We have never thought of a fully closed league. It is not true. But what gives money is the big games. And we will be distributing that money (more than UEFA gets)”

“UEFA is a monopoly and should be more open... Football is in a very difficult situation and we could save it that way Legally we will go as far as needed Footballers can be calm because it will not happen (being kicked out of competitions)”

“All we have done is a public note to start talking (to UEFA) We don’t think the new CL format will work. Nobody does. And they want to start it in 2024! And clubs will be dead by then!”
Yup so Singapore and China

Why? 12 clubs are wanting to leave one organisation and move to another!

legally there is nothing that can be done which is why the government’s statement today was hot air
They can’t stop them currently perhaps but the government can literally legislate on anything they want in this country. They could change the law to make it illegal. And with brexit it can’t be challenged in Europe

new look champions league next season.

Aside from PSG, Bayern and Tims, you would think that’s the draw for the last 32 of Europa League.

I honestly want Barca and Real to die. Two clubs that are already Americanised franchises, think the football world should be on their knees at their feet, utterly consumed by their own self importance and are absolute tourist traps at the best of times. UEFA/FIFA, sky sports and the other clubs are one thing with the damage they've done to the game, but i truly believe these two are deeper in it than the rest by miles.

I honestly despise the pair of them.
Both clubs are owned by their supporters/socios who hadn’t been consulted over this. Surely they must be calling for a vote? IIRC the Barca president Laporta spoke against a ESL when he was in the running for the presidency and it was actually Bartomeu that agreed to it.

Mate Perez has said the games will be in Asia/Far East so not only are they fucking it from the champions league, these games are getting played millions of miles away from Manchester, London and Liverpool.

And you can be sure that anyone in government will be treated well to make sure there’s no issues

Its UEFA competition for members. If clubs break away they won't be members anymore.

FIFA or UEFA wouldn't be stopping the ESL from holding their own WC for instance.

It's same as most competitions world wide, I can't just rock up to my local golf club and demand to play in their competitions despite not being a member.
Yes but your golf club isn’t the only club around and isn’t a multi billion business. UEFA run European football so there is no alternative, hence the reason EU competition law becomes a factor that wouldn’t apply to your golf club.

Also, your golf club probably wouldn’t ban you if you were also a member somewhere else.

Hes always been like that. Hes absolutely in love with himself and thinks the world owes him and his club everything.

Reality is hes absolutely delusional. Hes utterly powerless to keep the thing alive if for example the UK Government decide to intervene.
True mate, I can’t believe the cnut is pleading poverty when he’s one of the primary reasons football is in the dire state.

The players won't be UEFA members anymore so can't play in UEFA competitions. Would be that simple. Instead they can play in the ESL international tournaments.

"interest was being lost as audiences were going down, and the TV rights also being reduced"

Is it totally lost on these cretins that interest was down precisely because of the anti-competitiveness brought on by their clubs?

I've had only a couple of hours to digest this and the proposal from the 12 does seem pretty despicable. However, UEFA's incompetence led us here. They could have allowed cross border leagues years ago. Instead, huge clubs like us, Ajax, Porto, Benfica, Bruges, a myriad of east European clubs have become a second string and UEFA's competitions have inevitably become uncompetitive. The format proposed by the ESL will never last but UEFA will have to reap what they sowed.

When push comes to shove and they realise the sheer tsunami of opposition from their players, their managers, fans, media, govt/politicians etc - what's going to happen is that the English club's owners are going to have to back down and leave the Spanish clubs in the shit.
Definitely, the English clubs will buckle, the whole thing will be dead and the rest of them will be pariahs and forced into a humiliating climbdown.

Hopefully.

Guy on sky news who is close to the government has all but said only the fans can really do anything about it and the ban on the World Cup or euros is the real fight against it.

The notion that the U.K. government can do anything is just laughable! We are still in a 2 week circuit break since October

I’d love to see that tbh . Imagine telling the scousers there team is playing in bejing and LA. As carragher and Neville said if klopp left and if they relocated those clubs the fans would rather burn everything including the owners to the ground

The notion that the UK Government doesnt have the power to regulate business is laughable actually. Especially when so many of their constituents who they rely on for votes are passionate about the issue.
