Wonder if there are any older bears who remember this period in our history ?
Brilliant piece mateI'm an ancient bear. Rangers were a big club, well known and respected throughout the world. Then European tournaments started and we realised we were miles behind. 3 finals in 11 years, but I also remember losing 12 4 to Frankfurt, 8 4 to Spurs and losing to bang average sides.
The last 6 years have been the most consistent period in our European history, albeit at a lower level. The expansion of the UCL has thrown money towards the richest nations, putting us further behind.
I’d probably take that to be fair hahaAye mate a think we should go all out and win the Champions League next season whilst coming 11th in the spfl
My uncles were of the same opinion, that losing Baxter robbed us of a European trophy60 years ago and I still can’t get over the Inter Milan European Cup game!
We’d lost Jim Baxter with a leg break in Vienna in the previous round, lost 3-1 to Inter in the first game in the San Siro, scored in 6 minutes at Ibrox in the return leg, battered them, hit the bar and eventually went out. Inter won the European Cup. Nobody will EVER convince me that we wouldn’t have won it if Baxter had been there.
The advent of European football seems to be treated as a bit of a ‘year zero’, similar to 1992 in England.
If your club’s golden age was before the mid-fifties then your reputation doesn’t count as much. Look at Bayern, they only really became properly successful in Germany in the late sixties. Before that, Nürnberg were the establishment club.
Timing is so important. We had our window of opportunity from 1986-1997-ish and completely blew it.
Failing to reach the CL next season will be another fatal blow. You simply cannot miss revolutionary moments.
I have seen 3 European finals but not in 11 years. The first one I seen was 72Wonder if there are any older bears who remember this period in our history ?
I just remember bits of the 67 game on TV,I was 11 and still remember the Roger Hynd chance.I was fortunate to be in Barca for the 72 final.Wonder if there are any older bears who remember this period in our history ?
They count the Super Cup, like English clubs counting the Charity Shield as part of a treble year.Should we of maybe modernised a bit and focused more on European success, rather than domestic?
1 less European trophy than Aberdeen is a disgrace.
Roger Hynd had a goal dissallowed and missed a sitter late in regulationIronically, it was us that started Bayern's trophy run in Europe from 1967 onwards. I'm sure we had chances to win that game as well in Nuremberg. ?
I'll leave it to you to find out all about our encounter with Real Madrid in 1963.Brilliant piece mate
Must have been exciting to have witnessed those finals
I didn’t know of the spurs result though, heard of the Frankfurt games sadly
Aye and the same in 1972 muttley! When we grubbed them in the semi final at Ibrox we had the sight of the peerless Franz Beckenbauer - and he was genuinely peerless - blootering the ball out for a throw-in (or “shy” for us oldies!) because we pressurised them so much.Ironically, it was us that started Bayern's trophy run in Europe from 1967 onwards. I'm sure we had chances to win that game as well in Nuremberg. ?
I agree - the European tournaments - like the World Cup for the national teams in the UK - was a whole new ball game.I'm an ancient bear. AgreeThe Super Cup is a glamour friendly.

Just too young to remember Frankfurt but that was the team that were scudded by Real at Hampden in the final suggesting we were miles behindI'm an ancient bear. It really doesn’t count for anything, no matter what the sheepshaggers might want to believe.Agree
But it still counts in the trophy cabinet
I excluded that because we put out a team of boys in Madrid. The match at Ibrox (I was there 10/- for my ticket) was a much tighter affair.I'll leave it to you to find out all about our encounter with Real Madrid in 1963.
Only one victory in 5 finals is a bit of a poor record sadlyIt's all ifs and buts but imagine if we had won every European final we had appeared in. Glorious.
I'm sure if we had won it you would include itIt really doesn’t count for anything, no matter what the sheepshaggers might want to believe.
100% agree with everything you say. I would also add our very low domestic TV deal has further opened up the gap between us and the richest nations helping to put us even further behind.I'm an ancient bear. Yeah Eton and Windsor are the real big boys in EnglandThe advent of European football seems to be treated as a bit of a ‘year zero’, similar to 1992 in England.

If Jim Forrest had been playing it would have been a different outcomeI just remember bits of the 67 game on TV,I was 11 and still remember the Roger Hynd chance.I was fortunate to be in Barca for the 72 final.
I'd say we have tbh.Should we of maybe modernised a bit and focused more on European success, rather than domestic?
I'd say we have tbh.
Europe's been great since we came back up the leagues.
I think so too, sacking him was the equivalent of corporate vandalism and cost us the league for seasons to come.If Jim Forrest had been playing it would have been a different outcome
I was meaning at the time we got to 3 finals. We should of won more than we did.I'd say we have tbh.

100% Bbj, still remember the Roger Hynd chance. We lost the '67 final in Nuremburg due to the bloodymindedness of then Chairman John Lawrence forcing Scot Symon to basically chase Jim Forrest and George McLean out of the club following the debacle in Berwick. Big Roger Hynd was a centre back played at centre forward. Jim Forrest would have scored.

Sadly your right. If european football existed in the struth era we probably win 1 maybe 2 at least. Unfortunately that lot got their timing right with their best tesm being the 60s team under steinThe advent of European football seems to be treated as a bit of a ‘year zero’, similar to 1992 in England.

The European Super cup is not a major European trophy.Should we of maybe modernised a bit and focused more on European success, rather than domestic?
1 less European trophy than Aberdeen is a disgrace.
I didn’t think I’d see another one after Manchester but I do think now if we are likely to be in another final it will be the Conference.Hopefully see another one soon enough !
Thanks for that, you made me feel old.I'm an ancient bear. Rangers were a big club, well known and respected throughout the world. Same year , different season amazing the contrast of the 2 results in just a few months.Just a wee boy then but I remember Rangers playing Fiorentina in the Final, although I probably didn't know it was a final at the time.
I remember the other two finals well.
I don't remember losing 12-4 to Eintracht Frankfurt. I do remember us beating Borussia Monchenglaadbach 11-0 on aggregate. That was the same year as the Eintracht game. Even then I must have had a selective memory for Rangers wins, and blackouts for defeats !
For the younger ones, 10/- (10 shillings) is 50p in real money.I excluded that because we put out a team of boys in Madrid. The match at Ibrox (I was there 10/- for my ticket) was a much tighter affair.
