25+ years of EPL winners and losers?

As someone who likes Everton it got me thinking.

Huge club, biggest on Merseyside until Bob Paisley. But especially since Sky and EPL they've struggled to gain much glamour. They've become stuck as a local club.

Another great example is Villa. Huge club since Victorian era. Until 90s they'd won trophies almost every decade since 1880s. Now unfashionable and not a global brand despite big crowds and really huge home city.

Winners? Chelsea without doubt. When glamour era started they were in deep trouble. Arsenal? Always a big club but became stylish and gained big global audience.

Neutral : Liverpool and Man U still biggest clubs as they always were.

Thoughts?

A bit disrespectful to Bill Shankly.
I think Shankly's Liverpool from 64-74 were much bigger than Everton.
3 League Titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 UEFA Cup
compared to Everton's
2 League Titles and 1 FA Cup.
A bit like comparing the Beatles to Cilla Black ;)

I’d say Nottingham Forest have had a pretty spectacular fall from grace.

Albeit they only had a short period of great success, less than 20 years after winning the European cup they were losing 8 goals at home to Man Utd. They haven’t ever really looked like coming back up.

Newcastle looked to be on the cusp of becoming an established EPL powerhouse until the Fat Man got his greasy fingers into them.

A one club city with a huge and loyal fan base. They should be doing much better than they are.

Sunderland. Never out of the top flight until late 1950’s ( 1957?). Struggled to get back and remain there, just as European competition was taking off.

Everton had more fans and were 'bigger' until the EC wins.
Both clubs have an identical title winning record up until 1970, so to say either was the bigger club, either by success or fanbase isn't truly correct. In their title winning 1965/66 season Liverpool were attracting gates of between 48,00- 53000, Everton in their title season 1962/63 were attracting similar crowds except for a visit of Man Utd where they would bring in almost 70000.

It was probably after the FA Cup 1965 win for Liverpool that they challenged to be really looked on as, if not bigger, then certainly the equal of Everton in size of clubs. Although as time tells us all, Liverpool have become Global, Everton remain a club of under achievement.

Coventry City were regulars in top league for years. Bolton too.

Wimbledon.

Consistently punched above their weight for the first decade of the EPL whilst buying low and punting high.

Imagine Wimbledon in today's EPL with their 4,000 crowds.

The South has more representation now at the expense of the Midlands. Leicester and Villa are the only Midlands teams at the moment. Derby, Forest and Coventry were regulars with WBA and Birmingham having spells in the EPL too.

Sorry Earl, but you are talking absolute shite!

Average Attendances during the Shankly years that I mentioned

64-65.....Everton 42,0622
..............Liverpool 41,138
65-66...Liverpool 46,344
..................Everton 38,498
66-67...Liverpool 46,388
..................Everton 42,606
67-68......Everton 46,983
...............Liverpool 46,755
68-69...Liverpool 47,340
..................Everton 45,958
69-70......Everton 49,531
...............Liverpool 43,567
70-71....Liverpool 45,602
..................Everton 41,090
71-72...Liverpool 47,687
.................Everton 37,482
72-73..Liverpool 48,127
.................Everton 34,471
73-74..Liverpool 42,332
.................Everton 35,351

and since you are now claiming wee Everton had more fans up to the EC wins, take a look

74-75...Liverpool 45,966
..................Everton 40,021
75-76...Liverpool 41,623
.................Everton 27,115
76-77..Liverpool 47,221
.................Everton 30,046

Liverpool never averaged below 41,000 in any of those seasons.
Everton fell into the 30,000's at least 5 times, and in the 20,000's once.

Look at their performances in Europe during that period.
Liverpools first attempt at the European Cup (64-65) saw them go all the way to Semi Finals.
Their second venture in Europe (65-66) saw them go all the way to the ECWC Final.
70-71 saw them to the Semi Final of the EFC
72-73 Liverpool win the UEFA Cup

Everton 62-63 EFC out in Round 1 to Dunfermline Ath.
63-64 EC, out in the Preliminary Round.
The furthest Everton ever got was the 70-71 EC when they went out in the 3rd round to Panathinaikos!

Winners....Man City

2 League Titles, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups in their first 100+ years

4 League Titles, 2 FA Cups, 5 League Cups in the last 10 years

Aside from a few examples of destructive ownership, failure in England is largely down to spending too much money on crap managers and crap players.

The Sky money is brilliant but if you tie it all up in 4/5 year contracts handed out to rubbish players it cripples your ability to do anything.

Can I be the first to say I'd gladly have Rangers take all that brilliant Sky money :))

Good points well made though, paying inflated fees and salaries to crap for long periods with massive pay-offs does cripple clubs
