‘Chariots’ Offiah

Wasn’t really talked about post match but another example of a ref allowing a manager to sub a player off against us instead of applying the rules and showing a second yellow. Already on a booking and committed another shirt pull that should’ve seen him get his second yellow.

Naismith couldn’t get him off quick enough. Someone should’ve asked him if he felt like the ref done them a favour there since he wanted to talk about the officiating today…

Noticed the boy Offiah for Hearts today. Wondered whether he was related to Martin ‘Chariots’ Offiah of Rugby League fame back in the day. It’s his nephew. Anyway, cool story etc.

Great player, some speed, good nickname.

What a rugby player that boys was in his time, light years ahead and much like Lomu in RU for the all blacks, both unstoppable at their peaks.

Back in the days when League was professional and Union wasn’t and a lot of the best English players where in the 13 man game. Offiah and Ellery Hanley were immense.
Yes and Alan Tait who Offiah outpaced in that clip was eventually in a succesful British Lions team.

Not sure about the Hearts guy but I remember Martin Offiah explaining that his surname wasn't really pronounced to fit the 'Chariots' thing. It was pronounced "Off-ee-ah". But I suspect he went along with the 'Chariots' thing in the end.

That's a blast from the past, from the days that BBC used to broadcast a Rugby League match on a Saturday afternoon on Grandstand. Wigan, Widnes, St Helens were household names despite being little more than northern English shiteholes with a rugby team.

Out of curiosity, when Offiah passes the last Leeds player, Is that the same Alan Tait who who used to play Rugby Union or another player altogether?

Useless bit of trivia played a game against MO the week before he switched from union to league, couldn't get near him and could see he was going to be a star in either code .

Used to watch that, Eddie Waring was a great commentator. Loved how he pronounced the team names - “Leeeeeds”, “Wigaaaaan”, “Oooonslet”, “Oooool Kingston Rovers”, “ Leeeeeeigh” etc.

I used to love watching Offiah on Grandstand in the 90s. He was amazing.

Was on the radio last week or week before at lunchtime, think it was 5 live. Was talking about the abuse he took and how he used it to motivate himself and was no point getting upset about it. Been hated and hating the perpetrators was a bad thing in his eyes. He used it to his effect.

A very cool guy and a magnificent athlete.

Yes. Switched to Union and was one of the best centres Scotland has had. Last time we won the 5 nations (1999) and was a British Lion.

This.
Was pulling Sima back right in front of Beaton, was basically holding him for seconds, incredible how no foul was given.
Subbed a minute later.
He was 100% subbed off because he should have been sent off for a second yellow.
Sportscene laughably tried to say he was injured.
